I’d listen on Jansen. But too many factors go into any decision to actually deal him…

... moving to the top of that list -- for me, anyway -- is Kenley calling the dugout from the bullpen Saturday night and telling Cora to give him the ball.

His scoreless 8th and 9th innings in the last game of the White Sox series were pretty useful too.

Will Grissom even be able to get playing time when he's ready to play again?

The way things are going they may have to send him to Worcester.

Sending Grissom to WooSox is logical until he shows he can hit again. Valdez and Hamilton have earned their current spot on the field. Westbrook should enjoy his nights under the lights because he won't last ( or there is no room for a journeyman.) Valdez, himself, will reach a bad streak at bat or in the field and be swapped with Grissom eventually. Hamilton looks like the real deal, but may have to settle for the utility infielder role, but right now, that is Grissom's future role.

He's a cool dude IMO.

That was super cool.

That has to rub off on the younger players, too.

Yanks #1 in power rankings- overtaking PHI.

BAL is #3.

The listed the Sox at #12 (up from 13.)

They have been anywhere between one game under .500 to two games over .500 every single day since … May 18!

It's good to see Rafaela put together 4 weeks of decent hitting, and he also led the Sox in RBIs over the past 4 weeks, too (again.)

28 Days OPS / RBIs

1.185 Vadlez 13

.901 Devers 15

.877 Duran 12

.846 Abreu 6 (45 PAs)

.811 Refsnyder 6

.805 DHam 7 (14 SB/1CS in 21 GS'd)

.783 Rafaela 16

.760 Wong 9

.749 Westbrook 4

.746 Smith 10

(All others under .570)

Have to agree. Right now he looks very useful if the Sox are still in the hunt a month from now or, better still, in September. That said, it also depends on what another team might offer.

lets trade him back to the Braves for Sale.

I think we stick with DHam, EValdez and Romy G/Grissom/Westbrook at middle IF for the rest of 2024.

I doubt we trade for SS or 2B. I'm not sure we consider a rental type trade, but if we could find a big RHB that plays 2B, maybe... (Doubtful)

I still think we make no deals that are just about 2024, unless we trade someone we are sure would not be in our future plans, anyway, and that begs the question about why would another GM want that type of player, unless it is a guy like Wink, who is apparently in the doghouse.

I think we trade Jansen, no matter what. We may feel like Hendriks and ICampbell can fill a pen slot, and mayb e we try Slaten as the closer.

We might trade Martin, if he is back and in form.

O'Neill is another strong trade candidate, if we are sellers.

Pivetta is the hardest one to trade, without it looking like a total punt on 2024.

I guess we'll know more in 5-6 weeks.

need to get rid of Yoshida somehow and replace him with a "big RHB". he's utterly useless.

Kenley Jansen is one of the all time great closers. If you think you have a chance at contending, you should think twice before trading him.

I literally came in here to say exactly this.

I get trading Jansen if you're sellers, but you keep him if you want to make a serious playoff run.

this is exactly the position the FO was in the past few years and they went for it. expect the same again this year

The 2021 Sox finished the season without a closer--and no closer when the beat the Yankees in the wild card and the 100 win Tampa Bay Rays, 3 games to 1 in the ALDS. Then they lost to Houston in the ALCS, but not because of no closer.

I think what Jansen did--call from the bullpen and then go in and get 4 very nice outs--was fantastic. But if someone else makes a really good offer to get him, the Sox should at least consider it.

It’s not just about the closers role, as much as it’s about the bullpen overall. There’s a lot of young talent there, and Jansen is a HOF talent leadership there. Things could get very thin really quick if someone goes down or underperforms in the playoffs.

Jansen is the kind of guy trade for if you have playoff ambitions.

I got no problem if the Sox decide to be sellers if they make an honest effort to retool this offseason. But if they should or do go for it, you keep Kenley

What if a contender offers a prospect hitting around .330 in Triple A?

... and that guy turns out to be another Vaughn Grissom, who hit exactly .330 in 465 AAA Plate Appearances just last year!

Maybe this is why Bloom was so inactive -- nobody offered him actual big league talent in exchange for actual big league talent.

I agree. Pay 80-90% of his deal, if that's the only way to dump him.

Ask for nothing back.

Lots can happen between now and the trade deadline. The current winning trend only confuses what to do for Breslow. Should become clearer after the A-S game as to whether the Sox pitching and hitting can stay sharp, and significant injured guys ( Abreu/Casas) make a strong comeback.

If the Sox keep winning at around a .550-.600 clip, then they at least have developed some talent , now at the MLB level, who could bring some interest, while improving the bench strength. Plenty of time over the next 6 weeks to sort this out.

In terms of need, barring other injuries would be another RH bat to effectively take Yoshida's role, but how do you make that dump ? A starter and a LH reliever would not hurt going into Aug/Sept.

So, we bench Refsnyder or O'Neill?

Posted

O'Neill is now 2nd in OPS on the Sox.

We have 7 players over .800 and 9 over .700.

.929 Devers

.888 O'Neill

.879 Refsnyder

.857 Casas

.850 Wong

.829 Abreu

.809 Duran

.776 Duran

(.748 Westbrook w just 18 ABs)

.717 Romy G

On a serious rise...

.670 Rafaela (.822 in June)

.668 Valdez (1.199 in June)

.636 Smith (.801 in June)

Banner 18 for the men in green! Is there a baseball team from Boston playing this year. There can’t be, because All I heard last offseason was sham, sham, sham. It couldn’t be that another prediction/opinion/suggestion was wrong again. Why is the carpet all wet Todd? I don’t know Margo.

Cue the Duck Boats for Friday for the BIG Green Men! NO SHAM.

The Celtics were undefeated in the playoffs when I wore my Brown Jersey, I lost it for game 4 and ya'll saw what happened. Found it and had it back on last night.

So...

You're welcome.

Wait.

Are people advocating acquiring a RH bat while advocating benching RHH Tyler O’Neill?

Vegas was talking about a RH DH to replace Yoshida.

On paper we're still light on RH offense.

But if O'Neill is healthy and Wong, Rafaela and Refsnyder keep hitting like they are, we don't look so bad.

If only they can sustain success so the Sox sustain contention to sustain fan interest and remove the stain of Henry's disdain.

And the strain of Henry's restraint.

I think it's fair to say they can not.

Wong and Refsnyder are literally #1 and #2 on the team in BABIP, probably no one is due for a regression more than them.

Refnysder has always hit lefties well, but Wong's batted ball data is horrible, he's probably due for a regerssion more than anyone on this team.

Wonder if Teel is in the cards after the trade deadline? not to replace Wong but to platoon him with Wong for a playoff push.
