FWIW the Seattle Mariners have posted seven straight quality starts but remain under .500 at 9-10, trailing the Red Sox.

It's early.

Of course it's early, but 20 games is still 20 real games, well worth discussing and disagreeing about.

Especially, the Sox pitching, which has been stunningly good while everything else--hitting, defense, baserunning, etc--has been pretty awful.

i realize we are nowhere near the trade deadline so perhaps nothing can be done to enrich this roster, especially while the IL list is filling faster than the Titanic boilerroom.

But do inform me, what if anything is different from Bloom's tenure last few years to the current version ? Major injuries on the mound and field ( Gio/Story) ; Yoshida with the sophomore blues, Pivetta/O'Neill on short IL's and routinely filling the error prone/no hit infield with the 3 amigos. Not being negative, but how far into Devers macro contract will his shoulder issue , forget the knee, become chronic due to his swing ? NFL---Not For Long. Breslow/Cora are wrong to not give Raffy a 10 day rest too..

At least Breslow doesn't feel the need to tell us how great it will be, wait until next year. He's very quiet, probably having watched Lerner open his big mouth, not wallet.

We are 10-10.

This is a .500 team at best.

Pretty much what most of us expected, except the way we got here has been a bit surprising.

Top Rotation in MLB

Middle of the road pen

Bottom of the middle on O.

One of the worst 5 on D.

A ctually I think they are playing better than expected. Other than the shoddy defense what has really hurt this team are the injuries. I know it is against the major league culture but guys have to play smarter and be more aware of their surroundings and try an avoid going full and risking some injuries.

Defense has cost this team multiple games. And apparently just saying “we need to play better defense” is not the cure…

Jacques back to Worcester. 32yo Cam Booser recalled.l

Booser has no MLB experience but did give Worcester 6 good innings this year…

Usually pitching can carry a team, but the D just about cancels it out.

The O is slightly below average.

10-10 seems about right. Maybe 11-9.

Does the Red Sox Express from Worcester to Boston and RT, drop off and wait outside player parking, or are there 2 busses, one coming and one going? Cam Booser ?? That sounds like fun on a game thread.

Who goes to make room on the 40 for Booser?

With Booser coming up, it's time for 40 man roster roulette. You'll find no Booser on it. Will we get a DFA here , or another 60 day IL'er ? Let's hope that is not the case, the IL not the DFA .

Breslow & Co. , officially open for business.

Maybe Story to 60 Day IL>

I will put the DFA on Dalbec , although I thought he would be out when Grissom "the missin" showed up. Dalbec is sort of the up/down Devers back up, but Reyes can butcher it as well as anyone. Among the pitchers you could DFA, and not lose sleep on being picked up, is Mr. Jacques himself.

I'd DFA Jacques and acquire Kevin Smith (released by NYY.)

Place Story on the 60 Day IL to add Booser.

DFA Dalbec and add Fitts or Guerrero.

Booser is interesting if nothing else. 31 year old pitching in AAA, never been in the Show, but did serve 50 days of baseball rest for puffing on the magic dragon and getting tested in 2017. I just have a good feeling that this stoner will lift the clubhouse spirits on this .500 team.

Good point , Moon, on Story's status as a 10 day IL. With some obvious holes in the boat, wouldn't Breslow have already made room. Not like you will see Story back anytime within 160 days.

They wait until a decision HAS to be made, because anything can happen between choices.

They never had someone not on the 40 that they preferred, until now.

Also, with ready to DFA guys like Dalbec and Jacques, it's easy to add another 1-2 guys, at min,

Dalbec is 0 for 19 with 12 strikeouts. His fielding is not that good. Why take up a spot on the 40 man? It's so obvious I'm surprised that even the Red Sox management hasn't seen it. DFA him now. We have better fielders who actually might get a hit once in a while. I admit to continuing to be negative about this year. We waste our good performers with terrible fielding and weak hitting.

You have no argument from me on Dalbec (or Jacques.)

I guess they viewed him as a better option than Kavadas or Meidroth, and to be honest, neither of them are clear choices.

The Jacques choice is worse, to me.

We have too many 'if's' in the infield. Physical mistakes on top of mental lapses have killed us.

Posted
Since I have heard that major leaguers already know the fundamentals of fielding and base running by the time they get to the Big Leagues, this is not the fault of the manager or coaches. The only solution is to clear the roster and start over.

Young players (abreau, rafeala, and cassas) have growing pains.

Bad fielders (Hamilton, Reyes, Valdez and devers) destroy pitching staffs

Wonder how the 3 amigos made the Big Leagues.

Bring a bad fielder isn’t necessarily a matter of poor understanding of the fundamentals; in many cases, it’s a simple lack of coordination…

Multiple injuries?

Most teams can survive having a utility infielder in the lineup every now and then. Not many teams go far when they have to use three of them for multiple consecutive days…

Looks like Cam Booser is going to get a look. He’s looked great in AAA

Has not been officially added to 40 man yet. Need to make another roster move since they acquired Vladimir Gutierrez (RHRP).

We all have seen how many runs the Sox have allowed, due to poor defense that has not been called an error, such as failures to turn easy DPs, off line throws, throwing to the wrong guy, failure to make tricky plays and other botches, but look at just the Runs Allowed vs UnEarned Runs Allowed numbers for the top 10 teams in least Earned Runs allowed:

KCR 52 ER/ 52 Runs (No, this is not a typo!) NO unearned runs allowed!

BOS 56/81 (No, not a typo!) 25 Unearned runs allowed in 20 games!

NYM 57/73 (Pretty bad at 16 Unearned but not close to 25)

NYY 59/70 (11 UnER)

CLE 60/65 (Just 5)

DET 63/75 (12)

MIL 67/77 (10)

PHI 64/78 (14)

MIN 70/78 (8)

The CWS have 14 Unearned runs allowed. Nobody else comes close!

xFIP vs ERA

3.29/3.61 (0.32) PHI (.294 BAbip)

3.48/2.75 (0.73) BOS (.279 BAbip)

3.50/3.68 (0.18) BAL (.290 BAbip)

3.57/3.93 (0.36) SEA (.305 BAbip)

B-R has us at 55 ER and 26 UER.

That's 1.3 UER per game, which extrapolates to 211 for the season.

We really need to hear from Tom Werner on this.
