Yes, "more ground to make up". We finished 23 games behind Baltimore, 21 behind the Rays, and 11 behind the Jays. The team we finished closest to is the one that looks to be getting better.

We should have no problem duplicating those results.

At least there are less divisional games now!

i tired of it a long time ago. at this point i am almost ready to move on from the Red Sox after being a die-hard fan for about 40 years.

i feel your pain. i've lived and died with this team for 50 years. i hate losing and when my team is losing, year after year after year, then i find another team to follow. for me it's been the Cardinals and Rangers. i really like the commitment to winning the Rangers have made of late.

My arguments are all based on how bad our rotation still looks. We all agreed that the rotation was our weakness and needed desperately to be upgraded. If they do nothing else they will have effectively downgraded it by swapping Sale for Giolito. To me that's f'king bizarre.

I'm not looking at this trade in isolation. In isolation it looks like it could be a good move. But in the context of our s***** rotation, I'm not so sure.

Lots of time left to get that starter we need. Zero faith on my part because I honestly don't know what these guys are thinking any more.

i do. they're thinking about the bottom line.

I think it's almost certain the rotation is going to be in a much better shape in a month (hopefully within a week). There's just too much talk (from Breslow and the journos) that the Sox are in on virtually all the pitchers available for trade and some of the free agents ones.

I'm expecting us to get one for sure, possibly two. My feeling is, Houck, Whitlock and Pivetta are all going to the pen. Hence the comfort with trading Jansen. And the rotation will be something along the lines of -

#1 (trade)

#2 Bello

#3 Gio

#4 Imanaga (or another)

#5 Crawford

That would be pretty decent with an excellent pen. At a push, I think we'll add a power bat in the outfield, too.

If (and big IF I grant you,) all that comes off, how would you feel?

They initially made money by spending money. Now they are going to make money by saving money. Fun!

I don't see them bringing in 2 more pitchers. One? Sure.

I have no doubt that Brez is exploring all the options. What I'm afraid of is that they're going to decide that the prices are too high in money and/or prospects.

We only need to catch Toronto and New York.

We did win 78 games last year. 10 more than WSC Texas won in 2022.

My issue isn’t the team’s inability to get a frontline pitcher. Or an ace. Or whatever. The improvements need not be so specific. But wondering does need to happen…

Crag is not attached to these prospects and has made a few trades already. I'd be more concerned about the $$$ constraints.

He hasn't traded any prospects of note yet, though.

I totally agree.

Part of me thinks, well, we can still trade for a 1/2 and sign Stroman or Imanaga, and come close to what I hoped for in NOV & DEC, but then the reasoning part of my brain smacks me upside the noggin' and says, "WTF, dude! You're dreamin'!"

Sox ownership might not be alone in our division

Who is running away with the AL East?

Baltimore - added Kimbrel. Lost a couple of mediocre starting pitchers

Tampa - Added Pepiot but lost Glasgow

New York - Added Soto but no pitching

Toronto - Added Kiner-Falefa but lost Chapman/Belt

Boston - Added Giolito and Grissom but lost Sale

Obviously we had more ground to make up, but the rest of the division is not exactly running ahead and leaving the Sox behind.

Balt's young core is moving closer to prime.

NYY is getting Rodon back, or so they think. (Maybe they do, but then Judge will get hurt.)

TBR never goes away.

TOR may not be done with major moves.

Good point though. Nobody looks to have gotten better on paper.

Well.... not any top ones:

Victor Santos and Nick Robertson for O'Neill

Ammons for Slaten, who is also a prospect.

MiLFA: Benitez & Olivares

On the flip side: trades for prospects:

Verdugo> Fitts Weissert (not a prospect?) & Judice

Urias> I Campbell (not a prospect?)

We've become conditioned to expect to be disappointed. I'm hopeful something happens but I'll be far from shocked if it doesn't.

I'm still waiting for the Sox to sign Springer to replace Betts, for less than half the money they saved by not extending Mookie...

Braves GM Alex Anthopoulos said Red Sox were "adamant" they got Grissom in exchange for Sale. Anthopoulos thought so highly of Grissom as a person that he called him directly (instead of, what -- letting the guy find out on social media?)... Anthopoulos predicts Grissom will be a MLB All-Star and has a "big league bat right now" -- he said last winter...

Right now, a week away from Memorial Day, Grissom is a young guy pressing to make up for lost time, trying to show the world he belongs in the starting lineup of a major league ballclub. It's still early in his career and in his life -- unlike for old Red Sox fans looking for any positives rooting for their banged up, undermanned, starless team.

Young talent seldom instantly matures into stardom, and no one expects Breslow to be suddenly given a blank checkbook in order to sign proven quality bats for the roster. But what we all should hope for, is that he's furiously searching for the Andrew Bailey version of a batting instructor -- a top-of-the-industry coach who can tap into big league potential, and help batters find their grooves and the confidence to do damage to pitches in the strike zone... before they ever have to swing at stuff they can't reach.

How can anyone believe anything on social media? How do I even know you're you?

If artificial means not real, then artificial intelligence is a dumbass.

“Artificial” means “man-made”. After all, the root word is “art”.

Dictionary.com is artificial. Just like Q-Anon.

(Apolitical dude note: Netflix has a documentary out called “The Anti-Social Network” that tells the story of 4chan.com, up through its evolution to 8chan.com and the creation of Q-Anon. If you’re hating the Sox and need a break, I recommend it as it’s quite good.)

The Sox are 12th in runs scored, 2nd in ER allowed and 2nd in ERA.

The truth is, up until now, we haven't needed Sale, we've needed hitting. The Sale trade hasn't hurt us.

Let's dig deeper. Chris Sale is good, very good when he's healthy, aside from a couple duds he was lights out for us last year......for 20 games. The most he has pitched since 2019, he's up to 9 this year.

Chris Sale was gone after this year, and the Sox cashed him in for 6 years of a Vaugh Grissom, 22 at the time, who hit at every level with a lifetime .863 OPS in the minors reaching the bigs at 21.

Now, you can't argue with the results, Grissom sucks. Did he just completely turn into a bust the day he was traded to the Sox? or could it be that he's young, pressing, and after being injured and having no spring training his timing is completely off? Given the small sample size I'm perfectly happy throwing my hat in the ring on that later statement.

It's very fair to say that as of right now the trade doesn't look great, but there's every reason to still like it long term, and there's plenty of time for Grissom to return more value than Sale will in 2024. He was 5 years of team control left after this year.

With that said, it's time to send him down to the minors. He obviously needs more time to get his timing back, work on some adjustments, and do it in an enviroment where he's not hurting the big league club.

Terrible, terrible argument, Hugh. I can't believe you made it.

We'd be a couple games better right now with Sale. We'd have 3 studs instead of 2.

We've had 6 bullpen games and lost 4 of them.

The fact our overall pitching has been excellent doesn't mean having a better pitcher wouldn't improve our record. It's just simple logic and math.
