BREAKING: The Atlanta Braves are acquiring seven-time All-Star Chris Sale in a trade with the Boston Red Sox, sources tell ESPN. Well-regarded infield prospect Vaughn Grissom is the return to Boston, which will send money with Sale, who waived his no-trade clause to join Atlanta

Ha ha! Stars for prospects! The Red Sox way. Nice gesture, though, to pick up part of his salary. Now who will be the first apologist to argue this shows the RS commitment to home-grown talent.

Shocking.

Now, I wonder why we aren’t spending on top pitching even more than I have, this whole winter.

Well there is the 2B answer possibly. Now does this mean that Breslow is looking at moving a middle infielder or two in trade? Fair question.

I won't say that - but Sale has also has 2.6 WAR over the last 4 seasons combined.

The trade to get Sale was excellent, the extension not so much....now I can finally move on from my love affair with Sale.

But can we love Vaughn Freakin’ Grissom!?

You have to think this is followed up by an additional move to upgrade the starting rotation. They’re also taking a chance on 6 years on a 23 year old who could be their 2nd baseman of the future.

Some other move is definitely in the works ……

obviously the team will miss Sale - he was still good when he was healthy. But he also once suffered a broken wrist while trying to type a Players Tribune article as to why the government wants us to be injected with Satan's DNA - so durability wasn't his strong suit.

I’m definitely not sad to see Sale get traded, but I don’t like paying $17M to do it.

But maybe we now have our 2B of the future.

(Does this goes to show you that Sox not impressed with Yorke.....a surprise 1st round pick?)

Time to move on from injury prone guys....especially past their prime.

I don’t what it shows, because I still can’t get over paying the Braves $17M

Maybe - but I think they wanted the freedom to trade from the middle infield group. This gives them some flexibility.

Cot's has Sox at $38M under the cap after posting Giolito's contract.

Assuming savings of $10M in Sale's trade, we still have $48M to go after top of the line pitching.

He was in MLB two years ago…

He’s had 216 AB in 2 years, but only 75 last year. Hopefully he’s better at 2B than he was at SS where they said he struggled.

So this is our potential, positional lineup

Age as of 7/1/2024

28 CC Wong (5 yrs of team control)

26 1B Casas (5 yrs)

23 2B Grissom (6 yrs)

27 3B Devers (10 yrs) 27

31 SS Story (4 yrs plus 1)

27 LF Duran (5 yrs)

23 CF Rafaela (6 yrs)

25 RF Abreu (6 yrs)

30 DH Yoshida (4 yrs) 30

29 O'Neill (1 yr)

Go spend $30M on a starting pitcher and we have something to build on....

25 Bello (5 yrs) 39 GS, 214 IP

28 Kutter (5 yrs) 36 GS, 208 IP

29 Giolito (1 yr) 178 GS, 1013 IP

31 Pivetta (1 yrs) 153 GS, 883 IP

28 Houck (4 yrs) 41GS, 252 IP

28 Whitlock (3 yrs + 2 opt)19 GS, 223 IP

Sox have said that both Houck and Whitlock will be stretched out during spring training.

Yeah the glove was shaky - hopefully 2B helps - but it looks like he can hit.

His defensive profile scares me, but he was projected to grow into an average fielder, maybe he can be that moved off of SS, maybe not. It’s not hard to be better than what we had up the middle in 2023.

His bat looks good, he’s hit everywhere he’s been and is only entering his age 23 season.

When he was a prospect in Atlanta’s system he was projected as an above average hitter with the hope he’d start to hit for power. He has the frame and athleticism to grow into some more. If he does that he could easily play a corner if he can’t play D up the middle.

He won’t be a free agent until 2030. It won’t take much for him to be more valuable than one year of Chris Sale, especially if Chris Sale is only pitching 15-20 games.

I like it. I like it a lot more if they go out and get another pitcher. Not to replace Sale. I want Giolito to replace Sale. I want an upgrade on the mound now.

I’ll hold my breath.
