    Other contending teams have superior hitting lineups. If you're fine with this years Bello at 5 and that depth, I don't know what to say to you.

    Last years Bello is absolutely not good enough. Not anywhere close.

    I'm not particularly interested in other teams rotations to be honest, a third (maybe higher) of the league is actively not bothering to try and win it would seem. Bello at 5, followed by Houck, Crawford and Oviedo is not good enough for a team looking to get deep into the playoffs, never mind a WS. We have next to no depth. That needs sorting. Especially with the rate of injuries to pitchers.

    There's zero chance those three don't get their arbs. Why would you let them walk for that price? Duran will almost certainly get his, too.

    I don't know how many teams have a 5th starter with a 10 ERA when starting last year and showed he could only do it out of the bullpen, a 6th who hasn't pitched a start in a year and half, a 7th who hasn't pitched in two years, and 8th who barely pitched for a year either, but that isn't depth, that's a wing and a prayer. Especially as none of us would be really surprised if Crotchet breaks down in Spring Training.

    Yes, as we sadly can't clone him to play RF, SS, and pitch, too. No, just another highly rated pitcher that we no longer have in the minors.

    I'd worry about Anthony breaking more often covering that ground out there for half a year. I assume we're keeping Duran in left? Those three worry me right now.

    Who are you playing in RF then? Nobody we currently have on the roster would fill me with me confidence. Plus Bennett's replacement will cost serious $$$. We have next to no depth in pitching right now.

    I couldn't care less at this point. And am extremely doubtful he'll ever mash again. Send Story, Yoshida and Duran away, even having to swallow huge parts of the contracts for Yoshi and Story. Anthony starting LF. Go get a 3B man with some pop (easier said than done) and move Durbin across to 2B, Arias as our SS, and have Mead DH. C - Adley 1B - Contreras 2B - Durbin SS - Arias 3B - New hitter LF - Anthony CF - Raf RF - Abreu DH - Mead Bench: Wong, Sogard, White, Mona, Romy. I can live with that.

    I think a lockout is coming so he'll be starting there 100%. Then up when we finally (hopefully) get the season going.

    The problem for me has never been that the Sox don't spend enough. They spend plenty. The problem is, they have not spent well for a long time. We are still feeling the affects of this. We're nearly out of the worst of it. but we still have time to spend poorly again. Adley feels like it could work out a bad extension, but after all we've given away we almost have to extend him.

    A step in the right direction maybe, but seeing as we've trade Mookie and Devers, I would say you can rule nothing out.

    I can understand that for sure. But it can't come at the expense of improving. And there are several players I don't think are good enough and shouldn't be here next year. No amount of getting to know them will change that. But, I do get the point that it would be nice to know and like the team long term. Hopefully we can build that. I remain skeptical.

    That may well be. It is separate to the point(s) I was making, however. He was our, or at least one of our, most important offensive players going into the season and we lost him for a large part of it. Now he has question marks over him going into next year (around health) and we can't build a project around him.

    You've misunderstood. I was saying Old Red's opinion is skewed by hindsight and that Anthony was very much seen as the most important offensive weapon going into the season.

    I get your point on seeing the players as human beings and wanting to root for them long term, but not many of the current crop are in the Betts. Bogey, Sale and Devers realm. Yoshida, Story, Duran (and Abreu to a much lesser degree) are players I could easily live without over having them to just 'cheer on' next year. Not to mention that lineup was terrible for most of the year. Running that back just to be able to support the same guys is insanity.

    Not unless we want to trade him to someone he really wants to play for.

    He looks exactly how I looked watching those last two games.

    I think it's almost certainly unmitigated nonsense.

    Yeah another way to frame it - imagine you were told about that summer run and then told we made the playoffs, you'd check the standings and play off results with excitement and no small amount of expectation of a huge season. Then you'd see the standings and results of the play offs and be left in disbelief.

    The Anthony view is skewed heavily by hindsight. Going into the season after an encouraging signs last year and an encouraging World Baseball Classic, he was seen very much as our most important offensive player. Unfairly so, and too much pressure and expectation was on him, but the fact remains. Going into next year, not so much. Now there will just be concerns.

    Yeah, it won't be easy. But he's in DFA territory now and hopefully there's a way to get him, Duran and Yoshida off the team and come out okay.
