Burnes said he won’t sign an extension.

Scott Boras also said, verbatim, that Burnes will explore the market, about a month ago.

He also said Blake Snell should get 9 years and 270 million. He's not always a fountain of solid information.

Not really. He's bombastic.

If Burnes likes Baltimore and they make him an offer he likes, Boras will just be the guy doing the paperwork.

What I'm saying is, him trying to drum up a player's price is one thing. But he advises pretty much all of his players to test the market. Burnes is someone who has openly said he wants to test the market too. If they had conflicting opinions that would be a whole other deal.

I wouldn't fall of my chair if the O's extend him to a stupid deal, but I doubt it.

You'll see. ;)

If he does well in Baltimore, and the team does well that may change his mind to an extension if a good one is offered.

No.

Burnes has had two arbitration fights with Milwaukee that he lost and has been rather public with his feeling he is grossly underpaid. His top priority is clearly lots and lots of money, and he switched to Boras as his agent this year, which certainly is a step in that direction.

If Burnes extends with Baltimore, it will be solely because they met his demands, not because the team does well. He also has a huge advantage over Montgomery and Snell in that he can wait 9 months to make up his mind...

That second part about the offer he likes is a little more complicated than you imply here.

Agreed.

If Baltimore extends him, it will something in the neighborhood of Gerrit Cole money.

SAying Burnes will explore the market simpy means he is not signing unless you blow him away right now with roughly the same money he would expect to make as a free agent. This isn't a simple case here...

I simply have a suspicion that part of the reason the O's new owners pushed this trade was that they will try to extend him. I don't think that's totally off the wall.

I know. We do see players take those extensions though. Castillo and Glasnow being recent examples.

I don’t think Burnes would get to what amounts to a 10yr contract worth that amount of money.

Unless there's a plague and he feels pressured to sign. Remember, the Dodgers only traded for one year of Mookie -- not 12; that's why Bloom's return was so great for a Hall of Famer about to enter his prime and have multiple MLB-leading WAR years, receive more MVP votes than anyone else, and lead his club to perpetual 100-win seasons.

I just proof read what I typed and got see sick.

MLBTR...

The Red Sox have acquired catcher Tyler Heineman from the Mets, per announcements from both teams. The latter club, who designated Heineman for assignment earlier this week, receive cash considerations in return. The Sox designated right-hander Max Castillo for assignment in a corresponding move.

Why not? he's one of the best in baseball, and has been a top 10 guy every single year for the past 4 years including a cy young. He will also be entering free agency four years later than Cole, so you have to factor 4 years of player salary inflation. Unless he falls off a cliff next season, he's probably commanding a contract around 300 million dollars.

And they'd like to make a big statement of intention. It's unlikely but definitely wouldn't be shocking.

An equivalent Sox package might look something like Wikelman Gonzalez/Ceddanne Rafeala.

If he would have signed an extension, I would have been ok with that.

I would have been more than fine with the package - but not going more then 6/7 years on an extension.

David Price was a very good pitcher. A winner. He gets way too much criticism on here. 46-24 with Boston. 157-82 career. 66 % winning percentage . Only one losing season, 12-13. ( I know, I know. Here we go again. Wins don't matter ) His career ERA of 3.32 is better than a lot of more highly regarded hurlers. Deserves more respect than he gets.

Isn't that issue, signing extension?

We have limited budget. Plus I believe he's a Borass client. No way he signs an extension.

He was start to the team's momentum to a World Series win.

Good enough for me.

Although we were warned it may cost us later.

What stands out to me is the 2019 failure. You can' t blame the ownership for that year. Our highest payroll ever.

Probably what soured Henry.

Agreed, but not bringing back Kimbrell & Kelly was a sign of change, even before the 2019 dip. (Not replacing them was part of the reason for the dip, too.)

But then again, as a fan, I lost all respect for and interest in him after the Eck incident. I don't care what his stats are, were, or could have been. And I imagine there are a lot of fans (not so many on this board) who judge players in similar ways. We (if there are more like me) don't judge players as stat sheets or tokens in a fantasy league.

They went slow with the starters in April and the team never caught back up. One bad year shouldn’t doom a franchise though considering what we’re looking at now.

OMG! Tyler Freaking Heinemann!!!!! Now that Theo is back, big things afoot.

Crag loves his catchers. I thinks it’s good for pitching development to have high quality catchers in the upper minors. Last year it was Alfaro and Scott. Not a great combo.

JBJ had a similar incident too. At least with Price he was standing up for a teammate. IDK. Bad look. Players nowadays have been coddled since tball and any criticism just wilts them.
