What a difference a new owner makes.Think a new one for the Red Sox would do the same?

And like I said in the other thread, maybe the O's will also sign Monty or Snell now. What a kick in the head that would be to the stunned bunnies that make up our front office.

It's hard to imagine anyone paying what it will cost to buy the Sox without the intent to actually invest in the product on the field (like the last time new owners took over).

Put it this way: there can't be many rich TV moguls who'd rather focus on "the Fenway experience", and instead spend on say, less soggy buns for the franks, or student giveaways like free posters of the team logo.

Maybe the "Fenway Experience" will eventually include "free" entertainment programming that fans can watch on their cell phones if they're tired of watching the un-entertaining team on the field.

According to Tom Werner, the Red Sox lead the division in imaginary wins. One of his front office wizards told him they could've won 10 more games with a normal defense last year.

Ten more wins and the Sox are sniffing the postseason... so the plan is finally clear. Why spend big trying to be dominant, when "just normal" can get you a wild card?

Lots of yes men in the FO. Org needs an enema.

… which also begs the question “What have they done to get the defense back to normal?”

Breslow, Bailey and the other new gurus are going to teach our pitchers to throw so hard that reliance on defense will be minimized.

The big thing is too is that Baltimore didn’t really have to give up that much to get Burns if only for a year.

They gave up two Baseball America Top 100 prospects for one year of a pitcher…

And a great move it was for the here, and now. They gave up a SS who wasn’t even their top rated SS, and they have a good young SS with the big club as well. Win, win for the O’s and who says they won’t extend Burnes? A for the O’s is all the grades I saw.

But was it? he just came off a season where he finished 2nd in Cy young voting two years in a row, top 6 for 5 of the last 6 years including a Cy Young, FWars of 4.8, 4.3, 4.0, 5.6, 6.7, 4.4

Very similiar numbers to Garrit Cole before he signed his 324 million dollar contract.

The market isn't set by us fans. We just have a tendency to think everything is too much.

If the Sox end up signing Montgomery and SNell, odds half the board will be upset (to varying degrees) and calling it a gross overpay.

The thing is, I'm okay with overpays, when needed.

I thought the Price signing was just what we needed, and thet he was about as "sure a bet" as you could ever hope for in an "overpay."

Only thing is, the current version of the 2024 Sox looks to have an excellent chance of being even worse than the 2022-2023 teams. The plan might shift to "Fire sale and tank!" before our eyes.

We should sign a bunch of one year guys, with the idea of trading them at the deadline.

Plus the 34th pick in the next draft.

I can see why teams are asking for the world on 2+ year pitchers.

Why is everyone speculating on here that Burnes will only be in Baltimore for a year, and not get extended?

Nah, that never happens. When we traded Mookie we all knew he was going to free agency...

The trade was for one year of Burnes, regardless of extension. Why is anyone assuming they gave up very little to get him?

Because there must be tons of posters on Brewerstalk.com today insisting Milwaukee could still re-sign him next winter...

The consensus seems to be that the O's did well on the deal. That's not the same as saying they gave up very little, of course.

Burnes said he won’t sign an extension.

Everyone is giving the O’s an A for the trade. They gave up a SS who is 3rd in line behind a better prospect, and a rookie of the year SS who’s ahead of them both. You look at it however you you want to, but to me it’s a win, win for the O’s. Extension next will even make it better.

Unless he gets blown away.

The new owners might be all in on a hefty extension offer and had it in mind when they did this.

Their 3rd in line SS would have been worth it to me. He’s also 25, and not 19.

They are minority owners until Peter Angelos dies. How much sway do they have right now? The sale hasn’t even been approved yet.

If he does well in Baltimore, and the team does well that may change his mind to an extension if a good one is offered.

Do you think this trade would even have happened without them coming on board? The new guys are loaded, the rest will sort itself out.

I like my dramatic narrative and I'm running with it for now...

The other thing is we have to see how much loot fellow Boras clients Snell and Montgomery end up getting...

No idea. I think it makes the Sox just look worse, which ultimately should be good for the direction of the franchise.
