Yep, 4 more years of team control.

We'll have Story for another 3 years. We can't keep Mayer down for three more years. Why would we move premier young shortstop to 2B? Are we still not high on Grissom? He's under team control for 5 more years.

With this trade you still keep the OF of Abreu, Rafaela and Duran. They are under team control beginning 2025 for 5, 7 and 4 years. To me Keel seems more valuable or needed to catch alongside Wong.

CC Wong (4)/Keel (6)

1B Casas (4)/RH bat that can DH (not suggesting platooning)

2B Grissom (5)/Hamilton (5)

SS Story (3+1)

3B Devers (9)

LF Duran (4)/Refs

CF Rafaela (7)

RF Abreu/Refs (5)

DH O'Neill/Yoshida

This lineup is good enough. AND THEY GIVE US 4+ YEARS OF WINDOW OF OPPORTUNITY TO CHASE THE TITLE.

We just need better starting pitching.

Abreu is a good player, but I don't think he's really blocking Anthony or anything. He's fine until someone better comes along.

No, he is not blocking Anthony, but as part of a platoon, he makes it okay to trade Anthony.

Obviously, Anthony brings back more than Abreu.

I don’t think Roman Anthony could get George Kirby in a trade unless Breslow kidnapped Jerry Dipoto’s kids and made that trade his sole ransom demand.

And even then, DiPoto might negotiate down, asking for one kid and he’ll deal Bryan Woo…

No, but Anthony, Fitts and 2 mid levels might.

Maybe it takes Anthony and Campbell.

I think that Mayer would playSS and Story 2B

With Campbell and Montgomery, the Sox OF depth feels semi-secure. SS feels exposed, although I’m confident Romero can fill Story’s shoes on the Injured List. Not sure who lines up between second and third next year…

Ha Seong Kim in FA? Willy Adames? Paul DeJong?

The deal would be Mayer and Anthony for Kirby as proposed. If the M's want to loan us Mayer, that's cool too.

Yes, I know the offer suggested. I was speaking to point being made about trading Mayer rather than playing him at 2B.

People talked all offseason about trading with the M's. I just don't see them dealing their cost effective pitchers.

you'd think, but as far as they've fallen the last month, they might be getting desperate. they were 10 games up on the Astros (and 12 games over .500) on June 18, now they're 1 game back and 2 games over.

The Mariners are still in the AL West picture, but getting farther away from even the third Wild Card. Still, I think they add bats using sources besides the young pitching because that young pitching makes them contenders for a few years in the immediate future. They can find other trade chips to get some bats. And also hope JRod breaks out of his season-long slump sometime soon…

he just went on the IL with a high ankle sprain. it may be a while before he is back.

Jerry Dipoto has been there enough years that he is the one on the hot seat for results. He can only worry about 2024 . He needs a hitter and now to spark his lineup. . Dipoto would definitely trade 1 pitcher a strong bat and a second capable bat. Try offering

O'Neill and Gonzalez for starter and a reliever. See what Jerry says

I would imagine DiPoto would turn that down almost immediately, as his job definitely involves building next year’s team as well and he has to keep an eye on the future.

I don’t think Abreu gets you any of the Seattle starters. O’Neill just isn’t worth enough. Gonzalez add nothing to the trade package. ..

Baltimore is a much better matchup than Boston. If Seattle is willing to deal one of their young starters, dealing Miller for someone like Colby Mayo or Sam Bassallo…

We should ask Harmony his opinion on Dipoto, but I'll wager he gets fired after the season if they do not make the playoffs . Hence, his motivation, unlike Breslow's, is short term not the future.

Sox L-R Splits for 2024:

v RHP

1.152 Devers

.936 Duran

.853 Abreu

.807 Casas (IL)

.786 Refsnyder

.776 DHam

.767 Yoshida

.761 Valdez

.754 O'Neill

.743 Wong

.682 Smith

.677 Rafaela

.588 Romy G

.581 McGuire

.241 Westbrook

v LHP

1.161 O'Neill

.994 Casas (IL)

.913 Refsnyder

.886 Wong

.852 Westbrook

.760 Smith

.791 Romy G

.725 Rafaela

.637 Devers

.577 Yoshida

.533 McGuire

.494 DHam

.449 Abreu

.325 Valdez

Looking at the splits, it looks like these players should be near strict platoons:

v L sit out: Abreu, DHam and probably Yoshida

v R sit out: Romy & Westbrook

C: Wong as near to FT as possible.

1B: Not many options beyond Smith, until Casas returns (Romy could play v L)

2B: DHam (v R) and Romy/Westbrook (vL)

SS: Rafaela could play FT or DHam (v R but see 2B) -Romy (v L)

3B: Devers plays FT

LF: O'Neill v R/ Refsnyder v L

CF: Duran FT (unless Rafaela in CF, see SS)

RF: Abreu v R/ O'Neill v L

DH: Yoshida v R/ Yoshida, Ref v L

I’ll take that wager.

I think Dipoto has done a good job for that organization and a lot of his team’s issues start with the struggles of JRod. I don’t think his job is in danger unless he does something insane like trade one of his young starters in Miller or Woo plus a reliever for Tyler O’Neill and Romy Gonzalez.

But if they do want to deal a starter for some bats, I could see Bryan Woo (37.5) to Baltimore for Heston Kjerstad (34) as making a ton of sense for both teams…

That’s a good proposal. I’d make that if I was the GM for either team.

2 months of O'Neill will not land several years of a good SP'er.

Abreu plus a couple mid levels might do the trick.

i agree but my comment was in regards to the Woo for Kjerstad trade notin suggested.

The Dead Sox have only 1 win in the last 11 days and it's really pissing me off! Couldn't even squeeze like 5 wins or so during that time?!?!? WTH?

They'd rather win games that don't count for a manager they don't even play for!!!

Paxton to the Sox

Boston is sending one prospect from their Dominican Summer League affiliate to the Dodgers in the deal, Ardaya reports. That’ll be 17-year-old infielder Moises Bolivar, Alex Speier of the Boston Globe reports.

I hope Brez does not think this ia major get. We still need 2 RP'ers and a RHB.

Posted

Who moves to the pen? Pivetta or Criswell?

My choice: go to a 6 man rotation to help limit the IP on Houck and Crawford.

Posted

Paxton has been hit or miss, pretty much all season.

18 GS

6 bad to horrible starts

3 meh to okay to starts (6IP-3ER, 5IP-3ER and 5IP-2ER)

9 good to very good starts

first 2: 11 IP 2ER 7H 6BB 9K

GS#4: 4.2 and 1ER

GS6-8: 18.2 and 4ER

GS#10: 3IP 0ER

GS12-14: 18IP 2ER (7H, 6BB, 16K) June 11-24th not so long ago

His last 3 starts were bad:

13.2 IP

8 ER (5.27 ERA)

13H

10BB (5.62 FIP)

11K

(last 4, even worse)

Let's hope he can give us a two to three 3 game stretches, going forward.

This deal, alone is just a bandaid.

No, Brez is really stupid. We would just toy with him here.

This is just a meh deal. We will just have to wait, and see what else is done. Paxton is at least another arm at this point, but more is need.
