OPS for 2nd base is 15th in AL.

1B & SS is 9th and DH 11th.

Grissom's OPS is .297. I think I'm more concerned that he is not at 'full strength' and he literally means it. He lost about 15 lbs when his debut was delayed with the flue.

If we're still in contention by May 31st and he's not hitting any better, he maybe platooned. It's unfortunate but with Casas out we can't have too many more black holes.

Perhaps OBP guru Meidroth who has 28 walks and 30 hits in AAA should be brought up.

I'm sorry, but I've never heard of anyone in this era of modern medicine who lost 15 lbs from the flu. My thought is that Grissom hit AAA pitching but can't hit MLB pitching--exactly the same as Dalbec and probably a bunch of other players.

I definitely hope I'm wrong, which is a good bet anyway because I don't know jack about baseball. I prefer to rage about Grissom because Sale--whose $17M salary the Sox are paying--is looking so good this year.

Grissom did have success against MLB pitching before (.746 OPS with Atlanta). Right now it’s just 37 PA. Not everyone starts out hot..

He's still in Spring Training mode while the rest of the league is in midseason form.

I'd have Whitlock dump his cutter. I think a sinker/slider/changeup combo is good enough for a reliever. If his body can't hold up to a starter's workload, just further develop those 3 pitches.

The report may be untrue, but...

Red Sox second baseman Vaughn Grissom is trying to regain weight after losing 14 pounds while battling for the flu last week. “His breakfast today was very unhealthy,” Red Sox Manager Alex Cora said on Sunday after Boston's 9-2 win over the Twins

Which of his 5 pitches is his worst?

Which puts the most strain on his arm?

That would be a vicious flu, that I would think would require hospitalization.

While recent trends and current numbers are not a reliable predictor of things to come, I do wonder if it makes sense to keep Duran leading off.

OBP Leaders for 2024:

.448 Refsnyder

.387 Devers

.381 O'Neill

.375 Wong

.373 Abreu

.350 Romy G

.348 Yoshida

.342 McGuire

.325 Duran

.267 Cooper

.238 Rafaela

.206 Smith

.135 Grissom

I'm thinking Wong, but maybe some sort of platoon lead-off hitter might make more sense. Some batter seem to be having reverse splits over the first quarter of the season. Here are some meaningful OBPs of possible lead-off hitters:

2024 vs RHPs

.469 Refsnyder (not his usual split)

.396 Abreu (maybe not an ideal lead-off option)

.344 Wong (R v R)

.304 Duran

2024 vs LHP

.425 Wong

.423 Refsnyder

.375 Duran (reverse split, this year)

Maybe go with Wong first. (He might not be bad as the numbr 2 guy, either.)

Good point. Plus my "insights" are opinions--except about the flu.

For a guy with a low bmi and mainly muscle?

Back when I was in shape and playing sports day and night, I once lost 9 pounds from wake-up to after a Basketball game that night. (I played in a racquetball that afternoon.)

I sweat a lot.

Hey I can only go by what I read.....I nelieve NESN followed up by saying his bat feels like a big lumber or something heavy due to weight loss.

Probably mostly due to dehydration.

Yup. I see no reason to doubt it. Losing 5 pounds in as little as a day is not difficult. (It's no fun, but most of that weight is water). Although I also agree with 700 above that 14 pounds might well put you on the verge of hospitalization.

Indeed!

He should have been on an IV. Where were the team docs?

If he quickly gained back 10-12 of the 14 lost, it was obviously water.

I don't know about anyone else but our 1B tandem sucks.

It's really bad when they both play. 0-8 coming up.

So much ch for the idea that GMs can find capable 1Bmen in May.

I would actually like to think I'm somewhat of an expert on this.

In Highschool I wrestled, and throughout my 20's I competed in Wrestling, BJJ, Muay Thai fighting in various promotions from NAGA to Friday night fights. Pretty much I spent 15 years of my life "making weight" so I can say that losing 15 lbs of water weight is practically nothing.

Almost wish I could go back and do it again with all the knowledge I have on nutrtition today. People do not realize how much your body weight can vary from day to day based on your diet, and even from morning to evening. Try cleaning up your diet, load up on some potassium after two days and weigh yourself in the morning.

People forget the human body is mostly water, and water stores in fat and muscle so even at a lower BF% a man who is 6'2 and weighs 210 (what he's listed, maybe he walked in two days later and was 225) should be able to lose that weight after a few days of being sick, if he's dehydrated and hasn't eaten a lot.

Now, if that all muscle he lost in such a short amount of time, I would be insanely worried. Very worried. But I think it's pretty much impossible to lose that much muscle mass in such a short period of time.

People aren't conserving their own water anymore? Haven't they read Dune?

Yea guys that no one else wanted, but at least Brez tried something that Bloom wouldn’t do.

Because if Bloom had resolved first base with two players whose OPSs were .523 and .433, you would have been praising his efforts, right?

Some WSP'er numbers:

QS%

78 Houck (team 4-5 in his starts)

56 Crawford (team 3-6 in his starts)

(38% league avg)

25 Pivetta (2-2 in his 4 starts)

17 Bello (5-1 in his starts)

0 all the rest, including openers

If you modify the QS start to count 5 IP and 2 ER or 4 IP w 1 ER allowed, you get these numbers:

QS/GS

8/9 Houck (one miss was 4ER in 5.2 IP- his 12 hit game)

7/8 Crawford (one miss was 4 ER in 6IP

5/6 Bello (one miss was 4 ER in 5 IP)

4/5 Criswell (team is 5-0 in his starts. His only miss was 2 ER in 4 IP)

3/4 Pivetta (one miss was 5ER in 4 IP)

3/4 Whitlock (1-3 in his starts. His only miss was 2 ER in 4 IP)

Total: 30 out of 36 GS! (83.3%)

All of these 6 SP'ers only had one start where they did not meet my modified criteria.

Dime a dozen!

There is a reason they cost just a dime, each.

Look, I think Bloom should have tried something. I forget the guy, but some FA 1Bman signed in June, that year, once Casas went on the IL. He should have tried, and he probably made a bunch of calls, but the reality is, these are the usual results of trades in May and June: scraps.

I know Schwarber was not a May or June addition, but many complained about forcing him to play 1B, at first.

You just can't win.
