Add that to the fact that Swihart has no business on an MLB roster and you have a dept problem

I wanted Swihart to be given a chance at some regular playing time. He has been given that chance and has not been able to take advantage of the opportunity. Sadly, I think it is time to part ways with him.

That is very true and its also true that Swihart does not belong on this team at all. I think the Sox have got to hope that JBJ goes on a run somewhere in here. I just don't see the rational for trading him at this point. In the off season...gladly...but now, I don't think there is an option to hoping he has a serious hot streak somewhere in here.

In my opinion Beni and Devers are a bit too young still to be as under the gun as they are on this team. Beni needs one more year anyway and Devers needs two at least. But here they are...Beni is always in the two hole if not batting lead off if Mookie is out and Devers was cleanup tonight for God sake. So we have two left hand hitters that are basically in diapers batting from 2 and 4 tonight against a LH pitcher and I am not sure I can argue with Cora about that because what choice does he really have?

I agree with you about JBJ. There is no rationale for trading him right now, so we just have to hope he will go on one of his tears. I've been reading a lot about the Sox getting him to start bunting more often, which makes all the sense in the world.

I really don't have a problem with Beni in the 2 hole. IMO, he's been fine in that role after a somewhat shaky start. Devers currently has no business batting clean up.

My recollection is that he is a terrible bunter.

Who isn't, these days?

Ian Browne, a homer if there ever was one, says Cora is talking about Bradley Trying to bunt for base hits, maybe get his OBP over .300. I have watched JBJr try to bunt over the past two years, including yesterday. He has no clue, and probably doesn't want to do it since bunters don't get paid like high K-out guys ( Oh but those guys hit a few HR and doubles too)

Sub .300 OBP guys don't get big paychecks either.

The only thing keeping JBJ's OBP above the Mendoza line is his HBPs.

(Hyperbole alert)

Maybe practicing bunting will help shorten his swing? He hit a solo shot yesterday, is it possible it has already helped him? That’s a fast return:o

He seemed to be having success going the other way but for some reason he seems to have gotten away from that.

I don't think that he can and that is a shame. Most players today practice the art of bashing as opposed to the art of hitting. It makes no difference how hard you hit the ball if you can't hit it where the fielders aren't.

not only is the man not hitting, he makes a brutal error tonight.

Followed up by a brilliant throw.

I'm wondering if Jackie's offensive struggles are starting to affect him defensively. Someone pointed out that he has made a couple of uncharacteristic errors recently.

JBJ should be traded and with the money they would save the might be able to bring up Castillo, who is hitting .313 at AAA. Benny could play center. JBJ just can't hit.

The Sox have about $4 mil in lux cap room before hitting that final hurdle. Bringing up Castillo puts his contract going forward into the lux tax books. He’s making $10.4 mil this year. JBJ is making $6 mil. Prorating that, if the Sox do as you ask and deal him off for minor leaguers only, this freeing his salary, the Sox can bring up Rusney and will have no further room for upgrades. So unless you think he’s the missing link for your club, I’d assume that won’t be an option

Cots has us at $1.675M under the max limit.

There is no way we are bringing up Castillo. His contract would cripple us next year and beyond.

I doubt we trade JBJ, but if we do now, we'd add about $3M to the number above. Trading him at the deadline would add about $2M.

There will be players available at or before the deadline that would be better options than Castillo.

I agree. I don't think Castillo is a solution to anything here in 2018.

He wouldn't be a solution if they had all the cap space in the world.

Most likely not, but at least we'd have called him up, seen how he still sucks, and we'd have shut up all these Rusney lovers once and for all.

Jackie has been hitting the ball very well with almost nothing to show for it. From Red Sox Stats:

Look at the BABIP and those 'x' numbers.

yup - pretty interesting. Maybe he should try hitting them somewhere else other than where the fielders are standing.

I've been on the Rusney Castillo train longer than most nearly everyone, But even I don't advocate bringing him up this year and I get why he isn't coming up. ..

On another thread a poster suggested a trade of two-plus increasingly expensive years of Jackie Bradley for the expiring contract of Minnesota second baseman Brian Dozier.

Minnesota could get more for Dozier. Plus they are only 5 1/2 behind the Guardians; they won’t be in sell mode yet and if they play like they did the 2nd half last year, they won’t be.

Like you always say thanks, Ben.
