  1. Marlins are a decent team, and really good at home. You don’t need to be gifting them runs. Tonight’s pitching matchup doesn’t favor the Sox, but you want to make them earn it.
  2. I doubt it due to having to dive to just stop the ball. He made the right play trying for the force at home; his throw was a little off.
  3. The OP (DejaDoh) said the 1B should have tried a reverse force DP, which would have required a tag at second. No way was there time for that before White would have scored.
  4. Not to mention the 1B had to dive for the ball. A good throw gets White but that’s it. Rafaela is fast and wasn’t being held on; there’s no way the fielder gets up, steps on first and then gets the throw to second in time for a tag before White scores. He would have barely gotten Eli at the plate with a good throw (though a 1-2-3 DP may have been possible).
  5. Correct. I’m also guessing that the Giants’ announcers said he was 5 for his last 15 with the Sox, which was also correct earlier in this game. Fred has trouble hearing sometimes.
  6. Agree. He’ll hit a few homers within a 3-4 games and go back to trying to pull everything. It’s been his pattern all year. It’s hard to believe a guy with his speed has only got 13 doubles all year after being over 40 the past two seasons and over 30 in 2023 (in only 102 games). Even Narvaez had 6 in less than 30 percent of the plate appearances
  7. Nah, booing implies you give a darn. Best thing to do would be utter silence. The opposite of love isn’t hate, it’s indifference.
  8. No offense, but you’d DFA half the team followed by whatever AAA guys that replace them. This is where losing Whitlock and Slaten hurts.
  9. Yes. If he’s on the 40 man and there is a stoppage, he can’t participate in any official baseball activities. That means minor league games in addition to any medical treatment, etc. There is a political consideration as well (and let’s leave any comments on current federal immigration policy aside please; it is what it is). Arias is from Venezuela, so I assume he’s here on a work visa of some sort. If he’s not being paid, would he even be allowed back into the US? If not, that means he’s left with whatever workouts he can cob together in his home country. IMO, they are better off leaving him at Worcester and having him actually playing baseball rather than doing who knows what in Venezuela. He’s 20-21, he needs to play. Plus they lose a year of control if he’s on the 40 man, even if there’s no season. I don’t envy the prople wio have to make these decisions
  10. Do you remember Impossible Dream team pitcher John Wyatt? Edit - per Baseball Reference, not only have the Sox never had an Olds, no one has. He’s the first one ever to make the majors.
  11. Is that the first time a Sox opener hasn’t allowed a run in the first inning this season?
  12. He had a wrist injury. Let’s get him to 30-40 ABs and then evaluate. Why these guys (and the organization) think 6 rehab ABs is enough is beyond me, Story needs to take 10 games worth minimum. Anthony and IKF as well. Anthony might do well to take the full 20 days.
  13. He’s going to be the bulk guy tomorrow; they are pushing everyone back a day. At this point, Sandoval can be his own long man; they aren’t winning this one. He goes 5 and then let Burgos do 3 to finish up.
  14. Before we fit Baez for his plaque in Cooperstown, how about we see how his second game goes.
  15. Durbin’s got that little hop. If a pitcher can time it, he’s easy pickings.
  16. The OP didn’t say managing the Sox, he said managing a team. There are 29 other possible places (yes, not all are available for a landing now).
  17. In this rare instance, Sam may not have been lying. I truly believe the Florida thing was about getting Mayer and Anthony separated. Cora was past his due date in Boston, but he was likely correct when he called Marcelo’s work ethic/attitude out in spring training. Be interesting to see what happens to MM in the Giants organization. He began a rehab assignment last night; there was no indication of that be imminent 2 weeks ago.
  18. I’ll repeat my response to SplendidSplinter. Those were the first runs he’s allowed in 11 games since July 5th, a span in which he allowed a total of 3 hits and most of which were 7th inning type appearances. Chapman’s been far shakier over the last month; is he not a high leverage guy anymore? No pitcher has it every time out. Heck, even Mariano Rivera managed to blow back to back saves in Games 4 and 5 of the 2004 ALCS. I guess the Yankees should have just given up on him.
  19. He’s not the closer material many saw in him, but these were the first runs he’s allowed since July 5, covering 11 appearances. In those 11 games, he allowed a total of 3 hits. Chapman’s been far shakier over the last month than Slaten.
  20. Different roles. Weissert has often been brought in with multiple men on; situations where it is difficult to get out of cleanly for most pitchers. He’s a 1 inning guy. Burgos is a starter (at least in the minors) and can go 3-4 innings if need be in long relief. His stuff doesn’t play to the role Weissert was too often asked to fill and Weissert’s stuff doesn’t play to the role Burgos is filling. Burgos likely goes down to Worcester after this one; Sox want to give an extra day rest to all their starters so Gamboa or someone else will be brought up to start tomorrow.
  21. They’d have walked Abreu and Durbin, putting the game in Jones hands. Tough spot either way.
  22. Except he pitched 3 innings 2 nights ago. He’s stilL used to a starters routine. OTOH, he’s been really good after his 1st inning all year. Something has to give.
