  1. Bright side: There's nowhere to go but up!
  2. I know I've posted this before, and I know how bad Mayer has been against lefties, but I don't think he should be platooned. He's not going to improve against lefties unless he gets the at bats against them. (In a very small sample, he has good numbers against LHP so far this year.) Anthony has been most disappointing this year.
  3. No doubt it probably would have been bad. But the middle infield defense (namely 2nd base) would have been much better than what we had.
  4. I'm in the camp that says to take the risk and extend them early. Either that, or you risk the player pricing himself out of reasonable range.
  5. I really didn't have any problems with keeping Devers at 3B and playing Bregman at 2B. That said, I wouldn't want Devers back, even if the Giants ate a big chunk of his contract. He lost me when he put himself before the team.
  6. I'm a big fan of Story's, but I tell you, when he is going bad, it's really bad. Durbin has also been disappointing so far, but at least he's been good on defense.
  7. I hate the Rays, so it wasn't refreshing for me to see them scratch out runs against the Red Sox. That said, I think Kevin Cash deserves a lot of credit. Things will likely change a lot by the end of the season, but who would have thought the Rays would have the 2nd best winning % in all of baseball at this point? It has been refreshing to watch some other teams play, and watch other teams be able to overcome 3, 4, or 5 run deficits.
  8. Exhausting is a good way to describe this team. The pitching has looked pretty good as of late, but the offense is truly unwatchable. I'm still waiting for them to turn the corner... Our saving grace is that the entire American League pretty much stinks, outside of a couple of teams.
  9. They have been really pathetic to this point, no doubt. Do you think that will continue? Do you think they are as bad as they are currently performing? I don't. I don't expect them to out-offense the Yankees, but I do expect them to be a lot better than what they're currently showing. And perhaps the Yankees fall into a midseason funk. You never know.
  10. I love both Francona and Cora. IMO, both are very good players managers, which also IMO, is far more important than being a good in-game strategist. That said, perhaps it was time for Francona to go when he did. And perhaps it was time for Cora to go, not that the underperformance of the team is necessarily his fault. I think I am more upset by the disrespect that Varitek is feeling from the team. By all accounts, he is one of the hardest-working coaches in baseball. I'm not sure what his "re-assignment" is all about. Re-assign him to future manager of the team.
  11. As optimistic as I am that the Red Sox will make the playoffs, I really can't see them winning the division. It's not just about the poor start that the Sox got off to, it's also about how good the Yankees are playing. That said, I also wouldn't rule it out completely. Stranger things have happened. That's why you play the games.
  12. Anthony needed to be moved out of the lead off spot. I, too, like Duran leading off, despite his current numbers. I also like (in a very small sample) how the team seems like they will be doing more running. They're not hitting a lot of home runs, so take advantage of that athleticism on the basepaths.
  13. I'm still very optimistic that the Sox will make the playoffs. They will hit better than they have been hitting. They were probably never going to be a top 5 offense, but nor should they be anywhere near the bottom 3 in offense. They're much better than that. As Crochet said, a team can't be out of the playoffs in April. There's a lot of baseball left to be played.
  14. I've always liked and supported Cora. I'm not sure that he deserved to be fired, but as you said, something needed to be done. The team is underperforming at a level that is unprecedented. I wish Cora well. He will have no problems getting another job. Fatse and the other hitting coaches definitely needed to go, IMO. Their approach/philosophy was not working at all.
  15. I'm not usually one who pushes for firing coaches/managers when a team is struggling, but when a team is performing as poorly as the Red Sox currently are, I think it's fair to call into question the coaching and managing. There is something inherently wrong with our hitting philosophy. It's not poor roster construction. We don't need to hit homeruns, necessarily, but we do need to be able to make contact and put the ball in play. I am also finding myself questioning Cora's effectiveness in the clubhouse, which, if you know me, you know goes against my typical support and love of Cora. This team has me in a funk that I don't like being in.
  16. We aren't as bad as we are making ourselves look. We will start playing better baseball at some point, hopefully sooner than later. But I have zero confidence in this team to be able to win a game right now. Forget about coming back from a 3-run deficit. On a bright note, our batters only struck out 4 times last night. That's progress.
  17. As Red Sox fans, we are suffering. BUT, it could be worse. We should remember these records and revisit them at the end of the season. By 'we', I mean you, Notin. LOL I won't remember.
  18. I'm not a believer of setting one's line up based on recent production or lack thereof, but I do think it's time to give Anthony a rest from hitting lead off. Nothing to do with the line up, but I am really liking what I've seen from Contreras at first base.
  19. Not really. LOL That said, unlike most here, I've never had an issue with Bloom. I just don't like the Cardinals. I just noticed that the Brewers are in last place in that division with a .571 winning percentage. Yikes. It'll be interesting to see how that division plays out over the season.
  20. It was still a very frustrating game to watch for so many reasons. That said, I'll gladly take the Win.
  21. Also in the meantime, I'll take enjoyment in following Francona's Reds, with their NL Central leading 14-8 record and -8 run differential. LOL
  22. Absolutely. Of course, we don't know how much truth there is to this, and if there is truth to it, how many players are "a lot" that are being late. At any rate, shame on any player who is showing up late with no good reason, and shame on Cora if he is letting any player get away with it.
  23. It is astounding how poorly the Red Sox are performing, with the exception of a few players. They have not been much fun to watch, even when they win. In fact, it's been downright agonizing. I still expect them to make the playoffs, but in the meantime, it's been pure frustration. I didn't sign up for this. :(
  24. Well, if there's any truth to the rumor that a lot of the team has been showing up late, that speaks very poorly about the team's professionalism and their attitude towards righting the ship. There's no excuse for not showing up every day, no matter how bad things get. Cora should bench every one of them.
