From MLBTradeRumors:

In addition to Boston, Bregman has been tied to the Tigers and Cubs this winter. Evan Petzold of The Detroit Free-Press wrote on Monday afternoon that Detroit’s interest had been fairly muted to this point compared to last offseason, when they are believed to have put forth the highest offer. The Tigers made a six-year proposal narrowly above $170MM a year ago. Bregman opted for a three-year deal with the Sox that allowed him to opt out and return to the market this winter.

Chicago reportedly made a four-year proposal in the $115MM range last offseason. They’re back in the market and met with Bregman via Zoom a few weeks ago, according to Robert Murray of FanSided. However, the Cubs’ interest is complicated by the presence of second-year third baseman Matt Shaw. After a slow start to his career, Shaw had a nice second half that tapped into some of the ability that made him a top prospect. The Cubs have Nico Hoerner and Dansby Swanson up the middle, so adding Bregman would make for a cluttered infield.

President of baseball operations Jed Hoyer spoke generally about reports that have tied the Cubs to external third basemen. “I’ve been surprised by the number of media reports that link us to different guys. There is zero lack of confidence in Matt. I would say the opposite,” Hoyer said on Monday (link via Jesse Rogers of ESPN). He didn’t refute interest in Bregman specifically, nor are executives allowed to do so under the CBA for any free agent. The Cubs aren’t closing the door on adding a high-end bat to replace Kyle Tucker, but they appear more focused on pitching.

Yeah I saw this. The market for Bregman appears to be razor thin.

Okamoto is still out there, and he's a better all-around player than Alonso. OK can play Ok at 1B and 3B. And he doesn't strike out.

The Sox value versatility, and god bless them, may actually be looking for more contact than another all-or-nothing swinger. More likely, they're looking to spend less on OK than Polar Bear.

Of course, they can still sign Bregman, who we already know fits in... and then trade for Marte. Or Donovan. Or Diaz.

But if they pivot to Suarez, I'll throw up in mouth.

Laughing at myself for even thinking it, but how wrong  is the Sox FO for thinking that Triston Casas  won't make an amazing comeback player of the year in 2026.

It will become more evident as the season goes on that 2027 may not be played as the millionaires fight the billionaires, so multi-year deals are less predictable in outcomes for the  over 30 age players.

All of which gives Breslow the easy defense for not being competitive in chasing these guys.

Red Sox draw artificial lines in the sand and don't get "uncomfortable" no matter how much they say they do. It's fine if Alonso isn't THAT guy. However, when the right move is there, they need to really go for it.

they're just not being serious. they don't upgrade when they can. they pull this "we're interested in ________" s*** every f***ing year when we all know it's ********. and then sign some loser to fill a hole that could have easily been filled with a better player. John Henry still trying to be the smartest greedy billionaire in the room and just coming out looking like a stupid greedy billionaire.

I know one poster on here said Alonso would like Boston over Baltimore. I guess he didn’t read the room very well. All that hard work of penciling in Alonso in a imaginary Red Sox batting order down the drain.

No, once again you are wrong. I said, if the offers were even, "I THINK" he'd prefer BOS.

Big difference.

if they value "versatility", it makes me wonder what the f*** they were thinking when they signed Yoshida.

The Red Sox were hard up for OF at they time.

That was Bloomie's mistake not Breslows.        Yoshida with a good first half may actually become tradable at the deadline.  Without a good showing he will be dead weight until the Sox agree to just eat the last year

At this rate there is a very high chance the Red Sox go into next season with a worse roster than this season.

very true. yet it won't stop some of Breslow/Henry's bootlickers from telling us how great they're going to be and how luck we are that we DIDN'T sign Alonso or Bregman or Schwarber or any f***ing player that might, ya' know, make a difference.

Their scouts did a bad job. Did they get rid of those scouts? Funny you should ask that!

Not those ones! Just the ones that got guys like Roman Anthony! 🫣

Bergman would be a fine addition, but then they need a trade or two. Another 1B or 2B starter is needed.  They HAVE to trade an OF and parts to improve another position. Probably need another RP as well, but those are always such a crapshoot.

He’s not an addition. He was already on the team last season. Signing Bregman puts them in essentially same position as last year, while every other team in division is improving.

They traded Devers to save money to acquire another big bat… I’m still waiting On this alleged big bat signing!

They were thinking he was versatile enough to top grounders to both the right side and the left side of the infield.

Plus, there weren't as many cell phone towers four years ago. So Bloom heard a lot of static when he thought his scout in Japan said to sign Masa. Chaim swore he heard "YO Shida! YO MAMA!" but the scout claims he really said, "NO Shida! NO MASA!"

Didn't the O's sign a guy named Chris Davis to a big deal  in this century ?  How did that go ?

  • It was a great contract, for a year.
  • Pujols was a great contract, for a year.
  • Rendon was a great contract, for a year.
  • Bogaerts was a great contract, for a year.

They're all great contracts, until they aren't.
