But will he be an upgrade on D at 2B?

Over the Valdez/Reyes/Arroyo/Turner crowd that played there last year?

I think so.

Grissom is a good player who skated through the Braves’ system. He’d most likely already be their starting 2b, but they already have Ozzie Albies…

So Sale plus $17.5 million for Giollito for $19.5 million and Grissom.

Basically, replaced Sale for Giollito with a price tag of $37 million. Seriously?

Yeah, they should have just held onto Sale for one more year and 120 innings rather than trying to get a decent prospect for him.

Bitch about frail Sale while he’s here. Bitch about the return not being great enough when he’s dealt. Sunrise. Sunset.

Chris Sale has thrown 151 IP since 2019. Giolito threw 184 IP last year alone…

You think a 25yo pitcher with one bad season is a reclamation project?

Not just bad but cataclysmically bad.

Looking at Manoah's innings history, it appears the Jays may have violated the Verducci Effect guidelines and he's paying for it.

Best thing about Sale going to Atlanta is that now we won't have to hear Cora or anyone else tell us we only need to add one starter because we think Sale can come back and give us 180 innings.

Did Chris Sale face a difficult decision to waive his no-trade rights to land in Atlanta?

Chris is still laughing all the way to the bank and finally eligible for some post-season bonus.

My only question, because I do not care about the money paid to Atlanta, is whether Sale might have been worth more at the deadline , assuming he could have helped the rotation through July. The risk was that he self immolates before July and is worthless.

At the end of the day this trade was about 2 things. 1). Cutting payroll. And 2) admitting Yorke was a bad 1st round pick 4 years ago. Anyone who thinks different is not on top of things

Manoah is a punk but we may as well be in on him because we have the juicer now too. Is Trevor Bauer next?

So this is our potential, positional lineup

Age as of 7/1/2024

28 CC Wong (5 yrs of team control)

26 1B Casas (5 yrs)

23 2B Grissom (6 yrs)

27 3B Devers (10 yrs) 27

31 SS Story (4 yrs plus 1)

27 LF Duran (5 yrs)

23 CF Rafaela (6 yrs)

25 RF Abreu (6 yrs)

30 DH Yoshida (4 yrs) 30

29 O'Neill (1 yr)

Go spend $30M on a starting pitcher and we have something to build on....

25 Bello (5 yrs) 39 GS, 214 IP

28 Kutter (5 yrs) 36 GS, 208 IP

29 Giolito (1 yr) 178 GS, 1013 IP

31 Pivetta (1 yrs) 153 GS, 883 IP

28 Houck (4 yrs) 41GS, 252 IP

28 Whitlock (3 yrs + 2 opt)19 GS, 223 IP

Sox have said that both Houck and Whitlock will be stretched out during spring training.

That's at best a 70-92 club. Looks like tough 2024 for us.

I think with Sale, any deal before he has a chance to break is timed perfectly…

Unless

1) teams are asking about Yorke in trades, or

2) Grissom might be traded still

Don’t let your bias against Yorke make every call for you…

well Giolito and the likely starting 2B.

The team was 78-84 and is about the same on paper.

Rotation is a little better. 2b is a little better. OF is worse. Agreed about same on paper. Add another starter and Teoscar and it’s a better team.

I think Grissom can be a big step up over the (-0.9) fWAR the Sox got from 2b last year…

His defense sucked at SS in his short stint last year, but he it was already known that he needed to be moved to 2b and his range will be better there. He’ll be better defensively than Valdez was. Big time prospect who was blocked by Albies.

From 2016-2018, Sale, after Pedro and Clemens, was the third best SP on the Sox in the past half century. But he simply has not been the same since 2018. Since then he’s been an injury waiting to happen. During an offseason long hunt for SP, almost no one on this forum ever reminded us “we do still have Chris Sale, you know.”

Obviously it is pretty obvious how I continue to feel about Chris Sale. I think that it is probably just the loyal in me. It is very rare that you come across any athlete with his intense desire to win. good luck to him. I do not believe that this particular deal helps the club at all.

I'll add that I am beginning to not recognize the ball club I have spent may entire adult life pulling for. From the way they have done business over the last few years to what they have actually accomplished. It makes 0 sense to me.

Nothing wrong with getting a decent prospect for Sale. The problem to me is paying $17M to do it.

That’s my problem with this trade. Not only the Red Sox got a meh prospect, they’re paying $17.5M. This feels like getting screwed in the ass with no lube.

I would have been happy if they had gotten nothing in return for Sale as long as the other team picked up his entire salary.

I do think it helps.

Sale has shown himself to still be good, but I’m the past 4 seasons, he has shown it far too infrequently. He’s thrown 30 fewer IP since 2019 than Giolito threw last year. And while I kept hoping year after year that his annual non-pitching arm/shoulder injuries would not derail the season, something always seemed to derail him.

If it was only one missed year, different story to me any way. But Sale hasn’t been Sale for far too long..

I don’t mind at all, because it’s not like if they kept the $17mill, they would be spending it on someone else.

As a stand alone move it's ******** for sure. All I've heard for two years now is wait until Yorke is ready. Looks to me as though he should be gone all of a sudden. It is possible that our defense up the middle just got worse.

I will freely admit that I am a huge fan of Chris Sales. Yesterday and today. When healthy one of my top 3 or 4 to ever pitch in fenway. I will miss him.

Who has said wait for Yorke?

I don’t like the deal either.

I’d have liked signing Sale for $10M/1. I get the injury issues and the Grisham promise but adding Giolito and then paying Sale $17M to play in ATL does not look good, too me.

Yes, Giolito takes the ball every 5 days, and that has real value, but I don’t see these two moves as an improvement.

Watch Sale start 30 games in ‘24!

But seriously, if we spend the $10M on someone else, it could be fine, but will we see about that. Spending up to or over the tax line would likely make this trade better, assuming Brez spends wisely.

Lots of ifs in this deal.

I’m not sure who said it, but this does look like positioning for something big.

Great post.

Sure, Sale could get hurt.

Sure Giolito might pitch like he has before.

Too many ifs.

We are basically paying $36M for Giolito and a 2Bman over Sale & Reyes/EValdez.

I guess one could think Sale was useless, so we saved $10M and in a sense are paying $9M for Giolito and Grisham, which looks pretty good.

These two deals look puzzling, unless we spend big on a SPer.

It’s really about what they do with the $10M saved. If we end up under the tax line by $10M or more, we gained nothing
