O'Neill is everything Verdugo was not: a two-time Gold Glove leftfielder, a guy who hit 34 home runs in his one full season ('21), and a right-handed batter.

Most importantly, on bb-ref's Similarity Scores, Tyler O'Neill's most similar batter is.... Wily Mo Pena!

Also a factor - Ty cost two borderline fringe depth pitchers instead of free agent money, the better to be saved for legitimate big-time starters...

like Whit Merrifield?

Tyler O'Neill and Alex Vedugo both got benched this year:

exactly--guy is a total cancer. probably my most hated MLB player. i could care less what the Sox do now. So far Breslow is simply Chaim bloom vol 2 and the Sox are a WORSE team than the one that finished last in 2023

BREAKING: The New York Yankees are acquiring outfielder Alex Verdugo in a trade with the Boston Red Sox for right-handeres Richard Fitts, Greg Weissert and Nicholas Judice, sources familiar with the deal tell ESPN.

Minnesota fans compare the trade values of Alex Verdugo and Max Kepler:

TWINSDAILY.COM

There's been various talk for the last few years about Kepler being traded. The Twins indication that they're going to be lowering payroll in 2024 is the driving factor this offseason while it's previously been about a perceived logjam of corner outfielders, especially ones that hit left handed. ...

Maybe a fresh team for O Neil will be what he needs

Brez is definitely taking a chance that Tyler O is a change-of-scenery guy. Not a confidence-booster for Sox fans sick and tired of Bloom fliers -- especially if this means there will be no spending on an outfielder who's actually good now, like Gurriel.

I also don't like the assessment that TO's a former "Gold Glove LF who can play CF and RF." Sounds too much like Duvall, another injury-prone righty power bat.

Duvall was not the answer in CF, Duran isn't either (and good luck, Yankees, neither are Verdugo or Judge). Yet speculation by the Globe's Julian McWilliams is Duran would play LF "if he isn't traded", with O'Neill in CF...

Then again, word from the brass is they prefer Yoshida play offense and defense, so don't mark him down as the new DH just yet. There has to be at least one more move for this outfield...

In Summary, the Sox got a marginal offensive right hand hitting outfielder with a good glove and gave up a better hitting , but less power, left hand hitting outfielder with a good glove but some difficulties with management. The Sox got pitching prospects and gave up pitching prospects. Did the Sox get better pitching prospects? That remains to be seen.

It looks to me that these were sensible trades for the Sox but not ones that will make a significant difference in our 2024 win/loss record. Breslow has to do better and let's hope he will.

If they don't land a premier starting pitcher or two, this offseason is going to be another resounding failure, no matter what else they do.

I'm sure Brez wants badly to get us that SP or two.

I've expressed my doubts that they will land Moto, because it looks like the only way to do so is to be the craziest guy in the room, which isn't really Henry's style.

Agree, and the Red Sox are not going to outbid the Mets for anyone. So far I’m not impressed at all with Dugy going to the Yankees, or getting TO from the Cardinals.

Henry may not be loudly insane -- like the Ghost of trade proposals past, or the pandemic poster who called Agent Orange "the greatest president in the history of this country!"

But JH has been known to simmer before impulsively erupting into action -- like driving to WEEI to voice a stance, or flipping his wallet at his CBO to sign Raffy, after deciding two better all-around homegrown stars were not worth keeping at market values...

Posted
You can't help thinking that when Cohen met with Moto one of the things he said was something like this: "Whatever offer you get from another team, bring it to me and I'll beat it."
Posted

The teams that lose out in the Moto bidding will likely turn their attention to Snell. Then Montgomery.

This may not have been the best offseason to be desperate for an elite starter.

The Sox brain trust probably should have given that some thought before this.

Sounds right to me. (You left out the part about continuously signing those with pending legal issues or who some call "clubhouse cancers" because, you know, you get good value with guys like that.)

Didn’t realize people had strong opinions about Tyler O’Neill.

He's a POS. I heard it from my cousin who's friend adopted their dog from their neighbor's kid's cousin. No way the dog is wrong.

Well, it is kind of funny that they traded Verdugo and then traded for this guy, who had the same kind of issues with his manager as Dugo did, plus does look a lot like a roider. :P

I agree.

The totality of moves made, so far, look okay and probably reflect the new GMs take on who needed to go, maybe more than who we got back. The O’Neill signing is his first significant signing.

There are still a few FA pitchers that can be big helps, and I sense at least one big trade is going to happen, so if we add two new SPrrs, additions like O’Neill will not be an issue.

They wanted a RHB. O’Neill’s issues aren’t 1:1 with Verdugo’s. The prospects the Sox got back are better too. Is Duran a roider?

No idea about Duran, but he definitely looked much more jacked in 2023, so maybe he is. I'm feeling cynical enough not to dismiss it.

The move is whatever, but to see some people so upset is wild.

I'm not upset about O'Neil. It's a minor move in the big picture. I'm just generally frustrated with the state of the Sox and not feeling very confident that this offseason is going to turn out well for us.
