@tylermilliken_

From @jcmccaffrey and @chadjennings22 on the Red Sox search for 2B help:

“According to two people with knowledge of the situation, the Red Sox have considered Whit Merrifield and touched base with his representatives, but talks have been largely preliminary with no current traction toward a deal, though that could change as the market begins to move and the Red Sox settle on a more definitive direction.”

Breslow pointed to the Red Sox looking more at the trade market for help at the winter meetings.

Merrifield is vaguely interesting, but he isn't the great glove 2B they have been talking about acquiring.

I keep going back to Las Vegas and Zack Gelof -- their best player, who has to available on any team that only won 50 games.

Gelof was pretty great in half a rookie season: in 300 PAs he was a 14-14 man (HRs/SBs) and had a plus dWAR.

The Sox could give the Jokers plenty of value that would help in their annual rebuild... BTV matches Houck or Crawford, or a combo of Rafaela and Schreiber, or Wink and Yorke. Why not.

2Bmen mentioned as possible trade targets:

Kim from SD, who will be costly.

Polanco from MN, who has MI depth.

Kim from SD, I think you mean.

India’s name will get bandied about as well. I don’t like the defensive fit, but I wouldn’t say it’s impossible…

Yes, SD. I fixed it.

I'd rather have Urias/Reyes/EValdez than India.

Why would they trade a pre-Arb guy that is actually productive?

One of the worst fielder's in the game.

Teel for India...lmao!

I wouldn't give up Paulino.

I'd trade Paulino for India, but I think India is a 3B and we already have one.

You’re making an argument for how he actually is a fit for the Boston infield…

They’re not trading Gelof just because the rest of the team sucks. That they have already bowed out on trading Blackburn should indicate not everyone is available…

I don’t think Cincinnati makes that deal. India is actually still fairly decent. He won’t get them a top prospect like Teel, but he will get them more than Paulino.

Reportedly they want pitching for him. It will be mediocre pitching at best…

I would not give Wikelman, Monegro or Perales for him.

I would probably give Walter, Mata and Hoppe.

Regardless, I don't think there's a fit for him here.

Player A: 119 G, .746 OPS, 100 OPS+, -7 DRS

Player B: 49 G, .764 OPS, 103 OPS+, -6 DRS

Player A is Jonathan India, player B is a 2B already on the Red Sox roster.

Player C is on the Sox, too:

64 G .716 OPS, 94 OPS+, -5 DRS

Player C is Pablo Reyes.

Why not, if they can get two pre-Arb guys who are highly rated by the genius Boston Red Sox?

Shouldn't a 50-win team try to stockpile as much talent as they possibly can before they move to another desert?

DRS is a counting stat. If you extrapolated Player be to 119 Games: -14.5 DRS.

They would wait until Gelof's ARB years are over before dealing him. They will start potentially playing in the Vegas AAA stadium in '25 so it would make sense for them to have a high profile player to showcase.

Sure, but I'm getting at is that we already have a defensively challenged second baseman with a league average bat.

Maybe, but their front office has to be looking for any way to improve; it's not all about money -- gotta give up something good to get a good return. Plus, they might not view Gelof as the high profile guy (drafted 20 picks after Bloom chose Jud Fabian at #40... who refused to sign, then went #67 the next year to the O's).

I doubt they value his draft status over his MLB play.

If the A’s want to give up something good, Seth Brown, Paul Blackburn, Sean Newcomb are all more likely to move before Gelof…

Neither do I. He’s just the only experienced 2b getting buzz…

Filling the 2B position gives us a big chance to improve the D and the O. It's the one non pitching position I think we need to use the needed resources to fill correctly.

It seems Brez is looking at trading for a 2Bman. I don't think India is an improvement. Our 2Bmen hit .748 in 2023, but were the worst or near worst on D in most meaningful metrics.
