You want a pitcher that you would call a #1 and #2 starter.

Again, Texas won 68 games in 2022 - 10 fewer than Boston.

Their best pitchers were Martin Perez and Jon Gray. They went out and added a clear #1 in deGrom, a borderline #2 in Eovaldi, and Andrew Heaney, a pitcher no one addicted to handing out those #1through #5 labels would assign one to.

And don’t argue Eovaldi is a clear #2 while saying Chris Sale doesn’t count.

Just because you think a pitcher does not net some role on the team doesn’t mean he can’t and won’t help…

All sounds good in theory, and everybody has one. The one thing we would all agree on is that we need 10-12 more wins from somewhere.

As for the Rangers' huge improvement, it happens, of course, but the probabilities of it occurring are not high.

Don't forget Montgomery and Scherzer at the deadline... point being, the champs were never afraid of adding expensive starting pitching. All year.

Meanwhile, interesting article on MLB.com today regarding teams' glaring needs. The first mentioned for Boston? CATCHING.

... the list is based on Fangraphs' projected WAR by position. The Red Sox catchers are rated 28th, with this note, "No team had a higher strikeout rate from its catchers than Boston in 2023, and none of the Red Sox backstops rated as a positive defender" (latter determined by FG's Fielding Run Value).

Maybe Maldonado isn't just a Cora binky, after all.

Well we don’t really know how Breslow feels about that.

Let’s get through the off-season first. If the Sox are still in it at the deadline, hopefully Breslow won’t Bloom out on us…

And fun thing about the Rangers’ pitching. Despite all the big names, rising stars and reclamation projects they added, without looking it up, can anyone tell me who lead that team in IP?

Jon Gray?

Martin Perez?

for a DH and SP coming off his 2nd TJ and can't pitch till 2025. I want his agent

He will draw fans and viewers, but Holy Sweet Jesus!

I thought $500M/12 was too much.

I did not want the Sox offering any more than $280M/12. He nearly tripled that!

$700m/10 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just a ridiculous contract. I don’t care if he hits, and can still pitch that wouldn’t mean to me that he gets twice the money. Now for the next ridiculous contract wait on how much the Yam Man will get. No thanks!

The Dodgers already draw fans, and people in LA have already seen him many times over now.

The price of the rest of the big name free agents just jumped a hundred million apiece (according to agents with visions of sugar plums dancing in their heads)...

Sox better jump on Lugo while they can afford him, because all the elite starting pitchers that were waiting on Ohtani are being now fitted for pinstripes -- black and blue.

True, but my guess is they see a spike in attendance, cable subscriptions and Ohtani Dodger jerseys.

That contract is wild.

Somewhere out there, Juan Soto’s agent just said “Yeah, let’s table that extension talk.”

you think Dodgers fans are pissed about the organization spending $70M for Ohtani? hell no they aren't, they're the most excited fans in all of sports right now. and we're hoping JH will spend enough to get a 3rd tier pitcher. LOLOL. if Henry wants to spend like he's broke and doesn't care about winning, maybe he should buy the Pirates and sell the team to someone that gives a damn.

How many potential owners are out there that will spend significantly more than JH?

Next question, JH will not sell to the guy who will spend tge most on the budget. He will sell to he one who pays him the most.

Be careful what you wish for.

This much is now true - the chances of any team signing Yamamoto for his $225mill projection are roughly the same as your chances of knocking the sun out of the sky by throwing rocks at it…

Oh I'm sure they are outraged: HOW DARE YOU sell our future for this flash in the pan? We could have spent that money developing the farm. Getting relievers. Signing .230 hitting roiders. Finding "value". Guaranteed none of the savvy posters wannabe GMs on this board would have gone for that signing.

He's not worth half that. That $700M could get us Yamamoto, Snell and Monty.

Yankees, Mets, giants, Toronto, angels, Texas, etc etc etc

Not enough quality free agents for all the teams in need

I'm not saying we'll do it, but that $700M would be better spent on 3 pitchers than just Ohtani, so yes, I'd complain if we spent $700M on one guy.

3-4 good ones are available via trade.

There is enough for all to get one.

Rather be a savvy wannabe GM than a make-believe doctor that specializes in PEDs and being judgmental…
