The bigger deal with Bauer is that he hasn’t pitched in MLB since 2021. Yes, he’sa PR nightmare that teams have been avoiding. But we also don’t know how he pitches any more as well.

Maybe MLB. teams actually aren’t avoiding the controversy; maybe he just isn’t as good any more…

at this point I'd at least give him the minimum or a M/L invite.

If Sox had any intention of being competitive, it would be a conversation. Since they are going to be well out of it apparently, it's probably just not worth the additional PR headache for them.

He might provide some choice moments for the Netflix doc!

They said they won't make player decisions based on Netflix! ;)

Strong disagree.

The whole idea of not trying to compete is already a MASSIVE public relations nightmare on its own. Why not make it even better next year by 1) trying to compete while 2) jettisoning Bauer at the same time?

Now THAT could get some positive press!! It’s all about the opportunity…

They have to say that. Assuming they’re keeping up the front of running a baseball team.

But if they’re invested in this documentary, they obviously have some priority somewhere on some list to make it as entertaining as possible so as to get a sequel next year…

It might take Bauer a year to readjust to the culture here.

I don’t think Bauer was ever really all that adjusted to the culture here. That’s why he got into trouble in the first place…

The Red Sox are very image conscious and will not go near Bauer. In the meantime, they don’t have a clue why their fanbase has been losing interest at an alarming rate.

If they’re image-conscious, why are they eagerly pursuing some sort of Ebenezer Scrooge persona this off-season?

We should be going after players like Blake Snell and Cody Bellinger. We have a team of nobody's. It's obvious we have no intentions on even trying to win.

Exactly. Their "image" is tanking, by the minute.

There would be some push back after a Bauer signing, but at least many would feel like they are at least trying to win, within the confines of the Scrooge budget.

Bauer and Clevinger!! Total cost is $10-12 mill AAV.

Granted they’ll be hated by women and babies…

+1. And if babies and women don’t like it, they can continue to stay away from Fenway

To be honest it should NOT be a PR headache as the guy was never charged or found guilty. This is supposed to be a country where you are innocent till PROVEN guilty. i would hate to see a false accusation derail a guy's career. Having said that the guy actually is a jerk. I remember watching once when Tito came to pull him he turned and fired the ball into the CF bleachers -hardly a team guy.

Still the guy is a good pitcher who I think COULD prove to be better than Jordan Montgomery as I see his ceiiing as being higher and he won't cost NEAR as much. There are several on here that feel that if we were to sign Montgomery we could be contenders. I don't agree with that but really what's the harm in bringing in Bauer on a miniminun or a M/L deal? It certainly won't break the bank to do so and COULD be the steal of the offseason. I mean wow already have the juicer. TB could keep him company.

He wasn’t punished for his activities, and therefore was never proven to be at fault. (He was never charged with any crimes, so he couldn’t have been found guilty.)

But the reality remains - he is aPR nightmare. I mean, OJ was acquitted, too. Has it helped his public image?

All that said, I wonder why the Sox are actually concerned with their image right now. They’ve turned off so many fans, Bauer could win a second Cy Young and half of New England might not notice…

Not like women and babies are such big fans of Joe Jacques…

i'd sign him in a second. he already knows he's going to be under the microscope and should be on his absolute best behavior. i would include a morality/behavior/whatever clause that would let the Sox off the hook for his salary for even the slightest indiscretion. Sox won't do it, though because they're worried about their image to a dying fan base.

Dude, he is 'not guilty', i.e., 'not proven to be guilty in a courtroom.' Does that mean he, McGuire, Tommy Pham, etc. are the guys you want your kids to idolize? Are those the guys whose athletic careers you want to follow and whom you want to cheer for?

Tommy Pham is on the list now? He slapped Joc Pederson!! That’s commendable! Honestly, who doesn’t want to slap Joc Pederson?

The Moral High Ground here apparently has a threshold of Sainthood as the cover charge and it doesn’t get counted towards the minimum.

Heck, Tyler O’Neill has no skeletons in his closet, but that doesn’t stop people from fabricating some…

Also, what exactly did Bauer do to get on the Sinners List? It’s actually very possible he was simply the victim extortion…

that is my point. Initially I would not have signed Bauer because of his "me' attitude but the Sox seem to be counting pennies and Bauer would come very cheap there is no question I would take a flier on him.

But jad, you did also say this a few days ago, with reference to comments suggesting Cora should be barred from the game:

The high moral propriety of posters here, and sports fans in general, always astounds me.

I think a lot of us would take a flier on Bauer. But there's no chance the Red Sox will.

Any guy who admits he has lust in his heart, and swears he saw a UFO, has no skeletons in his closet. But he may have bones in his ashtray (maybe just a roach).

Hey! I SWEAR these allegations are false (well, at least the one about the UFO).

Well, I guess as far as kids' entertainment is concerned, I distinguish 'cheating' (which doesn't really bother me) from things like 'kidnapping teenagers for sex and photographing them' (proven or not), 'masturbating in public', 'S&M sessions with hookers', assaults over fantasy sports. But that's just me.

(I should also add: 'filthy rich CEOs holding their customers in contempt while stealing more money from them')

Yes, that's just you. When I was a kid, if I learned that the World Series had been won by cheating, I would have been traumatized.
