1. Because he's good right now, at a good salary, and could be traded for one or two guys who might be good for a lot longer... even a Trea Turner or Carlos Carrasco -- prospects acquired in trades (notice I didn't mention a Hall of Famer like Jeff Bagwell; nobody would be that dumb);

2. He took a really long time to recover from injury;

3. And now that he's older, other physical issues are already surfacing...

To me, Paxton is a no-brainer move. If Bloom tries the “buy and sell” maneuver again, he should be buying with 2024 in mind…

Sell high, buy low theory comes to mind.

The Globe just had an article about why the Sox should trade Paxton.

I didn't really notice Paxton's knee causing much of an issue last night. I'll say what I've been saying right along, with all of their current issues, giving away a guy who can actually pitch is ridiculous unless someone comes along who has a no brainer offer. To date, the trades and moves made lately have been nothing but gambles and fillers.

"since he drafts almost only HS players", does that mean we're supposed to give Bloom a pass for the next 5, 6, 7 years waiting for them to develop? i'm thinking maybe he should be looking at some kids who are a bit closer to being ready.

No free pass- just context. My point was more about posters expecting to have already seen significant farm help from Bloom’s prospects.

Yes, We should see players close to ready, but maybe not HS draftees.

Did you expect more for Hembree, Workman and 2 months of Vazquez?

The Sox are unlikely to make the postseason and probably should go too deep into pursuing the 34yo and oft-injured Paxton for next year. Trading him now while he’s still actually worth something is the smart option, and 2 months of Paxton isn’t going to get anything more than a gamble or role player.

I imagine the Sox should hold Paxton until all of the Snell’s and Giolito’s of the world have changed uniforms and he’s the Best Arm Available…

Giving up something for nothing is a joke. I of course am always entertained by your opinions, you ought to try not being so condescendingly critical in your attempts to prove that your Opinions are right ...

If you truly decide to be sellers, Paxton is exactly the type of player you sell.

Really all they have to sell. The rest of the pending FA types are not going to be hot commodities. Duvall or Hernandez might get you something, but probably nothing memorable…

Even if they’ve not as good?

i'm not against drafting a HS kid, especially if he has a really high upside, but i do think HS kids are a bigger crapshoot than college kids. do you think we should give Bloom a pass the next 5-7 years no matter what to see if his HS kids might work out?

You don’t have to give him an overall pass, but give credit where it’s due…

Where is the "free pass" being given, and by whom?

You can always count on Kike at short in a middle of cluster f***.

How about that attempted pickoff play at second base. I'm not sure at what level of baseball you might expect to see that done but certainly not at this one. I do kind of wonder at times who is actually coaching these guys.

A lot of folks complain regularly that so far Bloom has achieved nothing. I disagree because I thought the 2021 team, a throw-together outfit, did pretty well getting to the ALCS.

Nevertheless, here is what he has assembled so far, which we could see as early as this September or, more likely, in April

DH Yoshida/Turner

C Wong/McGuire

1B Casas/Turner

2B Story/Chang

3B Devers/Turner

SS Mayer/Story/Chang

LF Yoshida/Duvall/Refsnyder/Duran

CF Duran/Duvall/Refsnyder

RF Verdugo/Duvall/Refsnyder

Starting pitchers: Paxton/Bello/Crawford/Houck/Whitlock/Sale(signed by DD at a huge cost)

Bullpen: assorted with Jansen being the priciest at 2 x $16M

Alternatively, forget all those names except two: Story and Mayer. We could see them in September, but more likely, if Mayer continues to progress, in April. That's a pretty doggone good middle infield at bat and in the field.

Not really sure what your exact thesis is, but Bello, Crawford, Duran and Houck were inherited from DD.

Story and Mayer are *hopefully* pretty doggone good.

It's not just drafting or signing MiLB talent, you gotta develop it, which is just as important and just as hard.

I agree. But usually here we're all about what the head of ops was left with, and what he was stuck with.

I am really curious about that play. Who initiated it?

I doubt it was the pitcher. So was it Hamilton or Kike?

Dumbest play with 3-2 count WITH runner on 3rd

Scorer really gave hit on Kike's dropped ball?

The inning would have been over on next groundball had Keike made that catch.

Unreal. Grading on curve much?

Casas, too.

maybe he meant Bloom did not trade them away.

I knew I was leaving one out. I'm slipping, man. First Chris "Smith" and now this. ;)

Maybe when it comes to Kike at shortstop, even the scorer has lowered his/her expectations…

I think you were just confusing former Sox LHP Chris Smith, current Sox RHP Chris Martin, and character actor Charles Martin Smith.

Happens to everyone…

Definitely an error on Kike. That play could have been called by the catcher or either middle infielder. If it was called from the dugout, we have a lot more problems with player development than anyone needs.

It would be interesting to know how many runs we have let up on these “non error” plays, this year
