Who cares? He was only here for one more here. He's due to be injured at some point. Grissom has the potential to be a long term solution. Sale does not.

Sale had ample opportunities to show us what he can do over the last 4 years, and he was just never able to get out there and do it. Had he stayed and gotten injured again, which would have surprised no one, he would have walked away at the end of the season, looking for whatever deal he could get.

He gave the Sox a few great seasons, but those are in the rearview mirror and no one expected him to be that pitcher again. Atlanta was in a better position to give him a chance, because if he did get injured they have more MLB-ready pitchers who can step in for him. He was either going to stay healthy and give them a good season or, at a minimum, lessen the workload for Bryce Elder or AJ Smith-Shawver or Hurston Waldrep or whoever else was stepping up for their AAA squad. Boston simply did not have the depth behind him necessary to take the risk of putting him back on the mound.

This was a very smart deal for both teams...

Fernandez has a higher k rate and lower xFIP than Slaten.

I was on the short list of Fernandez supporters, but I am ok with Slaten taking his role for now. As for who will be better long term? Completely unknown...

Agreed. Braves were expected to be a playoff team and needed to roll the dice on another starter. The Sox were on the outside looking in and probably needed a long term solution in the IF. ATL had the prospect that was blocked. Sox had room under the CBT to deal. Win/win.

Hard to say. I saw both at the same ST game. Fernandez still has great stuff. His issue has always been health. If he beats that problem, maybe there's a good conversation to be had.

Sox DFA Pablo Reyes.

Interesting in that they could have demoted Hamilton or Dalbec. Cooper and Grissom are both already on the 40 man roster. And they still had an open slot on that from their DFA of Joely Rodriguez.

So now the 40 man roster stands at 38 players.

They do need to demote one more player. IMO, most likely options are now, in order, Valdez, Hamilton and then Dalbec...

Come on, Sale was only MIA in Boston for HALF A DECADE

The difference with Mondesi -- I mean Paxton -- I mean Fulmer -- I mean Hendriks -- I mean GRISSOM... is that they were Red Sox a long time before Red Sox fans ever (if ever) saw them in Boston uniforms.

don't forget about Trevor Story? he's going to have 145 games played in FOUR years going into next season. i'd say Trevor is the Chris Sale of infielders.

What the f***? I can see keeping Dalbec, but Hamilton? Valdez is kinda useless on the roster too. He's a LH DH and they already have Masa. Weird as Hell IMO. I'm not a huge Reyes guy, but I'd keep him over Hamilton. Wonder if they are adding someone not in the org or just leaving room for a WOO transaction?

Story's first couple of years were the Sox taking a risk and getting burned. This year, I feel for the guy who just got another injury unrelated to his previous issues. He's only 31, but he does fall into the catoegory of "can we rely on this guy?"

Just like Sale...

They must have plans on adding a player or two.

Maybe it was all about the 9 infielder thingy.

He's just the 2B while they work on the Xander extension. Nothing to worry about. Smart move to get him late in Spring Training even though he suffered through an injury all last year with the Rockies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hamilton and Valdez aren't IFers!

No idea.

With Grissom coming back and Valdez having an option left, I will be surprised if Enmanuel is not demoted to Worcester.

But the Sox could have simply demoted Hamilton and kept Reyes around as the utility infielder. He doesn't excel in any aspect of the game, but he is better at Hamilton than everything except baserunning.

Maybe Cora wants Hamilton around to be the occasional ghost runner?

Maybe someone from outside the system will be added.

Maybe Westbrook or Meidroth?

Maybe we add a pitcher to the 40: Benitez, Guerrero, Fitts or Gambrell?

Cutthroats -- they burn out his arm closing a shutout the other night, then discard him like any ol belt-breaking Pablo.

Grissom takes his place as the righty platoon partner of Valdez -- until Vaughn starts hitting like Mo.

Dalbec is a better third baseman than Reyes' 4 Es in 10 games there, but will be replaced by Cooper -- and I don't mean Cecil (30 WAR in his first seven years after Boston gave him to Milwaukee).

Hamilton stays as a crappy back-up infielder but fast pinch-runner for whoever's knees are aching this week.

On this team, they are.

Now, they are not GOOD infielders anywhere...

Given how they keep bumping relievers into the rotation, maybe they could have kept Reyes for the bullpen ;)

They need someone to back up SS. Westbrook has only 9 IP of pro ball there. Meidroth is not a SS, just 2b/3b.

@LouMerloni

Grissom is coming too. They need a guy that can Play SS and hit LHH. Alvarez or Sogard. Pick one

Eddy Alvarez will also come in handy if MLB ever decides to change from the ghost runner rule and replace extra innings with speed-skating races...

Good point. I doubt they use Grissom at SS.

Maybe Sogard or Alvarez?

Very likely IMO as it would speed the game up.

Sogard wouldn't be added until this offseason when he'll be Rule 5 eligible and they need to maintain CONTROL over him.

Gotta go with Eddie Alvarez -- he could become clubhouse DJ.

Stay away from Sogard -- if he becomes a fan favorite, they'll never get rid of that song: "Sogard- Sogard- Sogard!"

It’s amazing that Brez could find a 1B out there while Bloom couldn’t outside of Franchy Strange Glove. Moon went on, and on two years ago that player’s couldn’t be acquired this time of year, but being a Bloom guy like he was it’s NO surprise at all, and once again wrong.🤭🙈🤮!

Bobby D riding a 5 game hitting streak.

I doubt December's Rule 5 eligibility will come into play, if we choose to add a player or two to our 40 man roster from within our system, but here are some ML ready or near MLB-ready players on our farm, who are Rule 5 eligible, this December:

Jordan & Kavadas (DFA Dalbec?)

Yorke and Paulino

Fitts & Gambrell

MLB.com reports that...

Pivetta will get a rehab start- likely Thursday

Romy is taking batting practice.

Whitlock is only throwing on flat ground.

Whitlock has been playing catch “but he still feels it….So no mound progression for him.”

We are on pace for 89 wins and missing the playoffs by 3 games (to DET's projected 92 wins.)

Being on pace to win any amount of games means absolutely nothing at this point. They were on pace to win more games last year too, and how did that work out?🤭🙈🤫
