Grissom apparently is done with his Worcester rehab/spring training and will be up with the big club tomorrow. Cooper should also be added to the active roster, so two moves coming.

Finally, we get to see who this guy can be.

Chris Martin:

2023 K/9: 8.1

2024 K/9: 9.5

2023 BB/9: 1.4

2024 BB/9: 1.6

2023 FB Velcoity: 95.7

2024 FB Velocity: 94.9

2023 Whiff Rate: 23.3%

2024 Whiff Rate: 31.3%

2023 BABIP: .301

2024 BABIP: .406

This season is setting up a lot like 2022 for him. Rough start, strong finish IMO.

Somebody has to say it: Slaten seems to have a good chance of supplanting Martin as the 8th inning guy.

You think Slaten's 154 BABIP is likely to hold up? 0.55 ERA and 3.35 xFIP

He doesn't give up hard contact, doesn't walk anybody and doesn't throw a 4 seamer. That's a Breslow guy all day.

Exactly, and just because Joely got lit up a few times, too many, does not mean the theory behind these types of choices was/is wrong.

Depend on how many more starters go down. He's already got the stuff and length to be an opener, and then could get stretched out in one inning increments: three IP, four IP, five... golden rings...

More likely, Uwasawa is the next Criswell, and Slaten sets up Hendriks in the second half.

It might take a while to see what he can be.

Yes. "We can begin to see..." might have been a better choice of wording.

Meanwhile, the Sox are paying a big part of Sale's salary while he has made 5 starts, 31 IP, and ERA 3.69 for the Braves. Have I got that right? Grissom for Sale, with the Sox paying Sale to pitch for Atlanta?

Yes, they are paying some of Sale's contract to pitch for ATL, and in return we got a recently graduated top 3 prospect from the ATL system- a guy with 6 years of team control.

The final judging of this trade has a long way to go.

Or: It has taken a while to see what he looks like.

29 games seems like nothing, compared to many other injured Sox players.

Have we forgotten how many games Sale missed?

Come on, Sale was only MIA in Boston for HALF A DECADE

The difference with Mondesi -- I mean Paxton -- I mean Fulmer -- I mean Hendriks -- I mean GRISSOM... is that they were Red Sox a long time before Red Sox fans ever (if ever) saw them in Boston uniforms.

Oh, no one has said that yet?

Well I’m certain a lot of us are thinking it.

Sox have been nailing rule 5’s lately.

Wade Miller questions his omission...

Please no.

Someone needs to stay in the bullpen. Bullpens are important...

Ryan Fernandez is off to a good start in St. Louis for his first 11 IP. Thad Ward is getting hit hard on the Nationals' AAA team.

I'd gladly take Whitlock and Slaten over Ward and Fernandez...

My son has a Topps card of Collin McHugh in a Red Sox cap. Gonna assume the photo is airbrushed (not hairbrushed).

Well he was technically on the 2020 Red Sox. Pitched about as well as Sale did that year, too...

According to spotrac, the Sox are paying Sale $17M this year. That's more than the total salaries, $14M, of the Sox original rotation--Bello, Pivetta, Crawford, Whitlock, and Houck--this season.

I have no doubt the Sox have 6 years of team control, but effectively right now they are paying Grissom $17M. Wasn't he selected in the 11th round? I know he looked very good at AAA last year.

True. But starters can eat innings. Last year Pivetta started as a starter and went to the bullpen before finally returning as a starter. Crawford, Houck, and Whitlock all came from the Sox bullpen.

I do not have any good response to your point. In fact, I think you have nailed a key point about MLB managing.

Uwasawa was hit hard in AAA and pitched like a little leaguer in Spring Training. He'll most likely look more like a Bloom replacement.

Who cares? He was only here for one more here. He's due to be injured at some point. Grissom has the potential to be a long term solution. Sale does not.

He will have missed one month. Not the end of the world considering what has happened to the rest of the squad.

A half a decade was about how long Sale spent on the IL here.

Fernandez has a higher k rate and lower xFIP than Slaten.

No, they aren't.

Short-sighted.

This was about 6 years and a very hopeful shot at solving the 2B issue we have had for far too long.

Spread that $17M over 6 years and add Grissom's arb costs, and the money might look like a win.

Is when he was drafted more important than his ranking in their system?
