Well, Bailey is having them throw a lot more off speed pitches. Isn't doing that more prone to injuries?

No.

Occam's Razor would suggest that there might be a connection between the pitch clock and the rash of pitching injuries. It's at least worth looking into.

No, pitching injuries have been higher in recent year without the pitching clock. There is no discernable connection.

That's not what I'm seeing. Has there ever been more pitching injuries than we are seeing lately ? I don't think so.

I don't claim to know the reason for the pitching injuries. I just think the pitch clock should be looked into. In any kind of strenuous physical activity , a certain amount of recovery time is needed.

I heard one journalist say 2014 and 2015 were worse…

Your eyes are deceiving you. The Sox are having a bad go of it, but across the league, other years have been worse for injuries.

So we are down to Kutter and Houck as starters not having missed a turn.

Also none on injured reserve has returned. Ugh.

I saw it on some MLB Network show…

From what I've gathered, a large contributing factor into pitchers getting injured more often is everyone is throwing harder. There seems to be an argument for contributing factors, but it seems obvious to me that pitchers throwing harder is a large driving force. They have all these guys in specialized labs now, coming out with better stuff and throwing harder, but the downside is injury.

You can almost assume at this point, that every MLB is going to have some kind of major surgery at some point in their career.

Hey, maybe the Sox will be healthy at the end of the year and the rest of the teams will be dealing with a rash of injuries.....or not.

Here's Greg Maddux take on power pitchers:

In a recent phone interview, Maddux, whose expertise on the mound is revered, shared his insights into the high-stakes environment that pitchers face today. “Velocity matters,” Maddux explained, “teams want guys who throw hard.

As a coach, I’d rather have someone who can throw 95 mph rather than 90. Faster is better, but it’s not the solution to your problems”.

My interpretation of what GM said is that location is more important than speed. When that's combined with the added stress of the additional 5 MPH a pitcher throwing has hard as he can is a lose/lose situation. JMO!

Is it time to dust off Rich Hill yet? Ninth time is a charm

No. Little League has another month... then there's another month for All-Stars... Hill has said he won't be available until mid-summer -- unless his kid's team gets to Williamsport and goes far; that can take the winners all the way up until school re-starts (the Sox could even be out of it, by then).

Good stuff.

I also think GMs, managers and pitching coaches are looking at spin rates as well as velocity.

Just watching Pivetta and Crawford pitch, it just looks like the ball is breaking way more than in the past. Just my take.

Can Hill’s kid pitch? We can sign them as a set. Also, no way Hill has a kid in Little League. Surely his kid is 30 by now…

Does anyone know how starting pitchers get hurt between starts?

Working out?

Warming up?

Fall at home?

I have no clue.

Just happy to see Abreu thriving in right field.

Verdugo in his 6th year is making $8.7M.

We have Abreu for six years.

I will say it. He will be in discussion for Rookie of the Year.

Kelly's outing last night was encouraging.

Our pitching has been scary good. I just hope the bottom doesn't fall out.

Max effort is causing injuries, but they aren't at an all time high as some suggest. I definitely believe the velo/effort issue is a bigger concern than the pitch clock.

Anytime a pitcher throws a ball, there's a chance of injury. These guys work out and throw in between starts.

I think not only velocity, but how early some pitchers start throwing hard. A 98-100mph fastball in high school isn’t necessary to get hitters out, but it can translate quickly into big money as either a signing bonus or a scholarship. That’s way too much of a temptation for some young pitchers…

The premise that the injury epidemic started around 2014 seems to be based on TJ surgery stats. But what about all the injuries that don't lead to TJ surgery? Maybe this needs a more detailed examination.

He has struggled with bb rate at times and had a 8.0 bb/9 in AAA this year. Something to watch out for.
