Romy Gonzalez is the corresponding move for Bobby Dalbec being optioned, per @EdHand89 and @ChrisHenrique.

Seems fair for a guy who has never hit MLB pitching.

this is all about locking up our young players the team has faith in at a reasonable cost. too bad we didn't do this with Mookie and Xander just to name 2

The Red Sox won't admit it, but this is kind of their way to admit they've learned their lessons.

Back in the day, Boston chose to use up all the minimum wage service time on its young players, while splurging big money on top free agent talent.

Now it looks like the Sox will be working in reverse... except the plan might just be to lock up youth at a discount, and haha -- never spend big on anyone ever again.

That makes sense…

8 years for Rafaela is perfect. I think it takes him to age 31-32.

At worst, he'd be a fine 4th or 5th OF'er/late inning defensive replacement OF'er.

IMO, he will figure it out and be a decent hitter, who can also steal some bases.

Mookie was never, ever going to be a bargain. I think the Sox got Bogey's best years, but there can be no question--20-20 hindsight--keeping him was a better idea than bringing in Trevor Story, who's a better fielder, a worse hitter, and mostly on the IL.

Dalbec optioned.

No corresponding promotion announced. Romy?

Why did the Sox believe Dalbec was going to suddenly hit ML pitching?

They probably didn't. They just wanted him as filler while Refsnyder was out.

A 5th OFer at 6AAV is too much $$$!

Locking him up for that length of time at that dollar amount is going to turn into a steal for the Sox, I think.

Very happy with that contract.

I agree, because I think he will end up hitting well enough to be a solid FT CF'er. He may even end up being a plus on O.

Rafaela adjusted to pitching at every level and was an all-around star in the minors; if those aren't the kinds of players teams should invest in longterm, then who is?

The next steps may be to extend pitchers like Houck and Crawford.

Then don't surprised, if one of the Big Three in Portland really rakes this summer, if the Sox even give someone the Jackson Chourio treatment (locking up a guy before he even makes the bigs).

It's all part of the plan, which really isn't a new 5-year plan, since Bloom extended Whitlock after his Rule V season in 2021. Maybe Slaten will be next?

Houck? No. Crawford? Maybe.

He's making weaker contact in the bigs because MLB pitchers are exploiting his impatience. He's been bad at nearly every hitting metric since being called up.

Send all metrics to Red Sox, care of Analytics, 1313 Mockingplan Lane, Boston, Mass.; "Attention: Accounts Payable Dept -- stop disbursements immediately"

If he fails to hit, what is his floor? A better fielding Kike Hernandez? Kike got a $4mill AAV this year...

I think he ends up figuring it out enough to be a net plus, overall. It may take a while to become a plus on O, and he may never get there, like JBJ did for a 2-3 year stretch and hot spots, here and there.

He may be a net plus at just a .650 OPS, career, but I think he can get to .700 or more.
