@alexspeier

Abreu says an MRI revealed a lot of inflammation in the ankle. He just needs to rest and let the swelling subside. He’s hopeful he won’t need more than 10 days.

Is this Bobby's last chance ? Maybe this time is the charm and he clicks .

I believe he can be sent up and down 3 more times this season. He has to make the Opening Day roster next season for be DFA'd.

His last chance will involve converting to pitching…

The good news is he's seeing a lefty tonight. The bad news is it's Fried.

Dalbec has a .296 OPS vs LHP this year. The Braves could match him up with Charlie Morton using his left arm to pitch and it would probably be effective…

Yes. It was a simple reply to Nick's post. It is pretty much just common sense that you shouldn't add to your bank account while your house falls into disrepair. But Moon has to be disagreeable. " Don't replace the roof every year. " Really ?

There comes a point where replacing the same thing every year gets you to move away, or stop buying shingles made of paper.

It seems JH is happy with paper shingles.

When you look at how our highest paid players have been injured, underperformed, or both in the last 5.3 years, there is some reason to consider on why JH has pulled in the strings on spending large and long.

I'm not defending his choices, but it's not like spending bigly has worked for him.

It worked in 2004. It worked in 2007 (9 out of top 10 salaries came from outside the org). It worked in 2013 (they don't win w/o FA infusion). It worked in 2018 (#1 in payroll).

i don't think the problem is spending bigly, it's spending bigly on THE WRONG PLAYERS.

No doubt. The top FAs we signed, mostly did well or okay. Hardly any were major busts or spent over half their time on the IL.

2018:

31 Price

22 JD

22 HRam did okay in '18

21 Porcello

14 Pedey

13 Kimbrel

13 Sale

11 Betts

9 Pom Pom

7 Bogey

7 Moreland

6 JBJ

4 Nunez

2013

16 Lackey

15 Ortiz (2 yr deal)

13 Dempster (opted out of 2 yr deal)

13 Vic (only did well in '13)

12 Lester

10 Pedey

10 S Drew

9 Jake

7 Hanrahan

6 Buch 16 GS but did great

5 Gomes

5 Napoli

5 Salty

4 Uehara what a steal!

4 Bailey

Look how little RED there is.

That has been my major point, all along, although cuts in spending has not helped matters.

When you try to fix a rotation with $10M/1 guys, the odds they will not do well goes up.

Our highest SP'er signing since Sale & Nate was Gio, and he promptly joined the IL gang.

Who is Nick Pivetta's agent? Nothing on Cot's.

What do we do with him?

Is it too late to extend him?

CAA Sports per B-R.

Offer him 2/32 plus a team option year, something like that?

Nick is entering free agency for the first time where he will be entering his age 32 season.

This might be the only chance he ever really has to get a payday, I'm not saying it can't be done, and he certainly won't command big money......but I can see someone giving him $14-16 million a year for 4 years doubling that contract size.

If he really likes it here, maybe you can work out a 3 year deal with some vesting options for a 4th and 5th year.

Agreed, but if you offer it to him right now it might be too much to resist. Because anything can happen in the next 4 months.

Anything could of happened over the last 6 years.

This is his walk season, he's waited this long to go to FA, I don't think you go this long and then when you're rounding third and heading towards a pay day you take a big paycut to get security. If you're offering him 1/2 of what he may get in free agency it's just an insult on a smaller scale. It's literally Jon Lester on a smaller scale, Sox offered him half of what he got, $30 million might be half or close to half of what Pivetta could get in FA.

I don't know, Pivetta is also a guy who's had a lot of ups and downs, and has been written off on a few occasions. Not really a guy who was on a clear path to a big free agent payday. I don't think 32 million guaranteed would be an insult in his case.

I agree. Like you say, he was never in a position to 'wait' for a big payday. 32/2 plus option seems very reasonable. Going from $7.5M to $16M is a pretty good raise imho.
