Maybe Valdez or Abreu turn into something? IDK. For now, the Diekman deal was a good trade. He should do more of those.

Not sure it’s a good thing if the best trade he made is trading for a backup catcher who jerks off in public

3 teams passed on Mayer, and sooner, or later we’ll find out it that was the right move, or not.

Every team in the MLB passed on Mookie at least 4 times, including Boston.

Groome was moved because he was a wasted 40 man spot. You weren't getting a top prospect for him.

Could they have gotten a better prospect than Abreu or Valdez? Maybe?

I'm not saying a "top prospect." My point was it seem logical we could have gotten 1 better prospect, instead of the 2- or 4 in the Beni case.

Without the SS being on the 1B side of the diamond vs LHBs, it's actually more important to have a wide-ranged 2Bman than before.

Which is exactly why Story should stay at second base.

There is so much ******** floating around that it's hard to keep straight. What I've heard most is that Xander would have taken the Story deal or something slightly more last offseason if offered. Sox only offered the one year extension bit instead.

Certainly, if we could have had Bogey at $160M/6, I'd agree it was a massive mistake by Bloom & Co. I'd also tend to believe JH would have been okay with signing Bogey at slightly above Story's deal, and the mistake would land firmly on Bloom and his minions.

I'm just not sure we can believe any of these "reports." We've heard so many conflicting reports, we know some had to be fabrications by the media or the leaker.

Exactly, and Red was acting like it was a reason to move him off 2B and to SS.

The changing shift rules add more value to 2B range than SS range, although it does help to have a SS with better range, too, but that is true, shift or not.

No, we haven't heard conflicting reports about the 6/160 AT THE TIME thing with Xander. The reports have been very consistent.

Story is not going to be playing in short RF this year, so his range at 2B will not be the same thing this year.

What "conflicting reports" exactly?

His range may go up now that he'll be shifted a little less.

I get the Pirates taking Davis, as he was a division 1 college player closer to MLB and they had Oneil Cruz locking up SS…

How can someone’s range go up when they won’t be playing so deep? How many of those balls that Story got to playing in short RF last year would he have got to if he was playing on the IF dirt. He’ll still be shifted somewhat, but not being able to play as deep is what will take the same range away.

He'll get to the Balls Bogey got to when shifting.

You compare Story to other 2Bman with and without the shift. I'm sure he had better range in both cases.

His "range" was calculated based on balls he got to. The MLB is changing the rules so that players can't be bunched up on one side of the infield anymore. This will mean that he will have the opportunity to go further to get balls than he could previously because players will be spread further apart.

I’m not saying he won’t have range, but just not as much as he would playing in short RF. It’s all moot anyways as Story will be the starting SS.

It’s not just changing the rules so that players aren’t bunched on one side of the field, but not playing out on the OF grass as well.

The rule impacts every player. Story will still get to more balls than most second basemen.

How does he not get to more balls with 3 guys on the right side of the field than when there was 4?

If playing deeper into the OF meant getting to more balls, he'd do it without the shift, too.

Now, with Story at SS playing right on the line vs LHBs, he should get to more balls hit to the rights side than most SSs, so "range" will help there, too, but it seems clear that the 2B position's range becomes way more valuable due to the rule change than SS, RF or 1B.

Baseball is just going back to the way baseball was played on D for the most part for 100+ years, and some are acting like OMG what are we going to do now. The Red Sox have had plenty of 2B who didn’t have the range of Petey, or Story. They would be alright with Arroyo at 2B, which I still believe is the most likely outcome for 2023.

That wasn't the point being discussed, but your diversions are expected.

If no moves are made, I think many agree it's going to be Arroyo at 2B and Story at SS, but that's a different topic.

I can't see Story at SS, Kike at 2B and Refsnyder in CF winning a plurality of votes.

If Arroyo or Ref batted lefty, maybe some sort of complex platoon at CF & 2B could occur with Kike playing CF or 2B depending on a lefty or righty starter, but it just makes more sense for us to add a SS. Trading for one of the 3-4 discussed here won't even cost a top 10 or 20 prospect. Signing Andrus still leaves us way below the tax line.

It makes too much sense, so I'm not surprised you like Story at SS.

I’m not saying I like Story at SS, but like I said weeks ago when many of you were speculating what SS the Red Sox would get I said I’m not so sure they would get anyone, but Story to play there if Bogey didn’t come back.I have said the Red Sox signed Story to play SS, and that’s what I believe, and I said he shouldn’t have been signed if he wasn’t physically able to play SS.

Story is certainly an option, but it appears as though they are exploring keeping him at second…

Is anybody against us signing Andrus or even Iggy or trading a Chris Murphy or the like for a Mateo or maybe even Rojas, or a tiny bit more for A Rosario?

I’d greatly prefer Andrus, since Rojas really only had the one good season and is very one dimensional. But I also think Segura is probably most likely…
