11 years $280 Million

Not surprising. Bloom's fingerprints are all over this. He didn't want Bogaerts back, the Red Sox didn't even make a competitive offer.

I don’t blame Sox management for not matching such a stupid contract ! 11 years WTF. The back end of that contract will likely be awful.

I do blame them for missing the opportunity last off season, which they blew with a comical offer of an additional 30 million on his existing contract.

The Padres offered $280mill over 11 years…

So… where is Bogaerts going to play in San Diego?

They already have 4 shortstops in the infield…

There was rumors they were asking multiple shortstops if they’d consider moving to 1B or 3B.

I’m sure the Red Sox wasn’t even close, and shouldn’t have been with where SD ended up paying, but Bogey was lost when the Red Sox made that insulting offer last offseason, and let him get to FA in the first place. With the money (ding thrown around out there Raffy will be gone too. The Yankees ponied up, and JH will not.

Already reading "if only" stories and posts, like the Red Sox blew it. But let's be clear:

The front office knew exactly what it was doing last spring when Bloom offered Bogaerts less than what Story signed for.

Unlike Mookie, Xander was public with his desire to stay in Boston. And don't say what San Diego paid isn't the current market -- which also includes paying over $100 million dollars to a guy from Japan who has never played a single inning in the MLB.

This is Plan A for the Red Sox.

Wow is all i got. the face of the franchise is gone. That sucks and for all that he gave to this team on and off the field, he will be sorely missed. Best of look to him. A class act who should still be in a Red Sox uniform.

This might be the dumbest contract in sports.X had his warts. He bumped up his D in 22, but he’s been a dog in that area in the past and he’s 30. Not like that’s gonna stay. He also saw an alarming loss of power. Now he goes to SD, where you don’t hit homers due to park factors and they’re paying him til he’s 41 yrs old.

This never made sense for the Sox to do. Sox aren’t in window. They’re about to see their other franchise piece walk and they’re not at the cusp of bringing up a core of talent again. I don’t blame Bloom here. If anything, it makes it pretty clear that Devers is walking and I’d deal him now

Why?

They don’t have any phone numbers for any first baseman? And 3b? The Padres already have a $300mil shortstop playing there!

That team is weird…

It wasn’t even the dumbest contract given out to a 30yo this week…

What Bloom is blamed for is the contract offer he made Bogey last offseason, and letting Bogey get to FA in the first place. San Diego yes is going all out, and way beyond the scope, but they haven’t won anything yet. Let’s not get to exited about Judges contract either, because that may be a bad contract too if not worse. He’s not a better player now, because he hit 60+ last year.

This makes me laugh coming from you. Your team gave a 360 million contract to a guy who's coming off a career year and will never come close to matching last year's numbers that he put up.

Posted
This is the new market. If JH and company want to keep up they will need to pony up big contracts. Turner and Judge took less money do you not think if Bogey had a decent offer from the Sox he would have stayed with the Sox? They probably could have retained him with around 230-240 Mil.

Why didn't they spend some money on pitching instead? They could have had deGrom and Verlander for about the same money.

Or maybe used it for part of an extension for Juan Soto…

$280/11

Who, here, would have done that?

I was thinking that $225/8 was a bit too high. While the extra $55M/3 does not seem too bad, those last 3 years will be at an advanced age and certainly not as a SS.

I can't imagine him staying at SS more than maybe 3 years, especially since the Padres have about 5 SSs- some are better defenders at SS.

I'm at least glad he went to the NL, but I hate seeing him go. Lots of great memories.

I hope Devers doesn't make this a tri-defecta.

The Sox would have retained him for cheaper. I'd like to hear what was the offer they made him

I don’t think anyone thinks the Sox should have matched or topped that insane offer. I think the feeling is of the Sox had started out with a 6-7 year $150-170mill offer, X would still be here…

In theory this makes it more likely they keep Devers.

1) They have more money.

2) San Diego doesn't need a third baseman.

Sure -- last spring. But people really need to stop thinking Bloom "misread" anything about the market.

He's not that incompetent -- or he'd be gone, instead.

I'm not sure anyone thought the market would have exploded like this, but I guess that is part of a GM's job to project value vs the future market. Some GMs locked up key players over the last few years, like the M's & Castillo extension. Did those GMs just get lucky with timing, or where they seeing a massive market uptick coming up and jumped the gun?

If Bloom ruly could have gotten Bogey for $200M/8 a year ago, it's fair to be critical of him, if you think Bogey is worth that, now.

That's fair.

I just thought, all along, the Sox wanted a SS known for defense, too. Just my opinion.

It's, now more than ever, Devers Forevers time!

But they're spending zillions on position players and little on pitchers.

So, about $40M left to spend:

1) Start the Devers extension, this year to lessen the AAV going forward and then sign Andrus and Nate/Kluber?

2) Go for Senga and Andrus (maybe squeeze in Conforto/Gallo)?

3) Go Nate, Andrus, Conforto or Gallo?

4) Go over the tax line?
