Who is even the starting shortstop for their Triple A team? You know, the guy who may have to be promoted to fill in when our MLB shortstop we don't even have goes onto the IL?

According to soxprospects.com, Niko Goodrum. (They have Koss at 3B, but he may be able to fill in at SS for a game or two, if needed.)

Rafaela has been playing OF, but he could be used at SS, if we don't mind rushing him.

I agree, we need a SS, SP and CF/RF.

I've seen Koss at shortstop in Double A; not bad.

Goodrum in 402 career MLB games: negative dWAR. Not good.

Id Goodrum a real drop off from Park and Downs, though?

He does have a career +2.8 UZR/150 and was +5 in DRS from 2020-2021 at SS. (he's -3 career in 1200 innings.)

Bogey is +0.9 UZR/150 career and -50 DRS in 10,390 innings, which is a worse DRS per inning than Goodrum.

His career 85 OPS+ and 68, the last 3 seasons, worries me more than his D.

If it's Rafaela (whose name, at least, seems inevitable to evolve into the next Raffy), ok -- then play him there all year. But what's the point, you may ask, if Mayer is moving up soon? Then we'd need Ceddanne to man CF.

I've seen Rafaela play short and center in person, and he's pretty good at both. Versatility may be overrated by Bloom, though... since we all remember Marwin with the bat or how bad Franchy was anywhere on the field.

That is not how minor league promotions work.

Goodrum is supposedly the AAA shortstop, but as he is not on the 40 man roster, he cannot be promoted…

He is there precisely to be promoted, but only if needed- maybe due to an injury or two. He'd be added to the 40 in a heartbeat, if needed. Someone could be DFA'd or more likely, placed on the 60 day IL (Sale, Paxton, Taylor or the middle IF'er who gets hurt.)

Scratch Rich Hill off the list to replace himself or two other starters missing from the rotation.

He just signed with another last place team. Go Pirates!

Goodbye to our 2022 team leader in pitching fWAR!

BTV accepted:

to BOS: M Rojas (SS 1 yr) & M Taylor (CF 1 yr)

to MIA: Murphy, Dalbec & Duran

to KCR: Leblanc (from MIA) & Feltman

Glove it.

Do this and add Kluber or Nate, and I'd feel a lot better.

Of course, a Devers extension would put the cherry on top, and while I'm at it, sign Fulmer and DFA Brasier and maybe even Bell would think we should be better than 2022.

I don't know, it seems quite possible they never wanted him back and the story about him being a priority was just more of our current front office's ******** stories. Not wanting him back makes more sense, especially considering their joke offer and the Story signing.

The net effect is they leave a lot of fans unhappy, confused or both.

Good times.

I think it's obvious they miscalculated the market, and they seemingly royally messed up the negotiations. I don't think that means they didn't want him back, I think they really did

We can all think what we want, of course. The only evidence we're left with of wanting him back is Bloom's words.

Nailed it. I agree 100%. Kennedy, and Bloom are not that good at acting. Can we get a facial expression expert?

Apparently he likes playing for last place teams like the Sox and Pirates.

We're vrying over Hill? He is not in the core group going forward. I don't care what he did in 2022. He is a coin flip pitche I rather see Mata gain experience than some over the Hill guy pitch.

Bloom is counting on Sale Paxton and Whitlock. At some point he will need to deliver on his promises. I am willing to give him two more years.

I don't think anyone's crying over Hill, but I think we do need another starting pitcher for 2023, regardless of whether they're part of the core group going forward.

I would say this is one of the rare occasions where at least 90% of us are in agreement. We need Kluber or Eovaldi or Greinke or a trade. Bloom basically promised a starting pitcher. He laid it on pretty thick, actually, with the "leadership, upside and innings" stuff.

And reportedly, the Sox don't even have interest in Eovaldi...

No rumors on any of the other possibilities, either, for that matter.

Hopefully Bloom doesn't tell us later that his No. 1 starting pitcher priority was a guy that another team signed, with the reason of course being the price tag was too high. That would fall in line with what happened with the other top priorities of this offseason, Abreu and Bogaerts.

Whatever you think of Bloom, you have to admit that we haven't seen stuff like this from the Red Sox for a long time, if ever. Making it public that they're after certain guys, and falling drastically short with their bids.

The positive signs are the bullpen adds, and Yoshida. But the overall plan is still murky.

Are the Red Sox the undisputed kings of the lowball offer?

Is there any other team in MLB that has had so many lowball offers become public?

But, then there is the reported mega overpay of Yoshida.

Also, we must have outbid others for Jansen, Martin, Turner and Joely.

Did Sox management let it be known on all the cases of "interest in signing" someone, of was it just the media or agents, in some cases?

I do admit, this has become a trend I'm not liking, except when the "interest" was in guys like Heaney and Abreu.

I do question who is calling these the top priority.

The Sox have signed 5 free agents after all…

Stories about any team being interested are clickbait. I’d bet it’s often as little as a two sentence discussion…

I know at some point this is not going to work my more, but it is still December. It would be nice if he brought an SP on board by now, but not essential yet.

Eflin didn’t work out, so Bloom is also not working from what many might look at as the top of the free agent list…

Unless, Bloom has his eye on 2 SP'ers- one an ace or solid #2 and one like Eflin.

And if Kluber and Greinke sign in the next 4 days, it'll still be December, but every free agent pitcher any of us had in mind will be gone.

Eovaldi to the Rangers. Down to Kluber and Greinke.

Why are we counting Greinke?

I'd rather have Wacha or just go with Mata.
