The start of Curtis Mead's career with the Boston Red Sox lasted two plate appearances. Now the question is: How do the Red Sox replace the infielder?

Mead, acquired Saturday in a trade with the Washington Nationals, was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday by the Red Sox with an injured left wrist. Mead told Boston media the wrist is fractured and he will fly to Boston to meet with a hand specialist, who will determine if he needs season-ending surgery. He was hit by a pitch in Monday's game against the A's. Infielder Nick Sogard will be called up from Triple-A Worcester. Due to Boston being in West Sacramento, Sogard is not expected to join the team until Wednesday.

Mead was hit by a 95 mph four-seamer from A's right-hander Jack Perkins leading off the top of the fourth inning. He remained in the game until being replaced defensively to begin the bottom of the fifth inning.

Initial X-rays did not show a break, according to interim manager Chad Tracy, but more testing Tuesday led the Red Sox to make the decision to sideline their new acquisition. Mead was picked up in a one-for-one trade for left-handed starter Connelly Early. Mead has a season slash line of .253/.353/.498 with 17 homers and 48 RBIs, hoping to provide a bit of extra power from the Red Sox's infield.

Anxious to get the accurate story on this incident and its outcome .

Mead had plenty of arm and hand armor on to prevent this but the pitch hit where they aint ( wasn't)

It was noted in the game thread that a broken/chipped bone was likely and Mead would become another Red Sox footnote  needing a resting period to avoid messing up his swing.    Sad turn of events

Let's note that in his short career as a RS, Mead did have a .500 OBP, but a -0- slugging %, -0- BA and a 100% K rate.   Auspicious beginning.     And sure enough , Mead was mentioned as a below par fielder but it was his replacement, Seigler, who butchered a potential game ending DP , making Chapman throw a lot more pitches.

Still need a pro 2Bman, and SS though I like Monasterio's bat recently

Breslow must be the one unluckiest SOB in the league !    Had he not made a deal "early" Mead would not have been out there last night. Had Tracy not juggled the lineup moving Rafaela down to 5th, Mead would have been OK, but Cedanne's Grand Slam would not have happened.

So I will take what happened and the win, but I will never stand near Breslow if a thunderstorm is predicted.

Mid-September.  His acquisition will not help much this season.  Breslow needs to go bal to the drawing board.

I like the optimism, but the Sox final regular season game is September 27, just less than 2 months ( call it 9 weeks) .  The bone healing period will be minimum 6 weeks, and rehab of the idled arm/wrist will be at least 3 more.

At best, Mead could be considered for the playoffs, but very rusty.

He’s not going to help this year. Maybe BresLOW will go out and get someone with a better pedigree now.

All hands on deck.....call up Franklin Arias. How much worse can he do than Durbin?

Well, Early may not pitch this year, also.

I know nothing has changed.  It's still one IL guy for another.  Still bummed.

WHAAAAAAT! He's only 20 years old -- you could ruin him for life! He may not be able to play a kid's game for a job anymore.

Just trade him for Neto. Arias can't possibly be ready for the majors -- he only just hit his 20th home run this season... but all in the minors (ya know, where Neto never hit more than 5 in a season).

It's not even a rumor Meade has been HURT on his 1st day with the Red Sox. It is confirmed news. He broke his wrist and has been put on the IL.

A trade that was already questionable to give away promising 24 year old left handed starter in Connelly Early has been torpedoed with this one injury.

I already questioned this trade at the time it was announced. This does not make it look any better for Breslow who keeps getting bamboozled and mishandling Red Sox talent and assets.

Get him OUT ASAP!

Would you have been happier with Breslow if he traded for Lindor and he got his wrist broken by an HBP instead?

The team is cursed.  We need a big right hand hitter.  We don't have it.

Maybe we need to rethink the RH'd part of a power bat needed.

RHB Contreras leads the team in HRs.

3 of our top 5 HR leaders bat RH'd.

SLG vs L: .441 and SLG vs R: .375

OPS: .780 v L and .680 v R

Mead isn’t the kind of talent this team needs. The deficiencies should have been addressed over the winter.
So yes-I’d fire him

He was about ready to have a couple rehab starts. Was throwing from 120 ft last week. That’s usually the final step before you have live batting practice than a rehab. He’ll probably pitch this year as long as there’s no setbacks.
