Always the brides maid and never the bride. You just knew the Red Sox would come short on the money. Well back to misery again in Beantown. Soto on our team was a pleasant dream that went away quick.

Honestly, I’m glad they came short on that number. It’s a ridiculous amount for a guy who can’t play defense at age 26.

Yeah I don't get the hype for Soto for that kind of money. He's basically a DH. His fielding is suspect and he's not exactly a speedster on the bases. He's a beast at the plate but not enough for that kind of dough. I'd like to see how he hits next year not hitting infront of Judge.

For that money I’m glad we didn’t get him. Even more glad the Yankees didn’t get him either. Their window is closing and still no rings. Problem is, I have no reason to believe that full throttle this year is going to be any different than full throttle last year. If we can land two great SPs I’d be happy.

I really wanted Soto, but $765M/15 is absurd money.

$51M a year.

I'm glad he's on the Mets not the Yanks, but that kinda money might have crippled the Yanks for 15 years.

Now we have the Yanks and Dodgers plus others  to battle with over Fried, Burnes, Teoscar, Bregman, Scott....

There was zero chance of the Red Sox outbidding the Mets and the Yankees.  Zero chance.

The Red Sox had had about the same chance of Soto being in the Red Sox OF in 2025 as they did of having Babe Ruth, and Mookie Betts in it, but yet so Many bought in to the Fairy Tale happening on here hook, line, and Stinker. LMAO all the way home.🤭🙈

IMO Soto to the Mets is great news.  While it would have been "nice" to see him in a Sox uni at the same time the Sox biggest need is not a power hitting OF'er, it's pitching.  Signing Soto for HALF of that money would have crippled any chance the Sox had to sign the pitching necessary to make them a true contender, (OK, that may be a bit of a stretch, but you see what I mean).

My question now is, while Otani's salary was seen as an outlier, does Soto's salary make this the norm for elite players?  If so, any team without very deep pockets may as well fold their tents and slip quietly away,

To me, the Sox couldn't afford both Soto and Devers, so it was an either/or. Just too much money for Soto. Paying for a player at $51 mil per year to age 41 made no sense anyway. I believe in spending money, but doing it wisely. We have the elements of a competitive team provided we spend on pitching and a very good right hand hitter who can hold his own in the field.

On to - and call this a prediction - Bregman, Crochet and Manaea…

I could see that happening, perhaps more than Fried, Crochet & Teoscar/Santander

15 at $700m (our offer apparently) is insane. In that the price is enormous and still not enough to get it done.  I'd have loved him but that contract is absolutely ridiculous. I'd prefer both Mookie and Shohei at either of their deals. And it's not even close.

If we go out and go big on starters and a RH bat, it'll be a good off season.

He did have some good years without Judge.  I suspect at a minimum he’ll have the 156 OPS+ he had in all those years he and Judge weren’t teammates.  Of course he racked those up from ages 19-24, so some improvement shouldn’t be surprising…

Trade Casas for a pitcher and sign Alonso?

Keep Casas and sign Alonso. Eat Masa's contract in a deal. DH Alonso/Casas.

I'm not a huge Alonso guy, but I don't know if he's a huge upgrade from Casas. I'm not sure if Casas brings back more than a #3 and you'd probably have to include other parts.

We dont know yet the degree of the Soto overpay.  If the market for positional / hitting stars doesnt move and just pretends this deal never happened, sure Mets probs wind up regretting it.  But if it does move the market and we start seeing 40m+ as a floor for positional/hitting all stars, this deal wont look as bad for the Mets.

With these big time deals being signed, it makes it less likely that MLB gets a centralized all-in service to provide every game. NESN and friends aren't going to be given up without some MAJOR financial incentive.

Quite possible the Mets re-sign Alonso.

Sox need to focus on guys the Mets aren't interested in. 😛

How many years of control does Casas have remaining?  You are probably right that his value isn’t very high, but we don’t have many high value disposable pieces.
