We see it again and again. Starters don't go deep in games. Every close game comes down to a battle of the bullpens. And it takes a toll. Many teams' bullpens are worn down. They are all looking to add relievers. Last night the Sox bullpen actually managed to be worse than the Yankee's pen. The reverse of Friday night. The Sox don't need another hitter all that much. Pick up a couple of decent relievers to replace some of the jabronis they have been running out there.

This is what I am talking about. The Padres just traded for Jason Adam from the Rays. A good, solid bullpen arm. The Phillies got Estevez. The O's got Dominguez. Where are the Sox? I think Finnegan is available from the Nats. Maybe Fairbanks from the Rays. Do something .

Multiple sources have the Sox linked to Angels RHRP Luis Garcia.

It’s entirely possible these “multiple sources” are quoting each other.

After seeing a team trade what would be the equivalent of one of our top 3-4 prospects for a reliever….i don’t think any big moves are coming.

Padres acquired reliver jason adam from the padres. The padres always makes moves yet haven’t done s*** in terms of making the playoffs.

There are still a lot of good to very good RP'ers out there. Brez better get a few.

The Sox are not gonna do any big deals. That’s what i expect.

Getting good RP'ers are not "big deals." look what others have given up for some, so far. It is not earth-shattering returns.

As as time ticks away the losses pile up. Brez is in the slow lane.

Paxton and Jansen are better than most of Bloom's deadline seasons, and he's not done, yet.

2023: Urias for Blaylock? LOL

(earlier: Kike for Robertson? LOL)

2022: Tommy Pham, McGuire and Hosmer? LOL!

(Abreu and Valdez for Vaz was good, but not as a buyer)

2021 was a good deadline: Schwarber & Robles (later Iggy and T Shaw)

2020 was a sell deadline. (Pivetta)

As we near the deadline at 6pm on July 30th, the list of sure sellers has not really grown. The list of buyers and tire-kickers is probably the longest in MLB history, which could mean the auctions get heated and expensive. So far, it does not seem like teams are giving up the world for some decent players.

The sellers:

CWS:

Crochet (2 arbs remaining) might be the biggest target next to Skubal.

Fedde (1 more year at $7.5M) is aging but a low risk, at that cost.

Roberts Jr. ($15M in '25 w 2 option years at $20M w $2M buyouts) He is a RHB, but we seem set in the OF for many years to come.

DeJong (FA to be) costs only about $600K but may not be an upgrade

OAK

Mason Miller (prearb) just went on the IL. He could replace jansen, next year, but will be very costly and I'm not sure about his status for the rest of '24.

Brent Rooker (3 arbs left) is having a great year and is a RHB. We don't really need a DH, since we have Yoshida and a Ref/Valdez platoon would be fine, too.

MIA

Tanner Scott (FA) is getting a lot of attention

COL

Cal Quantrill & Austin Gomber both have 1 arb year left, but may not be much of an upgrade.

Brenton Doyle (prearb) is a RHB CF'er who might be a nice swap for one of our LHB prospects or Abreu plus prospects.

Ezequiel Tovar (RHB SS) is locked up at $63.5M/7 starting this year. I doubt he is on the block.

TBR (has already been selling)

Taj Bradley is not on the block.

Zack Littell (1 arb)

Pete Fairbanks ($3.7M in '25 w $7M option for '26 ($1M buyout)

Kevin Kelly (prearb) RP

Yandy Diaz ($10M w club option for '26) is a RHB corner IF'er who turns 33, soon

TOR

Bassitt ($22M for '25) might be too costly for JH, but just 1 year left.

Gausman ($22M x 2 more years) His contract might lessen the return needed.

Berrios ($18.7M AAV through '28) might be more of a "dump."

Kikuchi (FA) Owed about $4M and may be affordable

Trevor Richards (FA) RP'er doing okay

Chad Green ($10.5M in '25) is having a good year, but likely too expensive for JH.

Guerrero (1 big arb year left) RHB at 1B/DH (not really a fit for '25)

J Turner (FA) RHB at 1B/3B (2B in a pinch) and likes Boston

LAA

T Anderson ($13M in '25) LHP might be one of our best options

H Strickland (prearb) not likely available

Luis Garica (FA) Might be affordable

Rengifo is not someone I want, and Pillar might be a RHB fix, but we are loaded at OF.

DET

Skubal (2 arbs left!!!) LHP might be the top prize available

Flaherty (FA) maybe the best rental out there

Tyler Holton (prearb) LHRP

Shelby Miller (owed $1M for '24 with $4.25M option for '25) RP

Jason Foley (3 arbs) RP

Wil Vest (3 arbs) RP

Mark Canha RHB I'm not interested in

SFG

Jordan Hicks ($12M x 3 more years) SP Not much of an upgrade, but he eats innings

Ryan Walker RP (prearb)

Tyler Rogers RP (1 arb)

Taylor Rogers ($12M in '25 might be worth it) LHRP

(Chapman at 1B does not seem like an option)

Bumping up for a list of players who might be available...

Catchers can't catch 150 games. McGuire has sucked. What's not to get?

Wong can play 1B or 2B when not catching, so we add a 2nd RHB option.

A 20 year old prospect with power is “ not to get”

Garbage f”in trade for a beer leaguer

Garbage

2 7 out if break barring a miracle Sunday night

You continue the youth movement which includes a run at Soto next winter!

Those are the facts

Soto is a pipe dream, and that's an undisputable fact.

We need to trade for some cost controlled relievers from triple A or double A. Either stud relievers or starters that we can convert to stud relievers. We need to build up our depth because we have none now

I think we can get some significant RP'ers for prospects below #9 and Valdez.

If we have to deal Abreu, we can, but it better be for a decent RP with 2-3 more years of control.

Crochet got rocked by the Mariners today and DeJong committed two errors. if anybody would fit in with the Sox, it would be DeJong.

Interesting to hear Cora talk about DAFing McGuire to balance out the righty lefty balance. Obviously it's very important to the team.

That brings up the question what to do with our top 3 prospects, all left handed.

Let's be reasonable (I used that word to ward off any posters who overreact to posters who overreact)...

... even if Breslow trades one of the Big Three to make sure he gets an actually legitimately goodly MLB relief pitcher, one guy isn't going to be able to rebuild a bullpen that is burnt to the ground in time.

What we learned since the All-Star break is that the current Red Sox relievers just aren't good enough to stop contenders like the Dodgers and Yankees. Even if Breslow puts his job on the line and strips the farm of what it will cost to acquire as many as THREE bullpen arms, will that somehow resuscitate starters like Houck and Crawford, who have already approximated career-high innings pitched for an entire season?

So who do we sell?

It doesn't help that both Martin and what's his face is out.

Losing Martin and Slaten wounded the pen; not replacing them with at least one big league reliever by now has killed the pen.

Dombrowski in Philadelphia has the best record in the majors -- and a bullpen where five guys (including All-Star Matt Strahm) have thrown in at least 40 games -- and he just traded for Estevez, a closer with a 0.73 WHIP, and 32 strikeouts and just 3 (non-intentional) walks.

Dombrowski might be the best pure talent evaluator in the game.

He does need some money behind him to make things work.

He and the Phillies owner seem to be a match made in baseball high roller heaven.

Imagine having a billionaire owner here who is a lifetime Red Sox fan from Boston saying his goal is to "spend stupid."

The forum would still find something to complain about: "Why can't a guy that rich make it stop raining and be warmer in the Spring in New England!" (geez, just shut the dome and your yaps).

Meanwhile...

To KCR: Michael Lorenzen (SP)

To TEX: Walter Pennington

There are still plenty of pitchers on the block, and I hope Brez is not thinking Paxton is nearly enough.

He rarely gets a high-priced player that fails. That is a major plus. We've seen so many of our higher paid additions fail and fail badly.

I'm not sure what is record is with under-the-radar additions.
