Not as good as the Red Sox made him look.

He did have a 7.4 fWAR from 2022-2023 (17th best in MLB.)

He must have done well vs others, too.

I believe the only player on the SOX right now who could be referred to as a contact hitter is Masa.

Yup.

We don't have many high OBP guys, either.

And George Kirby did not make his MLB debut until May 8, 2022.

What is point of this thread when all of talksox ignorant?

Jansen unavailable Saturday night, but everyone condemned Cora for not using him.

I guess one thing that was highlighted in last night's game is that Breslow's plan to sign a situational RH bat in the offseason did not come to fruition...
Did Breslow have any plan?

Any thoughts on Abreu? He looks totally lost and nothing like last year. Taking good pitches and swing at bad ones.

He appears to be unconfident.

So Bello threw his 4 seamer 540 times last year and was hit hard....ops above 1.000.

His first outing? 0 4 seamers.

" Doc, it hurts when I raise my arm."

" Don't raise your arm."

Yuu, a damn good pitcher.

It has been a good week to have George Kirby, Brayan Bello and Nick Pivetta in a fantasy lineup. We'll see how Bryce Miller does Sunday.

Unprepared, overmatched, on his way out when Refsnyder comes back.

Woke up with a sore back and just couldn't get loose. Maybe when it's warmer...

... at the trade deadline.

Like the one last year when Chaim Doomed didn't think the Red Sox could finish last without the services of Jansen, Paxton, Turner, and Sale.

Or maybe he could have acquired a pitcher or two since the Sox were only 2 games out of the postseason…

... a guy who could've still been part of the pitching staff this year and beyond -- that would be a fair exchange for a veteran starter 30 days after being named AL Pitcher of the Month on an expiring contract...

... (before he inevitably broke down again in the next month) -- a select few of us said emphatically at the time.

I am a big fan of Bernardino. Disappointed he is not part of 26. Edited by Nick

I am watching Sale pitch against the Phillies today. I always enjoyed watching him pitch.

I was watching sale pitch as well. Looks like an injury waiting to happen

Moon, I would love to see 'non-performing' contracts by year....

2024 $41,250 (Giolito, Sale and Hendriks)

This is the area where we have to get better.....I'm convinced going young is better...players getting hurt will reinforce Henry's thinking about not signing 30+ pitchers.

I think we're doing the right thing by pitching Bello, Kutter, Houk and Whitlock. Let's see what we have....

What is the $41K number mean? ($41M?)

Hendriks probably will pitch, this year.

$41M

I have fat fingers....

We also signed Paxton a couple years ago, knowing the first year was a wash.

We've had our share of injuries, especially to many of our top paid players.

Sale

Story

Giolito

Paxton

Kluber

Nate

ERod (COVID)

Say it works, and in a few years the Sox are in the thick of the hunt. When a guy or two develops a nagging shoulder or elbow, and maybe just needs -- not to go on the IL -- but to skip some turns in the rotation... do you THEN invest in additional established starting pitching? (the reinforcements never added in the Bloom Era)

If it's Yes -- then who: a proven veteran on a costly longterm contract, or a younger MLB starter with a lower AAV but higher longterm ceiling who will cost more talent in exchange?

Which investment will cost more of the budget and which will cost more in roster WAR? Which cost is more preferable in the Breslow Era?

Signings like Gio seem to hurt more. The Paxton and hendriks signings were based on them missing time, early, and that is why the contract was reflective of that fact.

Was Paxton worth it? Pretty close call.
