It would not be the first time a Sox team made the playoffs after not having high hopes in March.

Much to my own surprise this team could make the playoffs IF and only IF they can avoid major injuries to their starters.

Only 6.1 IP.

He actually looked pretty good until his last two outings before he went on the IL with a shoulder injury. Seems awfully quick to give up on a guy.

They’ve already had major injuries to the rotation. Giolito isn’t having one of those minor tendon replacements…

Pivetta and Whitlock may return. One must, for sure.

The others have to give 28+ GS, IMO.

Sometimes I should read ahead before posting.

Giolito was never a member of this season's rotation. My optimistic take when he went down is that it would be an opportunity for younger pitchers to establish themselves as starters.

That doesn't mean Giolito can't have a successful comeback and contribute sometime next season. The only guarantee is that the Sox will have paid him $39 million by then to see if he can.

Since that backhoe bucket of money is basically spent, what do you think the chances are of Breslow investing more on either the staff or position depth this year -- if, say, the Red Sox hang in there for another two-three months and stay within a few games of a wild card?

Langeliers just swung and missed at a pitch way up high on a 3-2 count with bases loaded and 2 out in the 9th; it is a 0-0 games with the Yanks.

Zero or close to it, through no fault of his own.

I think we may be sellers, even if we seem to be in teh race.

Zack Gelof with the 2 run shot!

You’ve been predicting the Red Sox would be sellers the last three years. Before, during, and after the season.

But if not hurt, not only would he be in the rotation, but one of the pitchers in it would be in the bullpen. And we’d have more depth…

New CBO!

Point?

He was right but reality was a little inaccurate…

Besides, I never "predicted;" I said we "should."

This time, I said "I think we may..." That's hardly a prediction, either.

He confuses opinions with predictions.

Like he still thinks you predicted we'd sign Chapman.

Coulda, woulda, shoulda no matter how you want to go you’ll still get it wrong as always. Predictions, opinions, or wishful thinking.🤭🙈

I think baseball is down all across the board, and I think the Red Sox will stick around all year long. New CBO, or not I think they will play to the end with no sell off.

Kind of hard to be sellers when most of your sell candidates are on the IL

Kind of hard to be sellers on April 22 healthy, or not.🙈🤭

To each their own, for me it's just a little depressing to hear that when the team has gotten off to a much better start than one would have expected given the roster and the injuries.

Sell offs has been a major topic on here for some for the last 3 years before, during, and after a current season, and that’s a fact. There’s always a hunt for more suspects/prospects.🙈🤭

Another very intriguing and nuanced discussion ... Now, can you enlighten us profani as to the meaning of "CBO"???

Fair....very fair.

But that won't stop people in here from suggesting we need to be buyers to bring in what we need.

Bell, I said "I think they may..."

It's the conditional tense that obviously depends on certain circumstances for it to be an option. In no way did I predict it or say I hope we suck badly enough we'll have a sell off.

My point is, if we do, then it might be the right choice.

I have also said, I'm not sure what this team's upper brass might do, if we are on the fringe of competition.

The Vaz trade was made at a time where many were saying we should be buyers- not sellers, and we actually did do a bit of both, that summer.

Other summers, like in '20, when we got Pivetta was a good idea.

Many felt we should have sold, last summer.

But right now my preseason optimism feels justified.

Although the postseason prediction conditional on the starting pitching throwing 750 IP looks in jeopardy, with two starters already missing time…
