Has cutter Crawford added a splitter to his pitches this year???? He used to throw a fastball at three balls, now he throws something else!!!!

He threw a splitter last year about 8% of the time per statcast. It’s his least used pitch if you combine his slider and sweeper usage. Not a great pitch for him, but he should use it more and the knucklecurve less.

To me it's all coming down to whether they sign Monty or not. If they do I'll happy and if they don't (and the deal isn't crazy) I'll be pissed.

Sadly, I don't think it matters much. I just don't see this Sox team going anywhere. Ownership is not "all in" on winning and it shows. This is going to be the 5 year "Chicago Cubs" rebuild, getting high draft picks and hoping they turn into stars.

This is already year 5, six if you count 2019.

Teddy means the 5-year rebuild actually starts now. The past 5 were demolition derby.

We'll have another CBO to complain about when they're finally good.

Looking ahead to 2025, like Red Sox executives seem to already be doing, the future very well could be bright. If each of the top three prospects continue to progress as Sam Kennedy thinks they will, a roster of 13 hitters could potentially feature:

Catcher: Kyle Teel, Connor Wong

Infield: Triston Casas, Vaughn Grissom, Marcelo Mayer, Trevor Story, Rafael Devers, TBD Free Agent

Outfield: Jarren Duran, Masataka Yoshida, Roman Anthony, Ceddanne Rafaela, Wilyer Abreu

Setting aside the fact that eight of those twelve hitters listed are left-handed, that group can compete. But, what if one of the Big Three stalls?

Now that's what I'm talking about.....team controlled players.

Things are looking up a bit though. I think we have some actual baseball brains now with Breslow, Bailey et al.

I agree. It looks rough at the moment, but we may even see some dividends at the MLB level this season. The team won't be in the playoffs and most of us may not be watching, but some of the pitchers may find themselves in a much better position with the new staff in place.

If Mayer bounces back and really rakes this year, it will be interesting to see what position he plays by the end of the summer. A ballclub's top prospect usually doesn't ride the bench when he make the bigs... and it's hard to imagine a healthy Story moving off shortstop again or the budget Sox eating half of another big salary to trade a veteran.

Depends on how well Grissom is playing. Trade Mayer for in a package for an ace?

Mayer for DH.

Like so many other DH's on this roster. BTW, Dalbec did play at 3B in the last Dominican game. He is too tal to field ground balls is one observation.

Grounds crew needs to dig a trench at 3b. Got it…

Yet again, alas, all the positive things one can say about this team involve repeated use of the subjunctive.

Speaking of the subjunctive, reminds me of the old joke about the teacher and librarian on the train from Bangor to Boston. The Librarian said she was on her way to Boston to get scrod. The Teacher asked if she was using the subjunctive.

That's what is going to happen to Sox fans this year. We are getting scrod!

OK. It's late in the day, and perhaps I have an excuse. But I don't get it!

It's best told with a Maine accent. Scrod being the subjunctive of "screwed"

Not sure how my Youtube viewing came across podcast of Padres talking heads but they are all unhappy with Xander's contract.

Anyone here really think that would have been a good contract for the Sox?

No, too much money. Max 10/200, IMO.

Nobody ever thought it was.

Another joke along those lines:

A Newfoundlander goes to Boston to see a Red Sox game.

He accosts a young man to ask for directions. The young man happens to be a Harvard student.

Newfoundlander: Hey b'y, where's Fenway Park to?

Harvard student (scowling): Don't you know you're not supposed to end a sentence with a preposition?

Newfoundlander: Okay, where's Fenway Park to, arsehole?

With Gio out for the year and Grissom & Mata likely to miss opening day (IL?), this may be the opening day 26 man roster:

1. L Duran CF

2. L Devers 3B

3. R Story SS

4. L Casas 1B

5. L Yoshida DH

6. R O'Neill LF

7. L Abreu RF

8. L Valdez 2B

9. R Wong C

Bench: L McGuire, R Reyes, R Refsnyder, R Dalbec/Cron

SP1: Bello

SP2: Pivetta

SP3: Crawford

SP4: Houck

SP5: Whitlock

SP6/RP7 Wink (spot start/long relief)

Closer: Jansen

RP2: Martin

RP3: Bernardino

RP4: Slaten

RP5: Campbell

RP6: Weissert

RP7/8: Joely/Criswell

When Grissom returns, E Valdez goes to AAA. Mata may never make the 26, despite being out of options.

I got the scrod part. But I think you mean the 'past participle'? (It's not late in the day yet, but once I get my 'medication' going, I'll give it another try!)
