The Mets went on a spending spree and roster makeover that cost them 0 top prospects. If they want to replace Diaz, they’ll either pay someone (Ken Giles?) or take on an expensive salary dump that doesn’t require unloading their Top 100 guys. And those deals will be out there…

They spent the money because they had it, they had when there was a free agent market that has since dried up.

I don’t want to trade Jansen, nor do I find it likely, but if the Mets want to be dumb I’d listen. I think this bullpen should still be much better this year even without him.

I won’t say the Mets are disinterested in Jansen, but this notion that the Sox could run up the price and bleed the Mets dry is a little silly. Jansen isn’t the only other closer in the world.

As the Mets have already noticed, the closer market isn’t completely dry. Not to mention they do have Dave Robertson, who has more experience and a better track record than Daniel Hudson, who is also taking over the closer role for an injured pitcher for another of MLB’s highest payrolls. The notion that the Mets “need a big name” is silly, too. They just need someone to get late-game outs…

The Sox are not trading Jansen.

And the Mets aren’t trading anyone for a few months.

The Mets will sign Britton (who also helps with their dearth of LHP) and let Robertson close.

Robertson will be the closer. Draft accordingly in your fantasy leagues…

Unlikely that anyone is watching, but it's a real joy getting the Tampa Bay feed. Announcers actually let the game proceed rather than filling it with Youkilis etc. saying "You know that pitch was a strike but you don't always swing if it's not your pitch like when it's 2-0 but when there are two strikes you might have to swing at that to foul it off on the other hand sometimes a pitch outside the zone is one you like and you swing but you have to make sure it's not too far off the edge because you might swing and miss so you're looking for something over the middle but you're not going to get that every time so if it's outside the zone you try not to swing because if you miss you've lost the chance for a walk which in some situations like say the bases are loaded might be good but then if you're down 6 runs then ..."

Great post -- the perfect time to remember the clarity of Jerry Remy: "2-and-0, look middle in."

I am on here every day but don’t post much, mostly because I am not a baseball expert by any stretch, just a fan, and I don’t care for the adversarial nature of many of the discussions….that said I had to post on this. Great post and sums up my feelings perfectly. My goodness the NESN booth is atrocious this spring. Youk never shuts up. Middlebrooks is a cheerleader adding no insight. The play by play is average at best regardless of who is calling the game, and I really dislike OB (more a matter of his style than anything, it’s like he’s trying so hard to be “one of the guys” and he ends up with no chemistry with any of his color guys) so I have zero hope for this booth this year. Fortunately the baseball app allows the substitution of the radio pbp so I will be listening to Joe Castig. I sure miss Rem, Eck, and Donny O.

Good post. Like I call them OB, and the YUCKers. All the good play by play the Red Sox have had going back to Curt Gowdy, and now to me it’s just second, or third rate, and getting worse.

Kutter and Winks both pitched well today.

Sounds like one’s in, and one is out for now, and if, and when all is healthy both will be out untill someone gets hurt again.

You’re probably right, but you got to make an opening offer that you can come down from and still get good value. IdK maybe that’s so high they walk away, but I think of a GM was reasonably interested in a player they’d make a counter offer. Honestly, it doesn’t really make sense. The Sox are not trading Jansen.

It makes more sense for the Mets to go with another option and maybe trade for a mid inning guy to solidify their bullpen. Maybe, idk. But perhaps someone like Schreiber would interest them more for a much lower return. Probably not getting a top 10 guy for him right now. And I’m not sure I want to trade our bullpen depth for a b level prospect right now. That can wait until the deadline if this team sux.

Is there an easy way to do this? To get the radio feed over the web and sync it?

(Meanwhile, anyone who agrees with this should let NESN know. As in life, if you allow for bad behavior/performance, you will get nothing else.)

Relax, Larry. You're really worked up today.

I know it is only spring training, but he serves up more meatballs in an inning than the Olive Garden does in a week

I have an MLB.TV annual sub, I am in western Canada so it’s the only way I can watch all the Sox games. It’s actually an in game option to select audio that’s different from video and it is usually pretty synced up automatically. The other way I’ve done other sports is to find an online audio source and run that thru my surround while having the video source directly into my TV. Then I usually have to pause the video for a few seconds to let the audio catch up. Once it does, good to go.

I usually start watching the game around 1.5 hours after it started with no sound.

I fast forward commercials and in between pitches until I catch up live around the 8th or 9th inning.

I’m going to have to be quicker on the between pitches motions.

Thanks! Given the 'grey-market' feeds I get, not sure that will be possible. But I can always just listen to the radio and turn to the broadcast if anything interesting happens! (Certainly better than listening to the brain-numbing blather of Youk.)

Not sure who the moronic color commentator is today, but after a two-minute peroration, we now have learned that hitters often handle pitches in the zone better than ones that are not in the areas they hit best.

OMG. And now we learn that it might be better to put in the lineup players who have more skill than to keep them on the bench.

WOW! And now that if you hit the ball off the end of the bat it might not go so far as when you hit it on the barrel!! Whoa, this is Kuhnian!

Mediocre = as in nick pivetta 2 homers today

Cora "stuff wise we like it"....Really?

One can pitch well and still have 2 bad pitches.

Also, sometimes HRs are hit off good pitches.

(I did not see the game.)

Yes but if it happens all the time over long period, then what? He had good streak going early to mid season last year but he's not someone I get excited about. When he pitches, you better hope we score 4 runs or more.

I’m not expecting greatness from Pivetta, but I feel confident he can give us 30 starts at about a 4.50 ERA.

I would not be surprised by 3.90 to 4.10, either. I think he has a better chance at that than 4.90-5.10.

Pivetta’s goal today was probably something like 70-90 pitches. Somewhere in that range. You get the idea. What happens with those pitches might not matter at all…

Yep, I get it. In an era when starters fail to go 5 innings, backhanded compliment of "he's an inning eater" does have some value. If he's our #3, we won't make the playoffs.

If Pivetta is the Sox #3, it probably means Sale, Paxton, or both are out…

I had an MLB.TV sub, but did not and will not be renewing it. Where I live in Illinois (the Iowa border), blackout rules apply for Cubs, White Sox, Cardinals, Brewers, Twins and Royals games. That’s 24-26 games plus any ESPN/Fox/Apple games on top of that. I just can’t condone the blackout rules.

Cubs snd White a Sox I get. Cardinal and Brewer team broadcasts haven’t been shown in this area in 30 years, the Twins and Royals have never been shown here.

I’ve been able to gets around it via a VPN but late last year they seemed to have blocked that avenue as well. So I’ll just listen to Castiglione et al on satellite radio.

Bello, 11 pitches 2 strike outs in his first inning of spring training debut. He's someone I'm excited about. High ceiling guy I think, but maybe I'm in the minority. And to think Mata was higher rated three years ago......throw in Whitlock, Houck and Kutter to that mix, we have some young talent.

Bello, 25 pitches, 6 up, 6 down.

Some poster poopers will say he only faced Triple A batters Sunday, the same peers he dominated last summer. But that list might include future big leaguers -- and any level has trouble with a guy who throws 97 with movement, and commands sinkers, change-ups and sliders.

Maybe he won't be an All-Star this year, but Bello will throw some of the best games in the Red Sox '23 season.
