Career OPS:

Tapia

.709

.684 v LHP

Refsnyder

.676

.728 v LHP

It seems we have 3-4 OFers who do well v LHPs and better vs LHPs than RHPs, so Ref looks like the better choice.

I do recall a couple posters roasting Bloom for neglecting the need for a RH’d hitting OFer, last year.

How many years?

I believe since 2020, but certainly 2021 and 2022.

I remember there being a debate after Cora stated he would not platoon Dugo.

I’m not sure a full platoon is needed, and we had nobody, early last season, but vs tough lefties, I think he should sit.

Last year there was more on an emphasis on D in the OF too, but now that seems to be out the window also. You are one of the ones mentioned in an earlier post that values the Ref Man more than others, which I don’t, but that’s just my opinion. I would go with Tapia.

So, we no longer need the RHd OFer you argued for, last year?

To me, if Tapia and Ref’s splits were reversed, I’d be for Tapia, hands down.

If it was someone better than Ref Man yes, but I’m just not high on Ref Man, and would take Tapia over him.

I do recall Bloom preheating the oven before the season began by stating the need for a RH'd hitting OFer, last year. Then he never got one...

(and we were all talking about at least a platoon power-hitter to replace Renfroe's HRs)

Is it THAT much of a better choice when Refsnyder's defense is 3x as bad as Tapia's?

Yoshida LF

Duvall CF

Verdugo RF

Seems like the emphasis on defense in the OF will be "get the ball back in to the IF."

What do you mean? He got Refsnyder!

Definitely not for the entire year, but at least for the first 1-2 months, I think theres a few permutations of this roster that have both Refsnyder and Tapia on it. Actually, I think there's a pretty decent chance.

It would if it was.

It’s not.

So, it’s not.

Moving guys to various positions seems to be a trend in baseball. Maybe they think the versatility will save some money. I don't know, but it probably originates with the nerds that teams are staffing the front offices with these days. Anyway, it's not a big deal , at least until a Dalbec boots one at short .

Literally 3x worse.

Tapia: -4 DRS in 935 innings

Refsnyder: -5 DRS in 303 innings (would be ghastly if pushed to 900 innings)

I just think it's something that should probably go away now that it will be harder to truly shift on batters.

Anyway, Kluber threw 5 innings today. Whitlock threw 2. Martin and Joely each threw 1.

Rays lineup wasn't great, but can't complain.

Trend these days?

Yeah it’s this brand new thing that just sprang up around 1900 or so. Probably won’t catch on…

All this concern about Bobby D playing SS in a meaningless ST game to me is all about nothing. Like I said before there are a lot more things to be concerned about for the 2023 Red Sox than this.

Just waiting on Bello and Paxton

I don't think that anybody is all that concerned about where Dalbec is playing. Just something to talk about.

The only real concern is MLB v AAA.

Who was the first Ben Zobrist type, notin? If anyone would know, it's you.

If he's on the MLB roster, it's as a bench bat or due to an injury.

I just think if they really want to maximize Dalbec's "utility" that there are other ways to do it. And yes, we are talking about it because half of the players are at the WBC and it's ST. Not much else to talk about right now. There's still a chance Dalbec isn't on the 40 man roster at the end of March.
