After last year with Franchy Strange Glove at 1B anything is possible, or wouldn’t surprise me to what Cora would try. He might be better than Arroyo in the OF, but who knows.

For a moment there, your post read like Cora was the one responsible for assembling the roster.

Next, why not just stretch out Dalbec on a mound in Worcester?

Instead of spending $600 million on Ohtani, Bobby D can be an affordable alternative; he might not be as good, but could be a draw for the goal of sustained ticket sales.

I KNOW who assembled the roster. I don’t get all the hubbub in trying something in a meaningless ST game. Just chill out, and have a Gansett.

Koss has no chance to make the 26. This isn’t about winning a STing game. It’s about seeing if Bobby Dee might be an emergency, 1 game or partial game back up at SS.

Who said it was about winning? I don't think Dalbec should be put at SS period.

Dalbec had a good arm in college, but I think it was his personal choice to no longer want to pitch.

He has had a couple of cameos in a regular season game, so it’s not like he hasn’t done it before.

He shouldn't. It makes no sense.

I'm all for it, unless it goes wrong.

If it goes wrong, best go wrong in March.

Besides, even if he plays SS, he’s likely far enough down the depth chart that any experience is a plus…

They f***ed around with Arroyo last ST and he looked horrible in RF for too long. Seems like they are repeating a similar mistake to me. This team has a tendency to do some really weird s*** that doesn't always work out.

Maybe it's nothing, but I'd just keep Dalbec at 1B/3B/LF/bench bat.

I know Bloom thinks it's "going to be awesome" but I'm dubious. If ST doesn't really matter and players can goof off like this, just cancel it altogether.

Not you.

If Dalbec might be forced to play SS, again this year, playing him one game in STing is not something to read too much into. (Not that you are, personally.)

Arroyo wasn’t an OF, and Franchy wasn’t an IF. Bobby D while might not be a good one is at least an IF who hasn’t played SS in a regular game this year. There should be all kinds of worries going into the regular season for the Red Sox, but I don’t believe Bobby D playing SS in a ST game is one of them. ST is for pitchers to get their work in most importantly, so I don’t think you could cancel it.

I mean, they've put him into regular season games before. I think they should just stop doing it. That's all I'm saying.

I just can't wait to get clarity at the Red Sox shortstop position once the WBC ends.

Yes, I'm talking about WBC Pool A MVP -- Yu Chang!

AlDFAberto Mondesi

Hey, the Ref Man finally got a hit, and a HR to boot. Does he beat out Tapia?

I think they are both on the 26 man to start the season.

At this point you have to give Tapia a chance unless he completely falls off a cliff he makes this team.

Dalbec has done regular season emergency duty at shortstop before. He may have to do it again. If Story, Mondesi, Kike, Arroyo and Chang are out, I’ll take Dalbec over Refsnyder or Wong at SS for a few innings…

I don’t think it’s similar to Arroyo at all. One guy was part of a platoon, the other guy is 6 people deep on the depth chart.

Don’t you think other teams experiment with the positions of bench players in ST? And always have?

The big differed Refsnyder is on the 40 man and Tapia isn’t. Not sure if Tapia’s contract stipulates his release if he isn’t added…

He has an upward mobility clause, I believe if he isn't added to the 26 man he can be asked to be released.

I'd take Tyler McDonough -- he plays everywhere and is hitting .800.

I know it's just spring training, but even if Ty only hits half that in the Show, he'll make the Hall of Fame.

Jay Groome’s fastball velocity is up about 2 mph. He appears to be close to his first taste of the majors. Soon, he could be a Padre after all. “It was nice just knowing they felt the same way still, all this time later.”

I’d all but given up on Groome, but it probably won’t take much for him to outproduce Rosier and Ferguson…

Last year, it was Fitzy.

If there wasn't an obvious past tendency for this team to put players in positions that would make many of them seem like utility players, I guess that I would be ok with some experimenting. I think putting a player like Dalbec in a position that he likely will never play during the actual season isn't going to affect him or them much. I think that it is a waste of time and they have done it too many times with other players. It worries me - I don't like it.

I understand the concerns about Dalbec playing SS and guys getting jerked around, but who knows, maybe this time the "versatility" thing will pay off. Dalbec reportedly fielded the position well on Tuesday and he's playing there again today.

If it gives Dalbec a better chance of being on the team, and he makes good use of the chance, it'll be a feel-good story.

That's my Pollyanna take for the day.

I’d have concerns if Dalbec was a proposed solution for Story’s injury, but that’s hardly the case. Last year, there was a mini-panic on this board when we learned Dalbec had been working out at 2b and in the OF. And we didn’t even learn about that until August!! At which time Dalbec had accrued 0 innings at either position…

I guess Bloom may have given Sox fans a bit of a phobia about a philosophy of "anybody can play anywhere".
