You kind of have to care about payroll when you don’t have the same money coming in from ticket sales.

If anything, the rays way of doing business shows they do care about winning, because they’re are efficient as one can be with what they have to work with.

One thing to note: if the Rays win a ring, will their revenues go up significantly?

I doubt it.

That doesn’t mean that’s why they don’t spend big, even once, but they do make the occasional Charlie Morton signing.

They care about winning. It’s obvious.

The budget prevents rings but trading stars at just the right time is part of why they win more consistently than big spending Boston.

Tampa has a payroll of about 75 million if they truly wanted a championship its within their reach whenever they want it, if the Sox or any other organization had a contending team and could spend 160 million and still be under the luxury tax that’s the ideal position to be in, so the only reason they haven’t won is because they are cheap and payroll is all that really matters to them, it doesn’t matter if they win they just collect their revenue sharing from the league and the $100,000,000.00 from tv rights this year every team is guaranteed this under the new mlb contract, so don’t tell me about their budget, their on welfare

The reality is their owner won’t spend, and maybe partially because it won’t add much revenue

I understand that, but with their welfare payments from mlb it pays all payroll and they have 50 million or so left over some big 1 or 2 year contracts for a championship would be possible, but they don’t even try, just put that welfare money in the owners pocket, I don’t like the ray way, by the way the Sox get 100 million too, plus they own the tv station

Kind of weird that Florida has such low-revenue teams.

Especially since there is no state income tax, you would think the players would want to be there, maybe they do and no one wants to spend

Tampa has the second worst stadium in the league and is in a horrible location.

Miami isn’t a great sports market, but outdoors baseball in South Florida in June - August is miserable.

If you are making a million+ annually, and you make life-decisions based on your unwillingness to pay state taxes, then you are a materialistic scumbag. The one good thing about rich a-holes smugly heading to Florida for this reason is that they will be more than making up for it with the property taxes on their mega-mansions.

The point I was trying to make was the Rays could use that as a way to offer a lower salary on signings because their net would be higher than other states, but what you said is true

I don't like it either. I've argued for a floor cap for as long as I can remember.

One reason it is "possible" for the Rays to just spend more and win, is because they have a great system outside the budget.

The Pirates could spend $200M, this winter and still suck.

Yup, and I'm sure franchises make that argument all the time to agents, where it will fall on deaf ears, since an agent's percentage is based on gross, not net! Also, players will hardly notice the difference in money, but they WILL care about the symbolic value of their listed salary. (I imagine there are a lot of players who think HEY, I make 50Million over five years! which is 'better' than some poor slob who makes a mere $49million in a tax free state. It won't matter that his 'net' may be less.)

Some cities would love to have a team like Tampa, but no one shows up to watch them either. Near the bottom in attendance in all MLB.

I once heard someplace that the players have to pay taxes to multiple states because they are considered to be working in that state when playing away games in other states, not sure but it sounds right

This lover of cheap seats just bought $1 tickets (plus $7.29 in fees) to see a Wednesday afternoon game at the worst stadium in the league.

At least the Oakland A's will be playing a good team in the Atlanta Braves.

TBR might by spending $40-60M.

You said the pirates would suck even if they spent $200 million this winter, I just pointed out that they have a very good farm system and their payroll is $30 million less than the Rays and their owner is cheaper than the Rays so we’ll never know

They would suck in 2023, if they spent $200M. Their farm does not have 6 ML ready players to supplement the $200M spent.

That was my point. Their whole system sucks. They have a good farm, because the draft near first every year. They don't use it, like the Rays did.

You know who did a great job, the Orioles they are playing very good have the number 1 farm system and the lowest payroll in baseball and an owner that will spend, nice place to be GM they are $193,000,000.00 under the luxury tax they could afford to sign Judge easily if they wanted,

What is so horrible about that location?

I was in St. Pete last November and didn’t see the problem. It’s right off the highway. What the big deal?

The "if they wanted" is the key.

They also just traded away the heart and soul of their team at the deadline, while in the middle of their first playoff race in several years.

I feel the same way. I went to a game there a while back, and thought the place was pretty nice.

I guess the problem is with people who drive from Tampa are crowded onto one highway, but it's not like TBR have the only traffic issues on game days.

How many people bashing the stadium have been there?

What happened to "the eye test?"

I’m not even saying it’s good. I got the impression out was out in the middle of nowhere.

I’ve seen plenty of other stadiums right off the highway (but not Fenway, as I-90 is close but has no convenient exit), but I couldn’t tell why it was such a bad stadium. Is the traffic awful? Bad parking? If it’s either of these, is it worse than Wrigley? (Not possible.) I just do t know and as it was November, I couldn’t find out in a timely manner.

I’m sure it’s something. mvp complains about it and he lives down there somewhere…
