Bradley has been a negative player since he joined the Brewers. Why would you want that on your team? His defense while still good isn't what it used to be. This ain't 2018 where you had a juggernaut offense where you can afford to have him the lineup. And not only that he can't even provide the offense that he did in 2018 so its even worse now. And to top that off the salary he's getting for this. I'd be surprised if he plays on a MLB team next year.

I hated the trade from day one, even if the money was even.

That being said, I think the thoughts were that renfroe might decline and JBJ might return closer to his .700ish norm. The prospects were supposed to even out any shortcomings.

What bothers me most about this trade is that many fans act like this was the only move Bloom made, or that it outweighs all the other ones, including getting Renfroe at just $3.2M, the season prior.

Few factors to this, one the team is struggling this year so all the moves he made that didn't pan out will be scrutinize more and secondly its because it was a head scratcher from day 1.

I was the original head-scratcher.

BTW, most of his winter & deadline moves did work out:

+

Wacha

Strahm

Schreiber

Refsnyder

McGuire

Pham

???

Story

Hosmer

Ja. Davis

-

JBJ

Diekmnan (but he dumped his '24 salary and got McGuire for him)

Hill (not horrific for $5M, until recently)

The team got worse, more as a result of returning vets declining and injuries than "all the moves he made."

The trade has been unpopular since the day it was announced, but it wasn’t as bad IMO.

The Sox acquired Bradley to improve OF defense, and I. That respect it worked. When Kike went down, the Sox were 29-27 and amidst a ferric hot streak, this despite a 10-19 start in which the Sox simply didn’t hit.

Since Bradley got realeased and the Sox had to cobble together anyone to play CF and RF, we saw how horrific OF defense can contribute to bringing team down.

Bradley’s offense - even from the ninth spot - was obviously a huge factor in his release, but I still don’t dislike this trade and actually dislike the release of Bradley much more…

They needed to see if Duran could play CF. He couldn't.

Some people on here thought he wouldn't be that bad and that he could figure it out. haahahahahahahahahahahah

You should know about defense before the bigs. To me, they knew. That's why it took so long to call him up.

I don't even trust the guy in Fenway's LF.

I trust soxprospects, and scouts in general. It was no secret his defense was pretty bad and I remember everyone (ok a few people) clamoring for him to be the next CFer because he had nice AAA numbers and he was fast. I remember a few people even saying he "passed the eye test" It's funny how everyone passes the eye test during their first game on TV after putting up good numbers in AAA.

Yeah, he's fast so even if his instincts aren't great, his speed will make up for it... Well, that definitely worked out as planned.

LF only glove and his bat needs to carry that position.

I think they should have considered moving him back to 2b once they saw that OF wasn't working out. I mean, how many years to you give a guy before he learns to track a fly ball?

Maybe.

The point is, they knew he was bad on defense when they called him up.

The one positive thing is the damage was to 2022 only.

Not really.

1. Renfroe has one more arb year. We could have had him in 2023.

2. We pay an $8M buy out for JBJ for '22, and although it does not count on the tax line, it may keep JH from forking over $8M more to Bloom.

You're right; no one should make the majors if he can't play major league defense. But I'm beginning to think that most posters who were willing to give Duran a chance were old guys like me, who grew up assuming every kid dreamed of being a big leaguer, and at least played every day, all summer... and got kazillion reps on basic fundamentals -- like judging a ball in the air.

But we know that's not true anymore, not this century, or even in the 90s and 80s.

Question is: do all modern organizations struggle promoting not-ready-for-D-time minor leaguers like Franchy or Duran? Not-an-Answer: at least Cordero sacrificed himself running into a wall, instead of Duran staring at the wall -- which he will never live down in Boston... and probably needs to be traded for his own sake.

Disagree on 2. How many times have we said the tax number is the important one? We virtually forgot about Rusney's salary once he was removed from the tax rolls. But now you keep bringing up the $8 mill.

It is most important but that $8M is not irrelevant.

$8M is a lot.

It might not mean JH will shy away from spending $8M more in 2023, but it might mean he spends $3-6M less than he would have without the JBJ buyout. Maybe all 8, maybe no affect.

Down one in the ninth. Pinch hit with Almora and McGuire while Devers is on the bench. Why? Who made that decision? Cora? Or was he told? Are they trying to win or not? And how do they expect the fans to feel about it ?

The funny thing is, I was the one who always tried to remind people about Rusney's money.

I doubt that JH will let the Bradley buyout impact the team's budget for 2023.

For some reason, and Cora is not the only one believing this, a day off means a full day off- no ifs, ands or buts.

Like a PH is going to exhaust Devers (or Bogey).

It's a fair question. My guess is that Devers is not 100%. If we were still in the hunt the decision might have been different.

It's almost what Rusney got per year.

Rusney got 73 million for 6 years, but OK.

$8M vs 12, okay, not too close, but add what we spent in 2022 for JBJ vs Reenfore's arb cots and we're close to one year of Rusney.

(But then you could try to add Renfroe's 2023 arb, assuming we didn't trade him, again, in theory.)

It’s easy to pass the eye test when no one sees you play…

I don’t know if Devers is 100% or not. Supposedly this was just a scheduled day off.

The sad thing is, I can totally understand using McGuire over Devers as a pinch hitter given how both have hit over the last 6 weeks.

Almonte? That does raise the question about Devers…

Devers has been struggling since coming off the IL. Maybe he has some lingering issues with the hamstring.

The irony there is if the Sox went into “sell mode” at the deadline, maybe Devers takes a few extra days and comes back at full strength. But because they were still going for it, they may have the worse Devers product…

Devers hasn't been 100% for a while. And wasn't he hobbling even before going on the IL?

Probably. I don't watch enough games to know.
