I suppose there will unfortunately be no motivation at all for Price to opt out of his 7 year deal next year. Is there? I can't imagine a single one, but I would love to think there's more than one.

I'm a liberal, but it's hard to bear the thought of guaranteed long contracts in sports. I'd like to see max guaranteed contracts in each sport, as in two years in the NFL, three years in the MLB, and the same in the NBA. And no extensions, please, until after those three years are completed.

The players union would probably fight tooth and nail against limits on long term contracts, but given how many go sour, I would think it needs to be considered. Price for 7 years was a crazy example.

Yeah, I'm sure the Union would strike over it.

A proven work horse star like David Price is perhaps just the kind of pitcher you don't sign long term. His very health (work load) should be as much a warning sign as a proof of his longevity. I'm sure we and everyone thought about this at the time of his signing, but we had the money then, and wanted or needed to make a big splash.

That is what most people are saying.

The next thing they say is get him out of town as soon as possible.

One way or another he is burying himself in the Boston market.

Shame really. He was so good for so many years and then he gets the big contract to come to Boston and he gets hurt, shits himself, and get hurt again ( cough cough ).

Another expensive mistake I guess.

Can you imagine the s--- storm we would be having if he was fat too!!! That would be great.

I am never a fan of this type of contract, but honestly, if one were going to be given out to a 30 year old pitcher, Price is the type of pitcher who is the surest bet. I don't think anyone could have foreseen things going this badly in the first two years of this contract. And things can still certainly turn around.

Just say no to long term free agent contracts.

To do that you really should have a strong minor league system.

The minor league system is really strong for position players and relievers. Starting pitching? Nah.

This is weird, figure you would bring an injury up rather quickly. Or if your feeling uncomfortable with your arm. Not the day of a schedule start. Who the F-ck knows with this guy. Cant figure him out either.

What possible reason would the Union have to make a concession just so the owners can save themselves from themselves? What it would amount to is spreading the money now going to the best players out to go to average players. (Not sure who has the most clout in the union, but in the NBA, you can see that union leaders--the best players-- seem to tailor agreements to benefit themselves). And why would the owners care? All it would do is keep a few of the richest teams from over-paying a few duds. Would NYY want an agreement in place that keeps them from getting a star by overpaying him long term? WOuld the RS? As long as the money keeps rolling in (and it seems to), the only people who get worked up over these contracts are the fans (which is probably a good thing as far as fan interest goes).

FWIW he had the MRI done on Thursday.

Well Price could always pull a Lackey and turn back into a good pitcher.

It is concerning to hear health issues are popping up for him at this age though.

I wouldn't actually be averse to the Red Sox trading Price. But only if we got a good return.

Lately he seems to be snapping under the pressure in Boston.

But Price has at least been MLB average and an innings eater, even if he hasn't been the Ace we imagined we were signing when handing out the mega contract.

With the huge struggles of last year's Cy Young winner - Rick Porcello - does anyone know WHY he's struggling so badly? -- It looks like we will have to hold onto Price for now.

But I wouldn't be surprised if he were gone next season to a pitching starved team as long as we could get a reasonable return for him.

http://www.weei.com/blogs/alex-reimer/report-red-sox-using-back-channel-efforts-schedule-meeting-between-dennis?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

An unapologetic David Price told reporters Saturday he will speak with Dennis Eckersley “face-to-face” about their month-old airplane confrontation. But apparently, no meeting between the two pitchers has been scheduled.

The Boston Globe’s Dan Shaughnessy reports there are currently no plans for Price and Eckersley to meet up, despite “back-channel efforts” by Red Sox officials. Price has not spoken with Eckersley since he berated him on the team plane in late June.

This is just nonsense right now. Thanks Farrell!

They should have squashed this on day one.

http://www.csnne.com/boston-red-sox/boston-red-sox-david-prices-return-will-be-gradual-john-farrell-says

David Price resumed throwing Tuesday, playing catch for the first time since he went to the disabled list with left elbow inflammation on Friday.

How quickly the lefty can get back on a mound and in a game is not clear, but it seems safe to assume it’ll take at least a couple weeks before he’s back with the Sox.

“Twenty five throws at 60 feet,” Sox manager John Farrell said. “Would look to maybe increase the distance of that tomorrow. But this will be a gradual building back out to tolerance. But felt good enough today to put a ball back in his hand, so an encouraging day.”

Farrell said on Friday that he was hopeful Price would play catch Monday or Tuesday, so he seems to be moving at an expected pace.

The bullpen, meanwhile, could get another lift this weekend, when Joe Kelly could return from the disabled list. He’s to start a minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket on Wednesday. Carson Smith is to face hitters on Thursday and could begin his own rehab assignment on the weekend.

Maybe a September return for Price? We'll have to see.

Good news about Kelly coming back. Smith is still an unknown commodity and can't be relied on yet.

@PeteAbe

David Price did some long toss and is now throwing from 60 feet with pretty good intensity.

@PeteAbe

That was Price’s most involved workout since he went on the DL. Would not seem too far from getting back on the mound.

How soon until the quote from Farrell that his arm didn't respond they way he hoped?

getting price back healthy would be a boost, but only if he is healthy.

We already have pedroia playing on one leg. We do not need anymore walking wounded.
