I'm still saving you a seat on the Playoff Party Bus.

That's fine. Price will probably have his arm in a sling by that point anyway.

Maybe his delayed start to the season will be a blessing in disguise.

Maybe he will be better rested for the postseason.

Price rehab slowed by elbow soreness. They aren't making a big deal about it as he is being allowed to play catch but won't face live batters for a bit.

Last night, "sources" were saying it was being slowed in preparation for facing live hitting. Now it's due to "elbow soreness." Consider me shocked. Shocked!

As I've said all along, he won't pitch until June (if at all) and will be getting surgery before the season is over.

This is a red flag. You may well be right:

"TORONTO (AP) — Red Sox manager John Farrell says pitcher David Price has been dealing with “soreness” in his recovery from an injured left elbow.

Price threw on flat ground for the second straight day before Thursday afternoon’s game against Toronto. He is to throw a bullpen session in Baltimore on Friday.

Price was the 2012 AL Cy Young Award winner with Tampa Bay. He was 17-9 with a 3.99 ERA last year, his first with Boston. He felt discomfort in his elbow after a two-inning simulated game in February.

Price threw three bullpen sessions over six days last week, the last on Saturday. He was to have thrown to hitters while the team was in Toronto but those plans were shelved. He took three days off before playing catch Wednesday.

Price is in the second season of a $217 million, seven-year contract."

Nothing against Price, but his contract is an example of how crazy baseball staffing has become. Taking a pitcher based on past performance is one thing but to take a pitcher with a lot of innings on his resume for 7 years has got to be folly. To get an ace is extremely costly on the free agent market. The move for Sale looks like a relative bargain but pitchers are fragile and teams better wake up and keep the years down to three. More than that just winds up being a costly mistake.

The same can be said for the Ellsbury FA deal the Yankees got themselves into. He is a good player but going out on a limb on a long term contract hurts the Yankees ability to compete.

I would hope there is an industry shift and realize the folly of giving pitchers 5-7 years.

Price threw his curveball in a bullpen today and said he felt fine. Hopefully he can build on that.

I am glad he "said he felt fine". I will feel fine when he faces major league hitting and is effective.

I agree but you have to build on something.

You do have to wonder how much Price would reveal to the media...if his elbow was still sore would he have told anyone but the Sox staff? I wouldn't blame him if he wanted to stay out of the limelight now.

it's the winners curse - and baseball has already been found guilty of collusion before (and very likely did with Barry Bonds too). a team will give those years to win the auction. price was a fairly good bet considering - no history of arm trouble. (we'll see what happens here, at least it's not shoulder which is where the real nightmares start)

BTW: It was my argument for extending Lester - while there was very little chance he'd be an ace in year 4-5, his history of durability makes it very likely he could still be a solid innings horse - which given the entirety of the deal, isn't too shabby.

I'm sure there is probably always soreness, it depends on how much he can tolerate.

If the Sox can get Price back with the training wheels off by June it is a good outcome ...

I'm not so sure those 5-7 year contracts are going to keep happening with pitchers as more and more teams get burned.

I agree, we can pretty much forget May.

There is going to be soreness from getting a good workout, I am sure. Training is hard. But if its soreness due to injury then he is risking his career if he keeps trying to push through it. We really aren't going to know much until he tries to pitch in a real game.

That would mean he would begin some games at Pawtucket at some point?

Hopefully in a couple weeks, which would probably be a first week in June return.

“There’s no announcement at this point,” said Farrell. “We’ve got to sit with him (this morning) and talk about what’s best for him, best for us, as we move forward.”

Farrell offered this report: “He came out of tonight’s game feeling fine physically. He got to maybe the goal number of pitches thrown. A couple of extended innings early once again. But we had a scout there that liked what he saw in terms of the physical stuff. The line score isn’t going to be what we’ll see going forward, but from just answering the physical side of it, I think he’s answered that tonight.”

Typical Farrell speak. Gobledegook.

I say keep Price off out of MLB games until he has his stuff and is ready to pitch at least as well as last year.
