If Price makes it back, the question is whether we want him pitching out of the rotation or out of the pen in the playoffs. Right now, I'm leaning towards the pen, but that could change over the next couple of weeks.

Time is running out for David Price to return to the Red Sox, and manager John Farrell conceded today that it would be “aggressive” to bring Price back as a starting pitcher in 2017, Evan Drellich of CSN New England writes. Farrell suggested that Price would require at least one more simulated game before being ready to start. The skipper alluded to the possibility of giving Price a fairly short start and allowing the expanded bullpen to cover whatever innings are needed beyond that point, though he noted that no decision has been made. “These are things we have to sit down and discuss and determine what’s best for him.” As for Price himself, he told reporters that, more than anything else, he just wants to get back onto a Major League mound regardless of his role: “I just want to pitch. Whatever it is, that’s fine.

Interesting. Thanks, moonslav. I've read about his practices, but this is the first time I've seen an analysis and a quote from Farrell on how Price might actually pitch again this year--or not. Price still has good stuff when he uses all of it and hit his spots. A short start (3, 4 innings?) might be worth trying before the postseason.

fyi - he is borderline "demanding" to be a starter....he wont be happy in a RP role.

Not sure he could even go 5 innings right now. Maybe give him a chance down the stretch, but who does he really push into the pen? Maybe go 6 man rotation and give Sale some rest?

Meh. I'd let him start and go 3 or 4 first time out to see how he looks against real hitters. His start could bump Porcello (with Porcello being the long reliever) or ERod (who has now pitched well twice in a row) or even Fister (which I don't like). The point is to find out where Price really is just in case it's actually a pretty darn good place. I would not rest Sale because I like how he is working on his breaking stuff and keeping the ball low.

Piggyback him. Hell, Girardi is yanking guys in the fifth inning like a madman these days.

That would take too much mental effort for John Farrell.

This. Completely this!! Give Price a three inning start (if he lasts that long) and then follow up with Porcillo for as many as he can go.

There's been a little speculation that the Sox read these message boards from time to time, and if they've ever considered doing anything posted here this is the time!

Just curious: who is doing the speculation? And who is "the Sox"?

I don't think those who post, say, a dozen or more posts a year here are in any serious way representative of Sox fans, and I doubt also they are the ones who put the pennies in the seats. Just a question, how much money do you contribute to the RS a year in games and merchandise? My number is $0, and I imagine I am not alone. Why would anyone in the organization care what posters here think?

I choose not to believe this. I hope they have better resources for information.

If not, HEY SIGN JD MARTINEZ! ALSO, WHY DID YOU WAIT SO LONG TO BRING DEVERS UP?

Dear Red Sox person reading TS. John Farrell is trying to steal your wife/SO. You need to get him away from this club ASAP.

1). There were several consecutive posts by regular posters here who were discussing the idea.

2), "The Sox" was a generalization including anyone who might have any input into the Boston Red Sox strategy.

It's not a matter of "caring" about what anyone here thinks. It's a matter of not automatically dismissing an idea just because it doesn't come from someone within the organization.

And to answer your last question, assuming it's any of your business, between my ST tickets and what I spend at JB Park, my NESN package, my infrequent trips to Fenway, and the merchandise it's probably ~$2000. That doesn't give me the right to be listened to but it also doesn't rule out the possibility that I - or someone like me - might have an idea worth listening to.

My God. How did this topic take on a life of it's own??? All I said was,

"There's been a little speculation that the Sox read these message boards from time to time, and if they've ever considered doing anything posted here this is the time!"

Just to clarify, just like nearly everything else I post here, it's JUST MY OPINION!

I appreciate this opinion because it gives me something different to riff on.

Hey! I was there for that! Sitting in the grandstand area looking right down the third baseline. I saw it happen but didn't know what was going on until I got back to my room and saw it on TV. All I saw was a flash of white in the stands.

According to sources, the guy that got his with the pizza was ragging on the pizza thrower during the game for bringing outside food into the ballpark. This annoyed pizza thrower so much that he sprung into action when the foul ball came their way.

Back in the day, I always brought in outside food, usually bbq tofu burritos from Burrito Max (RIP).
