'Behind on his conditioning' - do we mean because of his shoulder issues or because he's out of shape?

That sounds like non shoulder issues, but IDK. We always infer a lot this time of year.

Being "behind on conditioning" is different than what is posted above in relation to his shoulder. Hope that helps.

I said that’s when Cora said he was behind in his conditioning, and he spelled everything out, so if I hadn’t heard the interview with Cora what you had posted wouldn’t have helped much as watching the interview itself. Watching, and listening you get a lot more info than reading something from someone else.

It's always been like that, it's just that we're inundated by it now because of the net.

I disagree.

Are you saying there's actually a difference between a sore shoulder that limits workouts, and just sitting on a beanbag doordashing Chipotle? My son is going to yell at me again...

I disagree.

"If it bleeds, it leads."  Very, very old expression.  Goes back to the late 19th century.

Sensationalism has always been part of the media, but much was "off grounds" back in the day.

It has changed and got worse, and not just because of increase access.

Do you think stuff like the Devers/Bregman controversy was ever "off grounds", though?

Of course not, and I don't see anything wrong with the media asking anyone who will answer what they think about something their customers are interested in.

I do think the media has contributed in making this a bigger drama than it is, but it's newsworthy.

My point about "the way of the world" goes much deeper that happened over this.

Reporters have to ask tough questions, like about the physical condition off Devers. I can understand the Q pissing Devers off, but even his manager is saying he's behind on conditioning, so WTH?

I wish they'd ask him how his shoulder feels, not how big his gut is.

On how it was back in the day, and I want to avoid politics: the media knew JFK was having affairs, and it was largely seen as "off grounds" by most of the media. That was my point about almost everything being fair game, now.

Raffy’s shoulder bothered him all last season, but yet nothing was serious enough to have surgery. The report from the Fort says Raffy has been fielding ground balls at 3B, but hasn’t  Started throwing yet until next week.

I think it is more than just a sore elbow!!! I feel bad for the kid.

He went from out of baseball to independent league league to being rushed through the Sox system into MLB appearances in 2024. If he never pitches again, it's still quite a success for him. As a LHP who throws hard, he might stick around a while and get another shot somewhere. I don't know if it'll be here.

I wonder about the history of American journalism, but I believe in this case 'back in the day' would refer largely to the tight-assed professional journalism of the 20th c (conditioned both by two wars ... or three or four ... and the arch conservatism of the 50s and early 60s).  Anyone have a sense of this history?  Journalism was pretty salacious in early America I think.

Good point- kinda like an upside down bell curve.

In the large sample size of a seven-inning game vs. amateurs, it was good to see at bats by The Password, also known as Justin Sin Garcia (as pronounced by TC and Merloni on NESN).

Garcia is a strong right-handed hitter who led the org in minor league home runs last season. Already on the 40-man at 22, maybe he'll soon be part of the outfield core (look how fast Campbell and Anthony moved up in one year).

Maybe this is a reason why Breslow hasn't invested in adding a righty swinger. Garcia looks a little like Manny, but reportedly is good enough to play all three outfield positions... (must be really quick).

This kid looks like the next exciting prospect. I'm looking forward to keeping an eye on his growth.

Priester on the mound, today. Anthony was scratched, yesterday but is in today's line-up:

1. DHam SS

2. Anthony LF

3. Rafaela CF

4. Narvaez C

5. Mayer DH

6. Grissom 2B

7. Toro 1B

8. Thompson RF

9. Sogard 3B

We plat the Rays.

These are some possibilities, too:

1. Story stays healthy into June and is playing excellent defense and hitting over .740. Dham & Romy or Grissom are holding down the 2B job, very well. Their defense is a net plus, and DHam is hitting .750 v RHPs and Romy .800 v LHPs. Maybe that keeps Mayer and Campbell from being added to the infiled, unless we are thinking 3B.

2. An OF of Duran & Ref in LF, Rafaela & Duran in CF and Abreu & Rafaela in RF is doing as well as they did in 2024, or better. The need for Anthony or Campbell in the OF is not present.

Now, we may decide that even if those positions are doing okay or better, a prospect addition could provide an even better result. I'm not against that idea, despite the old adage, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

How much we want to prolong the prospect additions to gain a year(s) or control may play into the chocies and timing of the choices, but we do have some decent hopes at 2B, SS and OF without counting on the kids.

I could easily see them delaying Campbell's arrival to gain the extra year of control and that's probably not a bad thing. Devers can start at 3B and Bregman moves to 2B until Campbell comes up and then Bregman opts out after the season.

IMHO we should not be counting on Bregman opting out.  If he was strictly interested in the biggest payday, he had 171.5 million reasons to sign with Detroit.  And he'll be another year older after 2025.

It’s just as easy to come up with 171.5 million reasons to NOT go to Detroit…
