But newcomb is not on the 40 man roster

No, but we have 3 pitchers we can add to the 60 Day IL to open a slot.

Newcomb gets one more chance to showcase in Mexico, I think Mexico has high altitude, so it could be challenging

He may have won a slot, even if he does not do well in Mexico. Cora has been gushing over him.

I wish all our pitchers the best of luck, but hometown kids will always be extra special

Monterrey, MX is not high altitude. That would be Mexico City

Mexico City is about 7400

Ah Monterrey.  I worked there for a while.  Basically a city in the desert surrounded by mountains…

To keep pitching?

I guess Larry is suggesting other teams might have interest with openings at the MLB level.

Those other teams also had 4-5 months to offer Moore and Ottavino minor league deals, and still didn’t.

Plus does either one have an opt out? If so, best to keep pitching until that date…

I concede your point.  Over to Larry now.

Tanner Houck having a really bad 2nd inning vs the Rays .  Momma said there'll be days like this.

He’s had a really bad spring overall.

Posted

We really can't afford to have Houck drop off, significantly, this year.

Crochet & Buehler could take up a lot of slack, but we need a strong third man, and Newcomb, Fitts or Priester are not likely candidates.

It’s not like he was trying out for anything…

After seeing Tanner give up 12 hits and 10 runs in 3.2 innings, the immediate thought goes to his arm/elbow concerned for problems there.   He was not right in any way.

That the Sox dont seem concerned does ease my mind

I think both Moore and ottovino have an opt out date of the 23rd.

MLBTR:

Moore and Ottavino are both Article XX(b) free agents, so their minor league deals contain built-in opt-out clauses for today, May 1, and June 1 unless their teams have selected those contracts to the 26-man roster.

29 H, 5 BB, 13 IP

Not getting any swing and miss this spring.

A lot of grounders off Houck had eyes yesterday. And since it's still ST, there's the possibility he was trying to hone a new pitch or grip... but if there are any health reasons for giving up 10 earned, may want to temper expectations for a 90-win Sox season.

If Houck had to join Bello and Crawford on the IL, that would mean Boston will be effectively missing its entire top 4 starting rotation (along with the departed Pivetta) from last year's .500 club.

For the Red Sox to make the playoffs, Crochet and Buehler don't both have to be 20-game winners... but at least 30-game starters.

Ok but he knows he’s in the rotation.  Is he working on any new pitches?

He also might just be out there trying not to join everyone else on the IL.

Until the Sox get concerned, I’m not going to be. Plenty of pitchers in his position have had awful springs followed by good seasons…

Regression was going to affect houck this year given the number of innings pitched last season! He probably starts out slow and then has a great second half.

I did not expect regression due to IP. He was old enough and seasoned enough to step up from 106 to 178 innings. He's almost 29 and has been in organized baseball for 10 years. If anything, he's behind pace on IP.

I was worries about regression, though, but not from overuse.
