Rumor has it Mets have put forth a 730m dollar offer to Soto.

Considering the difference in tax rates, for the Sox to match they would have to offer 715m.

Will Red Sox up their bid, or does the dream stop here? Or is this rumored Mets offer bogus with a lot of deferred money to make it sound better than it is?

If the Sox offer $730/15, do the Mets add $50M?

I don’t think it matters anymore, at this threshold Soto is going to go to the team he likes best.  I won’t be surprised if he ends up taking a lesser offer this point (from the 700+ ones)

any more money is probably just us bidding against ourselves.  The Ball is in Sotos court at this point. Let the cards fall where they may

I think at some point the Mets are bluffing. I very much doubt they will drop 780.

And perhaps that's why they say they will pay 50m more because they know that's what they have to put up to beat the Red Sox considering the difference in state taxes and his team preference.

If It gets close down to the wire, and we're in it, I'd go all the way up to 725/15 and see if the Mets blink. I don't believe they will go 775.

I have a weird feeling about this. If he wanted to stay with the Yankees all along, he would have signed by now. If he was going to take the highest offer no matter what, he would have signed with the Mets by now. My gut tells me he is coming to Boston.

Of course, 24 hours from now, I will probably look like an idiot. But, Heyman's tweet about Boston or Toronto not being out of it sounds like foreshadowing to me. Heyman might know, and is saying that to get out in front of people being surprised when he doesn't go to either NY team

$700/15 or 16 (ig MLB allows 16) is already too high. Just make the top offer and walk away.

i agree. spend the money on Burnes and Fried and go on. i really only want Soto IF we also get Burnes or Fried. adding him and no pitching would be a disaster.

Not if we get Soto to pitch too! For all that money, he better be ready to work 🤪

Fried + Burnes will be cheaper than just Soto. Even the AAV might end up close.

At some point, having Soto will make no sense if the Sox can’t surround him with talent.

Fourteen years and nearly three-quarters of a billion dollars is a lot for one player.  Rebuild the staff, and hope Anthony is the next MLB superstar…

could not agree more

As much as I was getting pumped up on the idea of Soto on the Sox, I'm thinking that we know JH will get cheap, again, at some point, so $700M+ would likely put a lot of pressure on our farm to fill many slots for min wage.

In 15 years from now the CBT will be well above 400 million and elite players will be pushing $100 million a year.  He’s probably opting out after a year anyways so who cares.

2025: $65

2026:  $65

2027: $60

2028: $60 opts out

2029-2039 $47.5/year

i think it’s finally getting leaked today. Boras wants Soto signed so the winter meetings can be about all his other clients

Go big! Front load the contract -60/70mil a year.

Give him an opt out after the 3rd/4th year.

Everyone a winner.

At this point Soto is either signing here or not, I don’t care what we or anyone else throws in.  I firmly believe above the $700 million mark any team is just bidding against themselves.  He’s going where he wants to play.

I will be dissatisfied, but I also recognize the emotions attached to this.  I want call it a failed offseason or rage against ownership until spring training has come around and they’ve failed to add pitching.  They really still need two elite arms.

Less total money, but the risk of 2 large deals for starting pitchers with a 3 at the start of their age is too much.

Boras has been an agent a long time and knows how to juggle multiple clients.  It’s not like he works alone.

Im not sure who his clients are this year beyond Soto, Burnes and Bregman…

+ Snell (signed), Teoscar, Bellinger.

Teoscar is not a Boras client.

Bellinger is not a free agent.  The Cubs do want to move him, but all Boras can do is enforce existing relevant clauses in Cody’s contract.

I don’t think this is Scott’s year after Soto.  He’s not trying to get this over to focus on his others.  Soto is his Mona Lisa…

I've pretty much moved on fro Soto. The only way he comes to BOS, id if he takes less, and maybe the taxes and cost of living factor in.

We aren't signing Fried and Burnes, and as much as I am leery of signing Bregman. I think we could salvage the winter by signing Fried, Bregman, Hoffman and Carson Kelly, then trade for another quality SP (Lopez, Crochet...) I'd like to keep Casas, but moving Devers to 1B/DH and Casas to DH/1B squeezes Yoshida to LF, the bench of a complete salary dump trade. (I doubt that can be pulled off, at least this winter.)

Yeah, I got some bad info there!  The Soto thing is melting my brain.

We need a dose of sanity here. I'm all for spending to put together a winning team, but this is getting ridiculous . Crazy money. Soto is getting way too much hype. He is very good, but Mookie is a better all around player. Soto is a good hitter, albeit a career .285 batting average. He walks a lot. Hooray. Let's pay him 3/4 billion bucks because he walks a lot. He has good, but not exceptional power. Never led the league in home runs. He is a mediocre defender. Not a big base stealer. While I would like to see him on the Sox, this hysteria is not warranted.

I totally agree and if we can believe the reports we may just have the next Soto in Roman Anthony.  PASS on Soto.

The numbers only sound big in the present. A few years from now this will be considered the normal price for a top tier free agent.

Remember when 30m sounded a lot for a franchise player? That's not current economics anymore.

the Dodgers have 7 players with 9 figure contracts. the Red Sox have 2. and the Dodgers are supposedly in on Soto. the Red Sox can afford to sign him and Burnes.

JH can "afford" to sign the top remaining 5 FAs, but what does that mean when several other owners can, too?
