Must be a boring day in the basement for moon!

Anthony plus power gap power great power all power plus defender = untouchable

Stay off Sox Prospects. Com they like to hype up the 24 year old beer leaguers as top 10 prospects

The best deal is the one u don’t make

Needs depending on injury, late inning relief where u trade a C level prospect

Chicago says Red Sox and Yankees looking at availability to Jamison tailson via trade. Signed through 2026, I think

Sounds like we're back in the business of Interest Kings!

Taillon has 2 years / $36 mill left on his deal after this year. If traded, and there are apparently multiple suitors, an acquiring team would be on the hook for about $6mill this year.

Probably worth noting the Cubs are also reportedly in on Toronto catcher Danny Jansen, who’s a free agent himself come November. If the Cubs are targeting Jansen, are they really selling?

He had some injury issues a while ago, but has starter 29. 32 and 30 the last 3 years (16, so far in '24.)

3.5 years

4.13 ERA (102 ERA+)

4.22 FIP

1.19 WHIP

Looks a lot like Pivetta's numbers, and a perfect fit for the Sox 4/5 starter addition philosophy. (I'm not dissing the idea: we need some decent innings eaten.)

Only 20 pitchers have more IP since 2021 (569). Pivetta is 27th (4.32 ERA/4.15 FIP)

121 pitchers have 300+ IP since 2021, and here is where Taillon (and some others we know) rank in...

xFIP-

22. Eflin 84

30. Nate 86

40. Flaherty 90

42. Kikuchi 91

49. Bello 93

52. ERod 93

55. Montas 94

59. Giolito 95

62. Bassitt 96

67. Heany 97

71. Berrios 97

76. Pivetta 98

79. Wacha 99

83. Taillom 102

85. Fedde 103

ERA-

T74 Berrios, Heaney, T Rogers 100

T77. Taillon 101 (M Keller, Dunning)

85. Pivetta 103

94. Giolito 106

99. Bello 107

The Cubs blew it up in 2021 when they had a good team that just needed a couple of starting pitchers. . Had a huge fire sale and started a rebuild. I don't think they would want to do that again so soon. That's not to say they wouldn't like to move Taillon.

Rut-row... wasn't Breslow part of that front office?

The Cubs were 51-55 at the deadline, 11.5 games back. No idea how far from a wild card, but presumably closer. However, Bryant, Rizzo, Baez and Kimbrel were all in their final years of their deals. Ditto Darvish, who was dealt in the previous December.

It appears to have been a pretty successful fire sale, with several of their acquisitions either making MLB or making the Cubs top ten prospects list by every evaluator. Some names include Pete Crow-Armstrong, Caleb Killian, Nick Madrigal, Alexander Canario, Kevin Alcantara, and Owen Caissie (for Darvish, in the previous December.

They did quite well in that firesale, and many fans are starting to realize it…

Cubs are 4.5 games out of the 3rd wild card. The haul for taillin could be substantial from the Sox or the Yankees. If the cubs needs bats, we are the dance partner. If the cubs need pitching, the Yankees or dodgers are the dance partner

Not proposing it, but what would this group say if Breslow blew up this team to set it up better for 2025/26 ? Sell off O'Neill, Jansen, Pivetta, Winckowski, etc. Yoshida's contract and limitations make him unsalable, Martin has downgraded himself, Story's injury history, Grissom's unavailabilty all are limiting factors in making significant moves .

Can you get another young starter, RP and RH hitter for any of these guys ?

I think we absolutely need to sell on o’niel, Hansen and pivetta!! We should be able to get three quality prospects and three decent prospects in return.

Maybe so. You would know the Cubs better than I would. ( They have always been my favorite N.L. team) But the fact is, it is three years later and they are in last place.

Is it Abreu who may be the frosting on the cake in a big deal to get SP/RP and/or a RH hitting 1Bman? Big potential, cost controlled, but seemingly prone to mistakes and limited pitch recognition. Undisciplined swings and throws from RF.

I agree. Abreu seems like a guy you could get something for, and he's not really a great long-term fit as a lefty hitting outfielder.

I'm not sure Abreu brings back a really good pitcher, but maybe good enough.

We could go with Refsnyder/O'Neill in RF and Rafaela in CF, or Ref in LF, Duran in CF and O'Neill in RF. (I guess we could call up Lugo or Yorke to play LF, when ref sits.

An Abreu plus a decent prospects (#7-20) might get us a good pitcher.

Maybe. BTV certainly gives him a good surplus value.

Of course they also give one to Criswell, so maybe they’re not perfect…

Seems like the kind of thing you would want to do in the offseason rather than right now, though, if you care about what happens this year. Abreu has been one of our better bats, after all.

It’s also worth noting Anthony is playing LF in AA today. This could also be to him looking more like a corner outfield and as he approaches closer to being MLB ready the organization wanting to expose him there. Rafaela/Duran may have CF/LF locked up.

Calling up Anthony to replace Abreu would be ballsy. We’ve seen to prospects hit the ground running at the MLB level and we’ve also seen them struggle for a while. Anthony could be three times better than Abreu long term but not an upgrade long term.

Abreu is also under team control for several years AFTER this season. He will still be a movable asset in the offseason. The team would be better off holding onto him.

The only real value Anthony might provide is he might not have sever platoon splits like Abreu does. But even then, that might be more of a long term outcome with him rather than a what you’re getting now from him.

Posted
With Anthony expected to join Duran and Rafaela in the outfield, Abreu certainly seems to be expendable.

Is Anthony going to be called up after the trade?

More likely, Lugo, Yorke or EValdez/Grissom with Rafaela back to CF FT.

I am thinking more of the future. If Abreu were traded now, there are other options for replacing him. Just as there were when he was injured.

I think the theory behind a move like this is that the drop off from trading Abreu, who looks like a platoon OF'er, to a Refsnyder vs LHPs and rafaela from SS to CF v RHPs is not that great. Maybe Lugo or Yorke could play LF until Anthony is ready. Maybe EValdez or Grissom can play well enough to move Rafaela to CF FT.

It does seem counterintuitive to trade one of our best hitters, but we are LHB heavy, and we need pitching more than a LHB.

Okay, yes, that makes more sense, but getting a pitcher, now, might make it work, especially if the pitcher is not a rental.

Boston gets:

RHSP Erik Fedde (21.7)

SS Paul DeJong (1.0)

1b Andrew Vaughn (0.3)

RHRP John Brebbia (0.0)

Total: 23.0

Chicago gets

RF Wilyer Abreu (24.7)

2b Nick Yorke (3.0)

RHP Ryan Zeferjahn (0.4)

Total: 28.1

Slight overpay for Boston.

Also, Boston would need to DFA 3 players. Dominic Smith? Brad Keller? Bobby Dalbec? Alex Speas?
