mvp 78 Community Moderator Posted July 21, 2024 Posted July 21, 2024 Is Anthony going to be called up after the trade? More likely, Lugo, Yorke or EValdez/Grissom with Rafaela back to CF FT. Anthony isn’t showing up until 2025.
notin Old-Timey Member Posted July 21, 2024 Posted July 21, 2024 Ewwwww. Pass. Don’t like Fedde? Or passing on Vaughn? I could see the latter…

Boston gets: RHSP Erik Fedde (21.7) LHRP Jared Shuster (1.2) SS Paul DeJong (1.0) Total: 24.9 RHH 2b Andy Ibanez (3.3) Total 3.3 Chicago gets: OF Wilyer Abreu (24.7) RHP Ryan Zeferjahn (0.4) Total: 25.1 Detroit gets 2b Nick Yorke (3.0)

I think Yorke could help ease the loss of the LHB Abreu in the OF by being a RHB in LF, but you gotta give to get.

To BOS: Fedde (1 yrs left at $7.5M) and Tanner Scott (Rental) To CWS: Abreu, Zeferjahn To MIA: Shuster, Yorke & 2 from Lugo/Paulino/Castro/Jordan
moonslav59 Old-Timey Member Posted July 21, 2024 Posted July 21, 2024 I realize deadline deals seem to be more overpays than winter deals, but Crochet and Skubal both have 2 arb years left. I'd like to see us make a play for them. It would probably take a big 3, or maybe Campbell plus Bleis or Cespedes to get the talks started. There has been a lot of talk about which of the 3 (or 4 with Campbell included,) is most expendable. I see it this way: Mayer fits into our highest non pitching need area (middle IF.) He is at the top of my avid a trade list. Teel is a legit catcher. Even though we have Wong, catchers are too few and far between to trade him over an OF'er (see Anthony/Campbell.) Anthony or Campbell are both very promising, and I don't feel like I am devaluing them or writing them off by saying one could be traded for a TOTR pitcher, and we could absorb the loss. We have Duran, Rafaela, Abreu and whoever we keep from these two to take Ref's place in or after 2025. We also have Lugo, Yorke or Valdez to maybe play LF, if we need one. Bleis and Cespedes are too far away to have high enough trade value to get a TOTR pitcher. Their upside is too high to trade, now. We could include Fitts, Sandlin, Perales, E R-C or Dobbins, in a package for a SP'er with 2 or more years of team control. If anyone insists on Lugo, Yorke, paulino, Castro or Jordan, none should hold up a good deal.

I'd say the Dodger series demonstrated pretty convincingly that by far the biggest weakness of this Sox team is the bullpen. So I'm less sure than you that 2 starters solve all problems. I've been harping on getting a good righty bat, but maybe what the Sox really need is a hitting/batting coach as good as their pitching coach. Someone who can teach our lefty batters how not to look like complete idiots when they face lefty pitchders. To me these OPS's vs lefty pitchers are inexcusable: Duran .678; Devers .644; Yoshida .518; Abreu .449. I just took a peak at Philly's 2 best lefty bats and these are their OPS's vs lefties: Schwarber .961; Harper .992. Edited July 22, 2024 by Maxbialystock

Carl Yastrzemski had a lifetime OPS of .693 against LHP. The Sox do need to add a RHH to the lineup at some point to stop the bleeding vs LHP. But a .678 is closer to average than problematic…

Also disagree with my tirade about signing relief pitchers. If Breslow gets starters, one or more current starters can go back to the bullpen. Besides, I know nothing about who's available out there.

moonslav59 Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2024 Posted July 22, 2024 Beating COL is a must. Turning around the momentum might help as we head into a very tough stretch our schedule after COL, but the team cannot look ahead. One game at a time! Just win, baby!

Bellhorn04 Community Moderator Posted July 23, 2024 Posted July 23, 2024 Even Houck and Crawford slipped, badly. We need a stopper, and quickly. Houck and Crawford were bound to wear down some due to the innings increase. Certainly something that was fairly easy to predict, and points again to negligence.

On one hand, the Red Sox have overachieved, so pushing some chips into the middle would reward a group that warrants such. On the other, they'll soon transition to a younger core, with Marcelo Mayer, Roman Anthony, Kyle Teel and Kristian Campbell all almost big league-ready… The Red Sox will be busy. They just might be the sort to nibble on the margins both ways.” Interesting considering Craig Breslow has said he wants to pick one path and stick to it.

Most bought into the full throttle comment, and it sounds like most have bought into the Brez jargon too. Actions speak louder than words, and that’s what I’m waiting to see on what Brez is going to do. All the Brez speak the last month, or so does not bring any great anticipation to me.

moonslav59 Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2024 Posted July 23, 2024 Houck and Crawford were bound to wear down some due to the innings increase. Certainly something that was fairly easy to predict, and points again to negligence. Certainly, neglecting the rotation, especially after we knew Gio was toast, was the big blunder. (The Sale trade, to me, is only a blunder in hindsight, but let's not go there, again.) We knew guys like Houck, Whitlock, Crawford and Bello could not be counted on for 175+ IP, and only Pivetta offered some hope for that total. Criswell and Anderson? LOL! It would have been way cheaper signing a 4/5 SP'ers than trying to trade for one, now, and it would have lessened the strain on the current rotation and pen by having someone eat 80-110 IP, up to now. Somewhat amazingly many SP signings, even ten or more low to mid range ones, have produced, so far this season. Upper-Mid Range: $25M x 3 Sonny Gray (2.7 fWAR, 15th in MLB and better than Crawford) Mid Level $13M x 4 Imanaga (2.5 fWAR (19th in MLB $15M x 3 Seth Lugo (3.2 fWAR is 9th) $18M x 2 Stroman (0.0 fWAR but 110 more IP than Gio) $16M x 2 Wacha (2.0 fWAR, 33rd in MLB- ahead of Crawford) $14M x 2 Manaea (1.3 fWAR, 67th and just below Pivetta) $14M x 1 Flaherty (2.3 fWAR, 23rd in MLB- ahead of Crawford) $13M x 1 Severino (1.2 fWAR $13M x 1 Gibson (1.2 fWAR) $11M x 1 L Lynn (0.9 fWAR- same as Criswell) Low/Mid Level: $8M x 2 Fedde (2.6 fWAR, 17th and tied with Burnes) $7M x 1 Paxton (0.3 and 89 IP) $4.5 x 1 Lorenzen (1.7 fWAR and 97 IP)
