It is a common tactic to put pressure on other parties who are also interested in consumating a deal with one of the parties. It is shows a total lack of sophistication in negotiation strategy not to recognize that fact.

But bottom line - they make plenty of mistakes and miss lots of stories. And some of them have clear angles.

 

And let's face it, many of them prefer to be negative because nothing keeps you reading them more than bad news. Nothing in any aspect of journalism (including sports) attracts more readers and viewers than bad news. Mazz, in particular, always reminds me of the Peter Jacobson character from 61*, first man to find/create negativity and controversy to pass it on and keep people tuned in...
