"Hey sport, I'm paying you a bunch of money for the next decade no matter what. Go out and destroy that knee in a meaningless game for me!"

Just DH him…

Jansen: 0 games

Pivetta: 0-3 games

Go from a 81 win to 78 win team.

Yes, but I mentioned getting Casas back plus more from Abreu and O'Neill plus Hendriks as maybe evening that loss to .500.

DH's seem to get injured too...

Much less often. Unless you’re counting hemorrhoids caused by all that bench time…

What’s the difference? Have we reached the point where a 78 win season is a complete failure but an 81 win season is some sort of moral victory?

When Hendriks first came back last season, he was awful. O'Neilll is never healthy. Not sure how much MORE you'd expect out of Abreu.

Say your prayers that Yoshida comes back HOT and that they can deal him at the deadline and only eat a small amount of money.

I was talking only about Pivetta, Martin and Janssen.

No way we can trade Yoshida.......who'd want him?

He's been on the IL and did not play much the first few weeks, so expecting more than the first 3 months is not illogical.

I do think just the Casas return might cancel out a sizable chunk of the Pivetta/Jansen loss. The rest are more speculative.

There is also a chance Pivetta and Jansen do not do well after the deadline, too.

Not when it's the smart move to keep him from getting injured in meaningless games, and dropping in the standings might mean a higher draft pick.

And we know JH is all about being smart and patient and not focusing too much on the present.

I get the tanking part of it -- though budget forbid we win the lotto and have to pay #1 overall slot money -- but does John Henry seem like the kind of boss who encourages his highest salaried employee to use all his paid sick days?

Maybe you didn't notice, but our DH has been on the IL a while...

To me JH seems like he wants to be the smartest guy in the room. Devers getting seriously injured after the team has cashed in for the year would be very un-smart.

Point?

What position has the smallest risk of injury?

Maybe, but you don’t tell a healthy baseball player to avoid risk and sit the rest of the year. These guys have short enough careers as it is.

If Devers was willing to sit for a month or two to avoid injury while the team tanked, I would hope the Sox ship him out this offseason. Why would any team want a baseball player who didn’t want to play baseball?

You're not praying hard enough, unbeliever.

His next goal is to win the WS while being under the CBT. He doesn't want the taint of expensive FA guys hanging around.

a) That DH's do get injured.

B) Last I checked, it was not playing at all.

DH is still the position with the least risk of injury. And one injury to Yoshida doesn’t change that at all.n “Not playing” is NOT a position. Please show me one baseball card ever where the player’s position was listed as “not playing”.

Not to mention, the notion of telling a healthy baseball player to shut down completely for a prolonged period because the team isn’t going to compete for a title is flat out wrong on multiple levels…

Look, I'm the one who started this particular foolish discussion, and I was talking about Devers having a sore knee in August after the team sells off.

Thank god. If you get called up, I will start betting heavily AGAINST whatever team you play for. No offense.

Of course D.H.s can get injured. Players get injured playing on offense as well as on defense. Don't know which happens more often, but obviously a guy who plays both is more likely to get hurt. Not something that is even debatable.

And nobody is actually debating that.

At least Dalbec can play some 3B....ugh. Cooper?

He was no Scott Cooper.

I stand by my longstanding view that Scott Cooper is the worst player in MLB history with multiple All Star appearances…

Dalbec can be demoted. Cooper could not. That’s probably a bigger factor than we realize…
