I do think Abreu was a legit target

Randy Red Sox Verified Member Posted June 14, 2024 Posted June 14, 2024 Sale already has a 2.4 fWAR this year. Grissom is at minus .9 That's a difference of 3.3. Grissom stinks--Jeter Downs act 2
Randy Red Sox Verified Member Posted June 14, 2024 Posted June 14, 2024 Nor is it this year, as it is only June. Sale could blow out his arm tomorrow and the Braves still won the trade. Once Mayer gets to Boston -likely next year Story will be healthy again to play 2B . Where does that leave Grissom unless the LAD want to help us out again.

Has been worse than pathetic, granted.

Mayer’s splits are rough. 335 against rhp and 180 against lhp and all six homers against rhp

Nick Verified Member Posted June 15, 2024 Posted June 15, 2024 (edited) What's troubling now is that Pivetta, Kutter and Bello are giving up the long ball. Edited June 15, 2024 by Nick
Nick Verified Member Posted June 15, 2024 Posted June 15, 2024 Couple of more bad outings Bello may need to sit and work it out.
Bellhorn04 Community Moderator Posted June 15, 2024 Posted June 15, 2024 One thing's for sure, it's been a nightmarish start for Grissom as a Red Sox. A recurring hammy injury, a .367 OPS and (perhaps the scariest number of all) 1 EBH in his 87 PA's, a remarkable fWAR of minus 0.9. While Sale is indeed a Cy Young candidate. Total Hapless Harry stuff for the Sox.
Bellhorn04 Community Moderator Posted June 15, 2024 Posted June 15, 2024 What's troubling now is that Pivetta, Kutter and Bello to give up the long ball. Maybe Andrew Bailey's methods only work short term with some guys.

I mean, if out-of-shape me lost 15 pounds, that’s a big deal. I can’t imagine an athlete with 15 pounds to lose. StatCast doesn’t hate Grissom. With the balls he’s hit, they give him an expected batting average of .238 and an expected slugging of .379. Neither number is stellar, but both are vastly superior to what he has put up (and his OPS would be a lesser degree of frustrating at .676.)

But StatCast or Savant or whatever also show that relatively speaking he doesn't hit the ball especially hard, I believe.

They do, but his samples are so small they also don’t attach percentile rankings. If you’ve ever watched a broadcast that includes StatCast, one weird thing you might notice is they attach exit velocity and launch angles to foul balls. While I think this is just how the software works, I don’t know if this data is ever included in the player’s profile…

And 1 EBH in 87 PA's is incredibly feeble. I think he's a bust. If he proves me wrong I'll have some crow and fries.

There are so many players like Grissom that do end up being total busts, but I am not even close to being convinced he is one of them. He missed ST'ing and battled the flu, but excuses only go so far. Notin's point about his OPS maybe being .676, instead of under .400 can be viewed as another excuse, but in the end, we are talking about just 87 PAs. Many current studs in MLB had longer stretches than this of s***** play. I don't think 87 PAs is a "long time." I'm cutting him more slack, based on the sample size, not anything I've seen with my own eyes. My eyes also see he had a .746 OPS in his first 236 PAs in MLB. That is the larger sample size, so maybe it should hold more weight than the 87 PA one. The fact that Sale is doing so well has created a spotlight that is more like a laser cutter splitting Grissom into a million tiny pieces. I still have pretty high hopes for Grissom, although they are no wherre near where they were, last winter.
Maxbialystock Old-Timey Member Posted June 15, 2024 Posted June 15, 2024 how did O'Neill look last night? Muscular, which helps if your goal is to go 0 for 5 with four K's.

I disagree about Grissom, but you could be right, and I entirely agree 87 AB's ain't much. Pedroia had more than that when he stunk early his first full season--the same year he was voted ROY. What rankles me is paying Sale's salary, $17M, while he leads the Braves, while also paying Giolito $38M for one season (next season). Little wonder John Henry hates shelling out big bucks. This year, with just one exception--Devers--his best pitchers and hitters are bargain basement types.
Old Red Old-Timey Member Posted June 15, 2024 Posted June 15, 2024 Muscular, which helps if your goal is to go 0 for 5 with four K's. MOOn talked him up big the night before, and usually when MOOn gets giddy about someone when they have a good game, or two things turn s*****. He did the same thing with Abreu a couple of weeks ago, and things got so s***** Abreu fell down the dugout steps, and has been out injured. It’s just an uncanny knack he has. A curse. Not a gift.

The fact that Sale is doing great does not change the fact of the lack of dependability we had with him for over 5 years. I don't think any other team was offering anything better than Grissom without us paying a big chunk of Sale's salary. The fact that Grissom has sucked in 87 PAs just doubles the early grades on the trade. BTW, I do not view Gio as a bargain basement signing like Kluber, Richards, Perez I & II, Wacha and Hill were. The fact that he got hurt before pitching an inning does not change the fact that JH did allow for about double the spending on any SP'er since the Sale extension. It just flopped out of the gate- much like the Sale trade. The final grade is not in on the Sale & Dugo trades, just like it is not on the Beni and Renfroe trades, just yet.
