Of course, my opinion could b e wrong. I think they did not want Lester at even what their final offer was.

I certainly could be wrong.

We'll never know. The Red Sox front office keeps secrets better than the Mafia.

There is no front office. Or back office. Everyone went remote during the pandemic and never returned.

The Red Sox are run by a spare bedroom.

They also know not to turn their backs on each other.

. This guy has to be the worst Sox GM in the organization's history.

Worse than Haywood Sullivan? A guy with your moniker surely must remember the immortal Haywood Sullivan.

"Nothing," replied one international scouting director. "Overpay for me ... too rich imo," from another scouting director. A third exec: "I have no idea." A fourth: "Nothing ... I wish they and him luck." A fifth: "We thought he was worth less than half of what they paid." A sixth added, "I have no words."

These are anonymous quotes from international baseball scouts in an ESPN article when asked what they thought about the Sox signing Yoshida for 90 million. Not very encouraging. Sox must think they are smarter than all of them.

Breaking news.

Scouts have different opinion on ball player.

The point is, the Sox are taking a huge gamble on a Japanese player with big money. He hasn't played at major league level. It may work out or it may be a disaster for Chaim. If it doesn't work out it will probably be the straw that broke the camel's back for him.

Red Sox are a bad punchline nationally today. Talking heads on a national "news" show -- which includes both Boston and New York fans -- concur on two points:

1. Sox are operating like a small market team

2. New England fans are very angry

The host implored, "What is the plan? Tell us the plan." Another said a lot is riding on the next moves, that better start with signing Devers. A third just said, "Chaim Bloom stole my Christmas."

This better be sarcasm.

He may be a jerk, but 4 rings screams "SCOREBOARD!"

Were there any good quotes? We'll probably never know.

People complained about drafting Romero and then getting Anthony due to having more cash. Lot's of bad quotes on that day, too. Now, not any.

I think these guys know talent and are just having trouble adjusting to the higher market values. Of course it was dumb, if we bid way more than the second GM, but these bidding wars for Japanese players are not like US FA signings. Remember the Dice-K overpay? The posting fee was over $50M!

The point is also the Padres are taking a huge gamble on a player that may not be a SS in 2 years, and paid him way more than Yoshida for double the years.

So, if Yoshida sucks and Bogey falls off a cliff, the back stays broken?

All of them in the quote is what I meant.

One quote said "I have no idea." Another, "nothing." It doesn't sound like "all of them."

A Devers extension would go a long way, but he just keeps 3B even. We have a bout $40M to spend and 2-3 major slots to fill.

Maybe all this fan anger is going to force a top prospect trade earlier than perhaps planned out.

I can't see us being relevant without a big trade or some real good luck with health and bounce back players like Sale, Paxton, Kike, Story, Taylor, Barnes and some juice from the kids. Too many "ifs" for my liking.

The Sox are going nowhere without an ace starter and zero run production from the now missing heart of the order. There are no bounce-back candidates who will suddenly find out how to hit .300 with 30 homers again. Devers is the only one, if he's not traded.

If Bloom for some out-of-character reason (ownership) suddenly signs Rodon and Correa, trades for Murphy or Reynolds and extends Devers, then Kike's club will be better... because, after all, they finally have a bullpen.

Maybe during the Devers negotiations, Bloom’s heart can grow three sizes that day?

It’s not much of a gamble. If Bogaerts can’t handle shortstop, everyone else on that team can…

Bloom is just the fall guy here. Henry is effectively trying to use him as a shield.

No, he's just the reincarnation of Ben Cherington.
